REBELS TIRE OF WAR.
EIGHT THOUSAND FILIPINOS ARE WILLING TO QUIT. Native Deputation Visits American Lina Keen Agninaldo Eager for Ceaontian of Hostilities 7- Unconditional Surrender the Only Way Out. Two commissioners sent to Mulolos some time a;* by prominent natives at Uanila, who attempted after the first outbreak to arrange a conference between Gen. Otis and Agninaldo. retained under a flag 1 of trace. They report that chiefs commanding 8,000 rebels are anxious to Etirrender. They also say that Agninaldo is inclined to accept pacific overtures. Gen. Otis did not receive the commissioners. He holds that it is cot his duty to make pacific overtures, but to receive j them. lie will in no way recognize Aguij naldo as the hr ad of a lawful government, | nor as a beiligen-ur, nor as anything but a leader of aimed rioters. When the former conference was held* by Gen. Otis j with the native leaders, the latter had J nothing definite to projntse. They wanted j Gen. Otis to make proposals to Agninaldo. i Of course, Gen. Otis refused. He refused j to receive the late envoys for the same ! reason. The attempt to barn Manila and massacre its inhabitants has made the j American commander less inclined than ever to treat with Agninaldo. The forces of the insnrgents have been comparatively inactive for several days. The troops have become so used to this | idle night firing of the rebels that they give it no attention. The rebel sharpshooters continue their efforts to annoy the j American troops in the daytime. They j are allowed to waste their ammunition j with little attention, until they venture to appear in the open. Then a single voUey or a shell generally suffices to drive j them to cover. In Manila absolute quiet j prevails. The order to clear the streets at 7 o'clock has had an excellent effect upon the natives, and is enforced rigidly. TTte streets are deserted after 7 o'clock 1 by all save the patrols and European resi- ; dents with passes on business. Advices from the rebel lines say the | most fantastjg reports of tbe American 1 losses daring and since the fires are circulated by the rebel leaders. The Filipinos 1 a*e told that the Americans had 3W men 'willed and hundreds wounded during and since the fires. The foregoing official return shows that only six were killed and fifty-nine wonnded.
THE BECKER MURDER.
ChlcafO Police Are Searching Fewer* and Fra r rs. August A. Becker, the Chicago man held on suspicion of having murdered his wife, is facing two developments that weigh in the balance against him. One is the positive declaration that the hair found in the Becker barn was human hair, resembling that of Mrs. Becker, and that the blood found there was human blood. The other development conies in a sensational interview with Henry Sander, who says he knew Becker in Germany, fifteen years ago, and that a few days before Becker left for America the body of a wealthy stock dealer was found in a barn in the rear of Becker's house. The stock dealer bad been murdered and evidently robbed. Police have been searching sewers and prairies for the body of Mrs. Becker.
SHELLED BY MONITOR.
Malabo as Native Church restroyed by the HoaalaoCic. The rebels at Malabon fired upon the cruiser Callao from the jungle Monday while Admiral Dewey was visiting the Moaadnock. Three shells were dropped by the monitor into the Malabon Church, demolishing the structure and killing a number of rebels who were inside. A factory at Malolos is reported to be running day and night to supply ammunition for the insurgents. The ignorance of the natives is shown by the faet.that they have collected empty Springfield shells and are refilling them. Over two thousand of these cartridges have been discovered in houses in Pandacan by an officer of the Washington volunteers.
NATIVES ARE IGNORANT.
Population of the Philippines Placed at Oalx 4,000,000. Prof. Knapp, special commissioner of the Department of Agriculture to the Philippines, has returned with a poor opinion of the Filipinos. He says Agninaldo is a much overestimated leader, and would sell oat his cause for a satisfactory price. The natives, he says, are ignorant, but are adepts in treachery and deception. Prof. Knapp contradicts the estimate of 10,000,000 population in the islands, basing his opinion on statements of the dominican fathers, who place the population at 4.000,000.

