NOVEL ELECTIONEERING.
Two Rival Candidates That live Together and Are the Best of Fri—ds The little town of Auxerre in Burgundy is enjoying a strange electioneering experience. The rival candidates, a radical and a republican, have determined to prove that an election can be fought in a spirit of true friendship. They have accordingly come before the electorate on the same platform and harangued the astonished people in turns. They even make the round of their constituency in the same carriage, and air their respective views at the same time from either side of the vehicle. After a long day’s campaigning they return to the hotel where they are living together, and dine at the same table. Their supporters, strange to say, are furious at what they call the treachery of their respective candidates to their parties, and now that the first astonishment has cooled down, the electors of Auxerre are inclined to give these amicable rivals a warm time of it. They naturally conclude when the two are seen walking arm and arm to the same meeting that there is something more than a secret compact between these candidates. Rival politicians may dine together in the commons or the senate, but they must take care occasionally to denounce one another in their constituencies, or the electorate will take them names, or even ad wore extreme measures of dis •a!Westminster Gazette.
