INDEPENDENCE. James Hurley faaa purchased a bicycle. Win Wray went to Parr to work Mbnday. John Leah of Parr, waa on N. R, laet Sunday. We learn that Blackford will not celebrate the 4th. Moat of our people will go to Fair Oak# to celebrate. Lenard Hay a went to the city of Renaaelaer Saturday. Miaa Sylvia Hill vlalted friends on N. R. hurt Sunday. i Charley Hopkina Suudayed with hia par rata at thia place. Lota of the oate are falling down, they are bo tall and heavy. Mlaa Bertha Miller waa the guest of Bertha Hopkina laat Sunday. The clicking of the bindera will toon be heard in the oat fields. Charley Jenkins began cutting rye for John Hurley Wednesday. William Daniels took a big load of wood to Francesville Saturday last. Mr. and Mrs. Hppkius were gueetsof Charfcy Jenkins aud family last Sunday. Abram Miller of Kankakee tp., talked to the people at the Gerraun Baptist church last Sunday. Several of the young people of this vicinity attended the Children's day exercises at Rose Bud last Sunday. The new house is nearly completed. Be ready boys, and get your bells in time for them when it is done.
NORTH BARKLEY. Miss Mue Callahan returned home Sunday. Mrs. McMurray visited Mrs, Ahlers Sunday. Comer is booming. Six fumilies living there now. George I.evereuu is visiting in R. E, K., 11l , this week. Harry Gifford and wife did shopping in Sehseeiaer Tuesday. We have at last got a store at Gifford, one being opened last week. Mr. Giept, of Pleasuut Ridge, railed oil Herman Ahlers Sunday. George Meckling made his usual call at Aaron Seitz’s Sunday night. F. M. Callahan and John Holliduy were in Rensselaer, visiting friends Saturday and Sunday. Tom Knight had some pretty lute callers u lew nights ugo. He didn't have any shoes to mend, either. Mr. Will liodell, who has been in this vi•inity for the past six mouths, returned to his home at Hnrrod, Ohio, Saturday. Greely Cook, Muhlon Laytou and Willie McMurray are prospecting in North Dakota, with a prospect of locutiug there permanently. , Joseph Myers of Hoopstou, 111., is at home now, helping with the farm while his father fa sick. Eight of the neighbors went over Friday and plowed his corn for him. Our Wheatfleld Cor. says, measles are as thick as fleas, there. They are as thlok as “grasshoppers" here. Misses Zelma Funk and Belle Seitz were in Sensseluer Saturday, tukiug in the sights and doing shopping for themselves and “others," meaning one of those bachelors at Comer. Miss Zelma desires to thank Mr. North Barkley correspondent for his anxiety? concerning her health aud requests him not to be worried in the leust as there ia no danger, at present, of her "heart” failing her. Besides, is it not of stone? But ■hould her heart trouble her in the future, would Mr. N. John Hurley and wife visited the latter's father, George Jenkins, Sunday. Prof. Len MoCurtain of Parr, attended Sunday school at Burnstown last Sunday. Lebern Stanley, who is working for Jesse Jenkins, visited relatives west of the tile mill last Sunday. There was a regular old “hoe-down," com* ■only called a dance, at Alex. Hurley's last Saturday night. Chris Morgeneg who is w orking for George Heßtfresb, attended Suuduy School at Burnstown last Sunday. Our soldier boy of the late war, John Hays has gone to Terre Haute to atteud school. Success to you, Johu. Our Southern mouutaiu sheep went to Sensselaer last Sunday. By all appearenceg he “lowed" to bring out a load as he had a three-horse team. John Hopkins, our N. R. agent for bicycles, perfume, electric jars and patent medicines, ean save you money. See him when you want any thing in his line. . Hands must be scarce around the Gifford district, as some of the onion farmers in that locality have been seen around Blackford hunting hands to pull weeds. A peddler was around lost Tuesday selling glam dishes. He had some tumblers that he ' could drive nails into boards without breaking the glam. People ought to buy such ware and then dispose of their hammers.

Won’t Miaa smile? <s The old bridge east of Sharon has been thrown away and a new one replaced. Our enterprising merchant made a flying trip through the oountry last Wednesday. Mr- and Mrs. Caster visited the bride and groom last Sunday, Mr. and Mrs, Cowglit. Mr. John Morrow from Thowville, 111., is visiting his brother, Mr. Cell Morrow, at present. Henry Beaver intends to give the young people of this neighborhood a social hop on the Fourth of July. What’s the matter with Dewey ? His paper came out week before last one aide blank. The reason why waa that Joe Ann hadn't sent in her items.