AN EXCELLENT COMBINATION
SUCCESSFUL ENTERPRISE BASED ON MERIT. The Importance of Informing the Public of the Value of an Article Through the Leading Newspapers. The few remedies which have .attained to worldwide fame, as truly beneficial in effect and giving satisfaction to millions of people everywhere, are the products of the knowledge of the most eminent physicians, and presented in the form most acceptable to the human system by the skill of the world’s great chemist; and one of the most successful examples is the Syrup of Figs manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co. Unlike a host of imitations and cheiip substitutes, Syrup of Figs is permanently beneficial in its effects, and therefore lives and promotes good health, while inferior preparations are being cast aside and forgetten. In olden times if a remedy gave temporary relief to individuals here and there, it was thought {food; but nowadays a laxative remedy must give satisfaction to all.'lf you haTe never used Syrup of Figs, give it a trial, and you will be pleased with it, and will recommend it to your friends or to any who suffer from constipation, or from over-feeding, or from colds, headaches, biliousness, or other ills resulting from an inactive condition of the kidneys, liver and bowels. In the process of manufacturing the pleasant family laxative made by the California Fig Syrup Co., and named Syrup of Figs, figs are used, as they are pleasant to the taste; but tbe medicinal properties of the remedy are obtained from an excellent combination of plants known to be medicinally laxative and to act most beneficially. As the true and original remedy, named Syrup of Figs, is manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co. only, a knowledge of that fact will assist in avoiding the worthless imitations manufactured by other parties. The company has selected for years past the leading publications of the United States through which to inform the public of the merits of its remedy, and among them this paper it included, as will be seen by reference to our advertising columns.
Plenty of Sand.
The great divine was delivering the funeral oration of the two brave explorers who had died while penetrating the trackless desert “We most remember,” he concluded, “that these two courageous men were utterly isolated from the re«t of mankind at the time of their death. Imagine them in the heart of Sahara, their food and water supply exhausted, they themselves near to death, but, never once, If I may be permitted to use the expression, did their sand give out!”

The Age of an Oyster.
He who wishes may find out the exact age of od oyster, though he has not the telltale evidence in teeth. Tbe lines la the groove of the hinge of the shell tell the whole story, each line representing a year. An oyster Is of! age at four years; that is, he Is old enough to vote, take care of a family, and go to market. Going to market is a disastrous undertaking, for a 4-year-old oyster is particularly palatable. By tills It must not be supposed that after an oyster has passed the four-layer period and has five, six, or even ten wrinkles on his shell he is a back number. Indeed, there are records of oysters being eaten Just after celebrating their thirtieth birthday, and in most cases they formed a delicious meal. Thirty Is an unusual age for an oyster to attain, because few are giveu an opportunity to live so long. If left to enjoy life In his owu way, it is quite probable that the oyster would become an octogenarian or even centenarian. Captain Cocliratle on his last trip to Fulton market brought in an oyster found on his beds that is believed to be at leas) 35 years old.—Fishing Gazette.

Of John Milton’s ten London residences it is said not one is now left, though two or three have been standing within memory. It makes me feel like a new man. Yours sincerely, H. B. Man tell. Catarrh and Nervousness. A nervous person nearly always has catarrb. Catarrb Is one of tbe ways In which a depressed condition of the nervous system shows Itself. Catarrhal people are soon made nervous. The relation between chronic catarrh and nervous debility Is most Intimate. Catarrh Is chronic congestion of some mucous membrane. The nerves, which should guard the mucous membrane against congestion, are depressed and their function partly destroyed. The nerves that should control the circulation In tbe mucous membrane are called the vasa-motor system of nerves. Depression of the general nervous system soon leads to depression of the vasa-motor system. Depression of the vasamotor system of nerves at once causes chronic catarrh. ». Auy remedy to effect a radical onre of chronic catarrh must operate directly
