John Gilbert, in his cell in the county jail there, confessed to murdering his wife and four small children near Enterprise, Kan. Sheep owners who sent sheep to winter in the Big Horn Basin, Wyoming, are receiving reports of heavy losses by storms. Captain Isaac Walton, an old lake captain, well known in Chicago, Cleveland and along the lakes, died at Norwalk, 0., aged 83. At a meeting of the Western Soil Pipe Association, held in Milwaukee, it was resolved to advance the price of iron pipe 5 per cent. At Sandusky, Ohio, Martha May MeFillen, convicted of the murder of her lover, George Koechle, was sentenced to the penitentiary for life. The nomination of William R, Mcrriain Of Minnesota to be director of the census was confirmed in the executive session of the Senate without opposition. Five men and a woman are buried under an avalanche of snow which came down Granite Mountain, near the Magna Charta mine, at White Pine, Colo. At Tekamah, Nob., Calvin Hiscox was acquitted of the murder of Fred Sellers. The jury was out twepty-one hours. Hiscox’s sister was acquitted of the same charge a year ago. Three small children pf Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart of Walker's Valley, Wash., Were burned to death. The children had been locked up in the house while the parents were at work in the woods. Daniel Jones, alias J. M. Wallace, who swindled the Citizens’ Savings and Loan Association Bank of Cleveland out of $5,000 on a forged mortgage, was sentenced to ten years in the Ohio penitentiary. At Alliance, Ohio, fire destroyed the large buildings occupied by the Alliance Company, manufacturers of clothing. Loss SBO,OOO, Insurance $42,000. Two hundred operatives are thrown out of employment. Maj. Lee Patrick, agent for the Sac and Fox Indians and in charge of the Creek Indians, in Indian Territory, among whom smallpox is raging, reports fifty-seven deaths. There are fifty-nine cases in the penthouse. The scarlet fever epidemic has become so serious at Findlay, Ohio, that public schools have been closed indefinitely. Many adults are reported sick with the disease and some have been carried to other cities. J. J. Kunkle, who had been on trial to Lawrence, Kan., for over a week «a the charge of poisoning his wife, was acquitted. The evidence, which was not strong, was completed, and the lawyers on both aides waived arguments. At a meeting of the executive committee of the Ohio Coal Traffic Association in Columbus, it was decided to restore the cut of 10 cents recently made in coal rates on all the roads in the association. It was also decided to reissue the joint tariC. At Montaville, a suburb of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Laura Browning, aged 30, blew out her brains after taking a dose of laudanum and forcing ber three children, aged 10, 7 and 2, to drink the drug. The two older children will probably recover. It is said that poverty drove the mother insane. 1 The dead bodies of Mrs. John Gilbert and ber four children were found in their home la Clay County, Kansas, by a neighbor.
