Chicago will hold a peace jubilee next week. This doesn’t interefeie, however, with the continuation of hostilities in the Illinois coal regions where the miners are fighting tor living wages, nor the Indian warfare in Minnesota. John Reynolds received a letter Thursday from his son Earle, the champion abater, who is now in New York City. He expects to visit here within the next few weeks, after which he will go to England to give exhibitions. Porter & Wishard have disposed of their grocery business to LaRue Bros. The stock will be moved into the Laßue store, we understand, and that Mr. Wishard will re-enter the employ of A. Leopold as clerk, while Mr. Porter will enter Makeever’s bank. No preventing Providence, a series of special meetings will begin at the old Watson school house, southeast of the city, next Monday night. Rev. H. M. Middleton, assisted by the young men of his church here, will conduct the meetings. .The people of that community are all invited to prepare for the meetings and attend them.
Arthur Lakin failed to arrive on the 1:45 train last Saturday, and did not get in until the evening train, therefore the demonstration planned for by Halstead’s rough riders waa premature. A reception was held for him and the other soldier boys at home on furloughs Saturday evening by the W. R. C. at which a pleasant time was had. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Crocket visited relatives and friends in Benton and Fountain counties last week. Mr. Crockett reports crops looking fine in that vicinity, and says many people will begin corn husking next week, owing to the prevalence of dry rot in the corn and the fact that they have lots of it to shuck out. Wheat, pastures, etc. are looking fine.
