COMMITTEE MEETING.
The members of the Democratic County Central Committee are requested to meet at the Nowels House in Rensselaer, on Thursday, August 24, 1899, at 1:00 p. m. Business of importance is to be transacted and a full attendance is desired. N. S. Bates, Chairman. Thos. Walters, Sec.
Open the books. Now, taxpayers, let’s insist on having an investigation of county affairs. The Democrat is now “shy” I two libel suits. Only one “bluff” 1 now pending. Taxpayers, what do you think of the ring methods for silencing opposition in the newspaper field in Jasper county? Marshall’s vindication (?) is no doubt satisfactory to the campaign fund collectior, but hardly so to j the taxpayers of the county. Ex-President Harrison is anoth-1 er prominent republican who does I not endorse Majsr McKinley’s benevolent assimilation policy in the ! Philippines. In the forthcoming investigation of county affairs—for we must, have it —the amounts paid the va-1 rious newspapers of Rensselaer I should be gone into from top to bottom. It seems that the policy of the | administration in regard to the! Philipinos is now to be benevolent extermination under Secretary Root, and is to be prosecuted with more vigor than the former benevolent assimilation policy of the Major and Mr. Alger. The lowa democratic state con- j vention indorsed the Chicago plat-1 form in its entirety and strongly j condemned the war of conquest in* the Philippines, trusts and combines. Fred E. White was nominated for governor. The populists have endorsed the entire ticket. A prominent subscriber of The Democrat said to us a few days ago: “I am glad to see that you arc still after the gang. Every honest man in the county should stand by you in the fight. The poor people have paid tribute to this herd ever since I have known the county. Make it warm for the men who brazenly defy the law. Long live The Democrat!” The Sewer rat next door has again broke loose, after a silence of some weeks. Another vigorous kick from The Democrat will send the rodent whimpering to his hole once more. We don’t like to , stop periodically to bother about every mangy cur that barks at our I heels, but it seems necessary once in a while in order to keep peace in the family to turn around and kick some pestiferous whelp hard enough in slats to send him yelping under the barn. A valued democrat subscriber said to us, when renewing for another year, “Just keep’er coming as long as you advocate free silver, for I don’t want any goldbugism in mine.” That’s the sentiment, we honestly believe, of ninety-nine out of every hundred democrats in Pulaski county, and they will find the Democrat Journal right in line with the party on that doctrine and also in its loyal support of the platform and its candidate for 1900.—Winamac Dem-Journal.
