IN GENERAL.
A party of French scientists, hea.ded by Dr. Terwagne, has left Vancouver, B. C., for Skaguay with a balloon, in which they will attempt to reach Dawson City, and incidentally look out for Andree. It is said by Bradstreet’s that “while ns yet showing little actual effect upon distributive trade, there Is evidence that the improved prospects for peace, With probable wider markets for American products, have given a more hopeful tinge to the trade outlook, more particularly at the East. This is reflected iu active preparations by shippers und coasting trade interests to share in the expected widening of demand from the West Indies. As for some time past, however, reports of solid business returns come mainly from the western part of the country, and in the markets of that section are reported signs of the grand swell of fall demand.” The Moses fumily of Indians from Heron bay, who are accused of a number of atrocions murders, hnve made a full confession of their crimes at Port Arthur, Out. Six years ago they murdered two men named David, father and son, and then, this crime being discovered by three Frenchmen, they killed them as well, taking their bodies out into Lake Superior in a boat and scuttling it, tyiDg stones to the' bodies. They have just been up for their first trial for the crimes, the story qf which was told hi evidence in detail by the sister of the murderers. The confession says that the story told by the sister is true and that the murderers expect to die fdr their crimes.
