The congregation of the Gospel Tabernacle in New York raised 5112,000 for missionary work Sunday. Five men were killed and eleven injured by an explosion of gas in colliery No. 8 at Coaldale, near Tamaqua, Pa. It is not yet decided who is to succeed the late Dr. John Hall as pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York. At Plainfield, N. J., a building occupied, by the Barge Cycle Company and a number of families was burned, the losses aggregating 560,000. The International Typographical Union, in session nt Syracuse, voted down a proposition to create a sick benefit fund under international control. Mrs. Augusta Nack, in Auburn, N. Y., prison for the murder of William Guldensuppe, suffers from cataracts of the eyes and is likely to become totally blind. J. McD. Scott & Co., wholesale shoe dealers of Pittsburg, have made a voluntary assignment for the benefit of creditors. The liabilities are stated to be 5200,000. Senator Platt, in speaking of the closing of the Tioga National Bank, of which he is president; said that the shortage is about $50,000, and that the depositors will be paid in full. Letters are, being forwarded to Gov. Black of New York by prominent men asking him to restore John Y. McKane to the citizenship of which his conviction and imprisonment deprived him. A New York syndicate has completed negotiations for all the properties of the Victor Coal and Coke Company in southern Colorado, consisting of several miles of mines and coke ovens. The price runs up into the millions. The People’s Telephone corporation of New York, incorporated at Albany with a capital of $5,000,000, proposes to begin a fight against the present telephone monopoly. Rates will be reduced to subscribers from $240 per annum, the present charge, to SIOO. Howard Gould and Actress Katherine Clemmons were secretly married at New York. The groom may lose $5,000,000, as under the provisions of his father's will his share of the estate will be ent in half 'unless a majority of the executors consent to the marriage. The Tioga National Bank of Owego, N. Y’., was closed by order of the Comptroller of the Currency, and this action reveals that the bank was wrecked by its assistant cashier, who died Wednesday. Senator Thomas ('. Platt is the president of the bunk and the largest stockholder. Mrs. Samuel P. Swartwood of Mountain Top, Pa., is the mother of twentyfour children. Five of the children are dead. But Mrs. Swartwood’s dinner horn can still summon to the table nineteen children, her husband, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law und two grandchildren. Mrs. Swartwood is now 40 years old. She was married when she was 14 years old and when her husband was 20.
