The Democrat recently stated that the cutting out of pages was an unheard of way of correcting errors of record. The republican press circle here says it is a very common occurrence. Now we do not like to take their unsupported word for it, but if they will secure affidavits from three of the ninety-two present county auditors of Indiana that this is their usual method of correcting errors, or that they ever corrected an of an important record in that way, we will knock under and admit that we were wrong in saying it was an unheard of thing. Now, gentlemen if your statements are true and “there is nothing wrong in it,* 7 it is certainly a very easy matter to find three men out of ninety-two who would make affidavit to that effect. Come, now, either back up your wild statements or recede and dry up. Subscribe for The Democrat.
Pulaski County, Ind., Court House, erected in 1896. This is said to be the finest and most complete court house for its cost in the state. The total cost including furniture, fixtures, yard grading, coping, walks and everything complete, was $62,000. Pulaski is our adjoining county on the east and a large majority of our readers are very familiar with the county and many have seen this court house. The county has an area of 430 square miles and its population in 1890 was 11,233, while Jasper’s was 11,185.

It is to the financial interest of | every taxpayer of Jasper county to have a change in county govern- | ment. j Do yon believe there should be ; over §IOO,OOO difference in the cost t ,of Pulaski county’s court house and our own? I ■■ ■:: ■-■ 1 - • : It is very nice, no doubt, for Mr. Halleck, but how do the taxpayers like the idea of having to pay for his campaign thunder? \ . _ Is there a man in Jasper county f who believes for a moment that I any true statement of the cost of grading and fixing up the court house yard would ever have been made by the republican papers here? We showed two weeks ago that §§,958.50 was the amount paid the contractors, §656.50 of which was extras. Its total cost including everything, has been about §IO,OOO.
The man who is obliged to sell his labor to another or starve, without an opportunity to work for himself, can hardly be called free. Freedom means some kind of choice. The man or the company of men that owns the public franchise will assert and enforce that ownership with gunpowder and rifles. The only safe way to maintain liberty is to prevent encroachments upon it.
Bro. Clark’s style of petty personal journalism may please his class of readers and no doubt does, but it is a back number in the more advanced field of newspaperdom. However, we are perfectly willing for him to publish any and all communications that he may receive from our former home, or that his readers enquire as to our reputation there. Should he ever find that we were compelled to sign a statement that we were a liar and let off at that on condition that we leave the town and county, why, give it a place in the Journal columns. There is nothing in our past life that we care to conceal

BEWARE OF THE MAN WHO IS ALWAYS TRYING TO DEFEND THE SCOUNDRELS WHO ARE FATTENING ON PUBLIC PLUNDER. A CLOSE INSPECTION WILL GENERALLY REVEAL THE FACT THAT THEY ARE SHARING IN THE BOOTY .-Hebron News. The Winamac Journal, in referring to the cutting out of pages of the record of our county commissioners, says it is # “a most unheard of thing.”
Our offer to furnish at §IOO each one or one hundred comer stones of exactly the same quality of stone and same dimensions and design as that for which the county paid S5lO, is still open. We will furnish same in best dark Quinsy granite for §2OO each.
Berrien county, Mich., with exactly the same area of territory as Jasper, four times the population and ten times the amount of taxable property, erects a $72,000 court house, and all her court house bonds are to be paid off in seven years. Jasper county erects a §165,000 court house and some of her bonds run 35 years. If none of them are refunded, but all are paid when due, our court house will cost the taxpayers (bonded indebtedness alone and not including the §IO,OOO to $15,000 additional that was paid) the neat little sum of §323,000.00, What do you think about it ? Attorney A. F. Knotts, of Roby race track notoriety, at present republican candidate for joint representative of Lake and Jasper countibs, is billed to stump this county all of next week.- If there are any people in Jasper county who are unacquainted with Mr. Knotts by reputation, we would refer them to the files of any of the various newspapers of Indiana, both republican, democratic and independent of the time of the state legislative session when the antiRoby race track bill (we believe this was the name of it) was stolen and finally, as alleged, dropped by the thief into a privy vault, when the officers got after the thief too closely for comfort
The Massachusetts democratic state convention was held Wednesday. It endorsed the principles of the Chicago platform and endorsed W. J. Bryan and George Fred Williams for standard bearers in 1900. - ■ ■■■-. .1 Congressman Crumpacker, it is said, has established three newspapers in the northern part of his district in a vain attempt to popularize his official record in congress. One of the papers is located at Hebron, one at Valparaiso, while the third one is the Lowell Record, which was burned out this week.
The old court house used to be large enough to hold county teachers’ institute in, but owing to there being no room large enough in the new one (court room seats but 120) it was found necessary to hire the Presbyterian church for the last institute, and it cost the taxpayers $10.20 for use of stame. Humiliating, isn’t it, with a $165,000.00 court house?
In speaking of the court house ring wre do not mean the county officers alone nor all of said officials, but those w t lio have sought for years and still seek to run the county government in their own personal interests, to the financial disadvantage of the taxpayers. That such a ring does exist there is not the least use of trying to deny, and it will continue to wax fat off the people’s money until effectually knocked out at the polls.
Hon. W. L. Taylor, candidate for attorney general of Indiana, opened the campaign for the republicans at Ellis opera house Wednesday evening. A medium sized crowd turned out to hear him. His remarks were principally devoted to proving the silver issue dead, defending the war management, severe arraignment of the “yellow journals,” and closing with the stereptyped appeal of the republican campaign shouters to “stand by the splendid administration of William McKinley.”
Two weeks have gone by and not a “cheep” from the republican court house ring defenders in reply to the charge that Commissioner Halleck was using the court house yard and coping matter as thunder in his campaign for reelection, and that the county had paid for every dollar's expense the contractors were put to in tearing up the coping and walks, although we challenged denial if our charges were not true in every way. Their silence on the subject is sufficient evidence to the most confirtned ring admirer that our charges were true in, every particular.
The Journal says those two court house cuts which were mu in The Democrat previous to this issue “are identically the same building but are made by different processes.” Say the same style of building, Bro. Clark. They cannot have been the same building, for one is located at Eureka, 111., and the other at St. Joseph, Mich. For Bro. Clark’s edification we will add that the building, a cut of which is run this week, is located at Winamac, and next week we will have one from still another place. We may later on publish a cut of Indiana’s state house. It cost only about six times as much as Jasper county’s court house will cost when finally paid for, was built when labor and material was much dearer than at present, and represents several million people and ninety-two counties. It would be a very good comparison indeed, Bro. Clark. Thank you for the suggestion.
