MARKET REPORTS.
CHICAGO, CXt. 1. Wheat attempted to advance today, aided by lighter receipts and better cables, but was hit hard by the bljr Increase In the visible upply and closed unc-hangd for 1K--eember. May corn closed c higher. May oat3 was unchanged and provisions at slight deeiin. Wheat got a good start fnm the favorable nature of the early news affecting It. The tort-Ign markets were all juuted somewhat higher. The receipts here and la the northwest were comparatively sinall and there was a suU-tanilal decrease in the amount on ocean p.i.sagv. Another niatt-rial udvancx La Hie visible somewhat cooled the budding etithuslam of the bulls as tile lifcures were being received. I'rlmary m.irket receipts. Including tdiose at Kansas City, were only M3,uui bushels, and extort clearances from Atlantic ports slme the preceding report cleared the equivalent of bushels. A despatch from San Francisco reported 20,i.oo tons of the syndicate stock of wheat there as having been posted as weevilly, that was generally regarded as a bullish point. Stocks in. Liverpool are 250,o bushels emaJK-r tlian they were on Sept. 1. The visible supply Increased 1.224,OuO bushels laU week and now amounts to 71.41S.OOO bushels, again C0,ü:U0ü bushels a year ago. Chicago stoclta in regular elevators are 227, Ooo InWiels less than they were on th previous Monday. Decern ler started Ptrontf at &4e, against r3Tc at the close on Saturday, and continued firm until the increase in the visible began to force itst-lf upon the notice of the crowd. Pa rd ridge and Looming ton were free ae-llers at above 54c, sup;s'd to be for Rosecrans and Baldwin-Farnum were liberal sellers also for New York principals. It was guessed. Tiie advance culminated at 54lic and afterward the price receded to GUC. Closing cables wer lirm, with the exception that one very reliable private Liverpool message said: "Holders unable to sustain the advance." December at the close was at 537bC. Corn was tinn at uie owning and contlnuetl strong during the greater part of the session, although the full amount of the early gain was not retained to the close. Receipts were smaller than had been estimated on Saturday and the estimates for tomorrow were even lighter than today's receipts. That apparent confirmation of what had previously been heard of as diminishing receipts at interior points was the main cause of the stronger tone which prevailed. The visible supply Increased 113.000 bushels, compared with an increase of 441,000 In 1h? corresponding1 week of last year. Cldcago F-tiK-ks are 2,242,0o0 bushels, or 2S9.000 bushels more than a week apo, and the total in tiie visible is 4.30:.,0O0 bushels, compared with 8,071,000 last year. Cash offerings were very litrht and the demand for round lots of No. 2 in store, gv x k! . May opened at from T.O'ic to ."O'c, advanced gradually to 51ic and then declined to f.0-e, closing at Wr ."0-c. The oats marke was a fairly active one throughout the entire session. Shippers were taking the greater part of th-,-stuff, most of which w?s being handed out by local parties. Cariingto::-Hannah dlsipowed of a good deal. May was taken today and cash bcin? disposed of. Values were firm on May early and eased off later. At the start It rod from 33Tc to 34c, touched 34Uo and sold down to 33ic. Sympathy with corn and free offerings were princlpolly Influential In causing the decline. May closed at 33Tc. The provision market was quiet and rather firm until about twenty minutes froi the c'ose, when prle s broke on fre felling and lert the market lower. The receipts of hogs were 24,0i0, and only l.".003 are estimated for tomorrow. Pork f.r January sold at 5c above Saturday's closing prices, but later broke 12'c and at the close a fc decline was established for the day. Lard and ribs iursiHil n similar course -with a loss of 5c each as the result. Freights steady at lhc for wheat. Berry's Chicago advices report: Wheat displayed considerable strength at the start, but wound up in the usual depressed condition. Tha opening was at a shade over Saturday's close and prices sr.o;i scored an advance of Vie to ;.4c on the bet'er feeling abroad, decrease of 1.432,000 bushels In the passage statement, and light local receipts. The market lacked support at the advance, however, and the professionals were instrumental in causing thi break of r:8c, which quickly followed. Market remained depressed. The increase of 1.200,000 In visible and the increase of 1,400,000 in English vLsible proved weakening features. .Market on corn opened strong and active. Offerings were quickly absorbed by outsiders and an advance of c to i,c over Saturday was established. The strength was but temporary, local operators being free- sellers at th: advance. The market gradually declined to noGO'ic and then firmed up a little on light estimates for tomorrow. OrUs opened firm in sympathy with early strength In other grains. There was some little outside business, but tride was confined mostly to scalpers. As weakness In other grains became apparent market eased off s miewhat. but, held steady throughout most of tho season. Provision market very quiet. Some strength was phown early, but gradually prices gave way. The close was dull, a shade under Saturday's final figures. LOCAL GRA1 MARKET. INDIANAPOLIS. IND., MONDAY EVENING. Oct. 1.