Farmers are cutting their rye at the present time. Hurrah for the modern Demosthenes—W. J. Bryan. R. A. Maunan is a Prof, after the order of Terre Haute. Everett Wyant is attending the Normal school at Knox. A family reunion was held at Mr. and Mrs. Sands lost Saturday, Mrs. Charles Peregrine, who has been sick, is better at this writing. Miss Blanche Hill and the D. V. cor. visited in San Pierre last Sunday. Lambert Collins was the guest of Miss May Keliermnn last Sunday evening. Mrs. Addie Lyons of Lima, Ohio, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sands. Miss Nannie Gross, who has been working, in Porter county, has come home. Chris Nelson has received u large supply of suit. Ye who are salt hungry, come and buy, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Lavender of Lowell, visited friends in this vicinity, the first of the week. I. S. Wude. the celebrated temperance lecturer, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Wilmington lust week. A number of the D. V. young people attended the Children’s Day exercises at San Pierre, last Sunday evening. Our oats are getting the big head. The only way to cure that malady, is to knock them dow n aud thrush them. Douglas Wyant is W'orking in Chicago at the present time. I wonder if he is working in a monkey-wrench factory. " If you want to bring down the wrath of the D. V. farmers upon your head, just ask them how their wheat crop is. Mr. Charlie Sands and Miss Netta Collins departed for Terre Haute last Sunday, to attend the summer term of Normal school. So Mr. Yalma is sick. I sincerely hope that he will get better. Although I'have never seen him yet I know he is an alright fellow. Messrs. Ketchraark aud Pfile are cutting their wild hay. Henry Flours, the professional hay presser, is pressing it out of the shock. Huckleberries are being picked very rapidly at the present time. Huckleberries mixed with cream and sugar is a D. V. dish at the present time, Mr. Finn went to Yalpo. last Saturday. He drove his team of sorrels of the Wilkes variety. This team will play an important part on the arena of the next county campaign. Miss Lillie Peregrine, addressed the weeds in her front yard in the following language, "Weeds. I have a notion to pluck you up and throw you iuto the highway.’’ She did, too. Trustee Kaupke took a flying trip to the oounty seat, last Saturday. He weut after a few pounds of McKinley prosperity, but was informed that England had purchased the whole out-put. The war for purification in oounty affairs is on. Shall we defend the issue or, like Arnold, betray the West Point of our interests to the opposition. The people say, defend the proposition. North Barkley cor. thinks that lamgetting Hail Columbia on an improved plan. Well, I am, but I expect to paddle the Intellectual ooata of the author of the Anti-D. Y. cor, items in the near future. The Glliam cor. asked me through the last week's issue to explain the verse in Revelation whioh says that there was a beast with ten head# and one of these heads was bruised. I will explain it from a political standpoint. Those ten heads mean the ten foremost leaders of the republican party namely: President McKinley, Hanna, Foraker, Alger, Harrison, Henderson, Gage, Roosevelt, Mason and ex-Csar Reed. The bruised head is represented by Reed who was hurt by being pushed off the stage of polities, by the McKinley administration. As Reed's bruised head malady is contagious, Reed had been quarantined. Harvey Miller was the guest of Miss Kate Keeney lost Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. John Romine Sundayed with Mr. aud Mrs. Miller. * Wilbur and Ado Sayler spent Sunday with Roe and Grace Yeoman. John and Kate Mauck spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. James Elijah. Jos. Bhlndelur aud Carry Christler of Parr, spent Sunday at John Lane's. Misses Kate Keeney and Grace Yeoman visited Rosa and Anna Lane last Tuesday. The surprise party for Mrs. Vestal was a complete failure. Was the grass too wet? Mr. and Mr*. Edward Stall took dinner with Mr. and Mrs. James Lane last Sunday. Mrs. Jos. Thomas and children spent Sunday with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Jos. Shindelar, of Parr.
Sheriff Reed and Geo. Strickfaden of Reusselaer, were hunting here and took diaaar with Frank Krasney, Julius Guldenaoff and Miss Jessie Zoboroaky of Morocco, were married in Illinois Isd week. They are enjoying their honeymoon at Chicago this week.

Purdy of Lake county, visited her daughter, Mrs. P. Stuppy, last week. We understand that coffee pots, four-year* Old clubs and raaors were fiyieg in the air about two miles from town last Tuesday night. ' I . M. M. Ooker, the 3-1 agent, was in Chicago the first of the week having aa operation performed on his nose, which has been troubling him for some time. We certainly think that “Velma” has a girl up in the country where the D. ▼. cor. resides, because he seeass to be “next to” all the movement of the D. ▼. cor. We heard a man say that he thought from the outof the gib of the D. V. cor. he took it to be a lady, but you could not stud any thing like that down our neck for a minute. The M. B. church at this place has beau equipped with a new bell. So when you hear the sound of it you may know that it means for all the good people to come, and others aa well. The “never-sweats” met in regular session last week and transacted such business as was necessary for the ensuing teres. Their place of ■meeting is in front of Feodig's drug store. In making preparations to celebrate the anniversary of our National Independence, it would be well for jis to turn our thoughts to the people of the distant Philiippiue Islands. They are imbued with the same spirit of liberty and independence that predominated over our revolutionary forefathers, and until we give to them that which we prise so highly—a free government and iudepeadestee —we make our celebrations a sham* and a mockery. We understand that Nubbin Ridge turned itself loose again in a more reckless manner than ever. But we were really surprised to know that the N. R. sports would drqpeofiar out of their class sts to have any thing to do with any outof way place like Hcusselaer, la the shape of a foot race.
