The Monoa Ditch. Construction Commissioner Fish of the Monon ditch has this week concluded the letting of the work and the making of the contracts, the different bidders having agreed among themselves so that it was possible for him to go ahead—for until they did so, and all assigned to some one man what they had bid off, he could do nothing in the way of contracting. Charley Sternberg and Wils & Sons, after “dickering” for several days, finally agreed that the former should have all the stone work and the latter firm all the dirt work, each taking his entire portion at the price at which it was bid off. Wils & Sons filed a bond for $20,000, signed by William Sabel, N. A. Murphy and Henry Weaver, for the faithful completion of the dredge work, which is to begin about Sept. 1 of this year and be finished by June 1 of next year. Mr. Sternberg yesterday completed his bond, also in the sum of $20,000, for the faithful completion of the stone work. It is signed by J. R. Conner, W. S. Huddleston, G. W. Thompson and CL U, Barker. The stone woFk is to begin right away, and to be completed by Oct. 1 of this year. There is about three-quarters of a mile of it in length, to be cut twenty feet wide on the bottom, and it has an average depth of about nine feet, there being nearly 15,000 cubic yards of rock to be removed. Most of it was bid off at ninety-eight * cents per yard, six stations going onehalf cent higher. The dirt work sold at an average of something under six cents. Mr. Fish is inspiring confidence as to the certain and satisfactory completion of the entire work by stipulating that the rock shall be done first, thus insuring the outlet, and by insisting upon gilt edge bonds, so that under always possible though not probable adverse circumstances the work could be finished even outside of the contractors. The Monon ditch will be a “sure RO”
this tuue, outlet and afll right up to the sperifiarioms.—Putoski <X Democrat.
