M. Spoon, in his Recherches Curleases d’Antique, Axes the date of spectacles between the years 1280 and 1311, and says that Alexandre de Spina, having seen a pair made by some other person, discovered the secret, and made It public. Italian antiquarians say that the person was Salvino, who died in 1318, and quotes from an ancient manuscript his epitaph, which says: “Here lies Salvino Arnota de Arm ltd, of Florence, the Inventor of spectacles. May God pardon his sins.’’
