IN GENERAL
The Iron Molders’ Union of North America has decided to hold the next meeting at Toronto. Francis Murphy, the temperance lecturer, wants the President to send him to the Philippines as chaplain in one of the volunteer regiments. Since May 3 last, out of a total of 832 persons examined for appointments in the census bureau, 426 of the candidates have failed to pass the examination. Sawmill men of East and West Kootenai, Yale and Boundary Creek are forming a trust. '.Arrangements are now be* ing made to pool all the interests of the lumber and mill men in the interior of British Columbia. W. 11. Jennings of Texas has purchased from IL B. Spaulding, Clarence W. Turner and D. 11. Middleton of Muskogee, I. T.. 12,000 head of beef cattle, the price paid being $450,000. This is the largest cattle transaction made this year in the Indian Territory. The steamer Daniel entered the Halifax harbor towing the steamer Alnmere, which is disabled. The Alnmere hails from Newcastle, England. The Alnmere’s shaft snapped in a gale, and in the rolling seas the propeller was carried away. The steamer was driven about for eleven days, until the Daniel came in sight. R. G, Dun A Co. in their weekly review of trade say: "The general evidences of prosperity continue convincing. Failures are the smallest ever known for the season, railroad earnings the largest, and solvent payments through clearing houses in July have been 48.6 per cent larger than last year and 62.3 per cept larger than in 1892, the best of previous years. Official returns of the most wonderful year in the nation’s commerce show a decrease of $85,900,000 in value of the great staples exported, largely owing to prices, biit an increase of about $80,000,900 in other exports, mostly manufactures. Failures for the week have been 145 in the United States, against 207 Inst year, and 23 iu Canada, against 17 last year.”
