The deep solicitude of the “officfial organ” for the democrats of Jasper county in selecting an organ for them is indeed pathetic. iHowever, as the democrats of this I county are neither orphans nor have they been officially declared Blnsane, they feel amply able to ?judge for themselves in this mat- • ter. “Offered service stinks,” is an old and trite saying, as our friend of the Wheatfield ■ Telephone would remark. Why are all these cases for alleged tax-dodging brought against democrats? The evidence is conclusive that George E. Marshall, editor of the Republican official organ, is not altogether blameless, if we may believe, his assessment sheets, and yet we have heard of no case being filed against him. Don’t show so much partiality in these matters, gentlemen. Pass the good things around among members of your own party. Is it not strange (?) that the republican papers here are so anxious that the Barnacle should get the public printing required to be done in a democratic paper. The Barnacle “editor” has served the republican ring long and faithfully, but the democrats desire to have a thing or two to say about the medicine they must take in the future, and, as Mr. M. L. Spitler of the county council says, “they, the democrats, should be the sole judges in this matter.”
We are constantly assured that a great wave of prosperity is sweeping over the country. Yet everywhere workers are striking for an advance in wages. Is the “wave” benefiting the capitalists alone? If it does not touch the man with the dinner-pail it is not very beneficial to the country. The bone and sinew of the land must be touched by the life-giving current or it availeth not “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick,” and truly the “wave’’ is a long time coming.—Noblesville Ledger (rep). A well known republican township trustee who managed to get in a service account of S4BO in one year, three weeks of which year is said to have been spent at a widely advertised resort in a neighboring state, refen ing to the letter of notification sent out by The Democrat to the trustees said that if he (w. k. r. 1.1) did what he ought to do, he would begin action for blackmail against the editor of The Democrat. A gentleman, a prominent democrat, who heard the remark, offered the beMgerent official five dollars to do that very act, but up to date this ; high-priced township official has not seen fit to call around for the V. It is just such public officials as this man - that made necessary the new reform laws and it is not strange that men of his stripe are howling moet about having a
The mortgage exemption in Jasper county reaches $285,390. The total assessment of the entire county for 1898 was $7,130,330, and for 1899 it is $7,052,870, a loss of $77,470. The mortgage exemption in the state reaches over $25,000,000, and the net loss over 1898 isover $5,000,000. If there is one thing more than another in this world that deserves the respect and admiration of the people it is a man who is independent; a num who will not turn aside from the honest, straightforward way for the favor, the flattery or the money of men; who counsels with his own mind and obeys its command as the one voice before whose majesty he is to bend; who can honor those who differ from him without sacrifice of his manhood, and who dares hold and maintain his opinion before the world openly. There is a standing want advertised on the world’s every corner and every street, and everyone who can see the dishonesty which prevails, the insincerity which pervades society like a stain, the make-believe which covers human words and human actions like a foul disguise—has seen posted beside that dishonesty, that insincerity, and that make-believe, in unmistakable language the world’s great need: “Wanted—honest men.” Then when we meet men of this character let us take off our hats to them, remembering that an honest man is the noblest work of God.
The bucolic individual who takes the republican members of the county council to task for their action in signing the memorial to the various public officers of Jasper county, stands practically alone in his abuse of these gentlemen. They are all republicans who have had much experience in the conduct of public business, and have been considered quite partisan, to put it mildly, but they are men. and will, no doubt, use their best endeavors to fulfill the theory as well as the letter of the law and give it a fair trial. In regard to the memorial to which the the Republican takes such great umbrage, M. L. Spitler, whose republicanism is unquestioned and who is much better posted on law than many men who have their shingles dangling in the air, says: “If the democrats want such legal publications made in The Jasper County Democrat they should have it; the action of their Central Committee should be supreme.” This is the right kind of talk, and we heartily endorse it, both as regards democratic papers and these of republican persuasion, in settling such matters. The memorial in question was as follows, and was signed by every member except A. J. Bellows, who was absent: State of Indiana, > Jasper County: J PETITION. To the Auditor. Clerk. Treasurer.
