James D. Phelan, Democrat, has been re-elected Mayor of San Francisco after a contest of extraordinary keenness. DeWitt C. Cregier, ex-Mayor of Chicago, died at his home in that city. For two years he had suffered from Bright's disease. Mrs. Leslie Carter, the actress, has filed a petition in bankruptcy. The liabilities are placed at $63,773, while the assets consist of her wearing apparel, valued'at about S2OO. Benjamin Smith, 90 years old, and his wife, 85 years old, reached Chillicothe, Ohio, after tramping nearly all the way from White Hall, 111., where they at one time lived. Their age makes the trip a remarkable one. One life was lost and five persons seriously injured by a gas explosion in Schookey mine, near West Pittson. The explosion was caused by the ignition of an unknown body of gas. A Mazarin Bible was sold at the auction rooms of Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge in London for £2,950 ($14,632).
