Of the ninety-two counties in "Indiana but four have as high a county tax ns Jasper. Jasper county’s bonded debt for building the new court house is $9.22 per inhabitant, which is the heaviest per capita debt of any county in the state. The inovation of a newspaper conducted in the interests of the people of the whole county is raising a great howl from the political pap-sucking organs of Rensselaer. Jasper county is paying three Jiundred dollars too much for water for the court house. Based on tire price paid by private consumers, fifty dollars is a good big price to pay for what water is used by the county. The total cost of administration, i. e. county officers, in Jasper county according to the last official statement issued, was 80 cents per inhabitant, which is exceeded by only two counties in the state, Owen and Adams.
Too bad, but the Journal don't like the way- we are conducting The Democrat. Well, to tell the trutn, we didn't expect the Journal would be any too well pleased at our disclosures of extravagance and rottenness in the management of county affairs. The three republican papers of Rensselaer are tumbling all over each other in their efforts to "‘explain.” As several honest and straightforward republicans have said to us during the past week, no explanation is necessary. The adjoiasion is enough. The people an no* all fools.
