State Items of Interest.
At Shelbyville, John Palmerton dropped dead iii his hotel office. Paralysis of the heart was the cause. Lighfning struck the house of David Baker, near Waterloo, passing down through the chimney and striking Mrs. Baker, killing her almost instantly. McFarren’s large grain elevator at Lewis Creek was burned, with 1,5(X) bushels of wheat and 500 of corn. Loss, $5,000. The fire was of incendiary origin. At Valparaiso, Henry A. Stoner was swindled out of $4,000 by two meu who claimed they wanted to buy a farm. The three-eard-raonte game was used. Stoner recovered $2,200. Lee Evans, a performer with Pawnee Bill’s Wild West show, which played at Anderson, was killed while the train was nearing the city. He was sleeping on a flat car and, being a somnambulist, walked off the train. By the explosion of a boiler .at the power house of the Citizens’ Electric Light Company in Kokomo, the plant was badly wrecked, leaving the town in darkness. George Dunning, the engineer, was instantly killed. “Commodore” Hufford, a prominent farmer of Hendricks County, was drowned in Eel river. Hufford and family were camping at Eel river and while attempting to swim across the river he was taken with cramps in midstream and sank before aid could reach him. Deputy Fish Commissioner Frank A. Hackleman was arrested at Connersville, charged with shooting with intent to kill Miss Ora Hayward, daughter of Councilman Hayward. Hackleman fired thtee shots at Mrs. Hayward, having mistaken her for her daughter. At a preliminary hearing his bond was fixed at S9OO, In default of which he went to jail.
