CLIQUE BUYS WHEAT
nd on the Advance Sells It Oat Again. CHICAGO, April 20. Wheat today av eraged highter, but left otT with a declina of o in May and c in July. Lynn Champiin and some others of the heavy local scalpers fought against any advance. The clique bought at the opening and sold on the advance. Corn was firm and closed with a gain of c. A moderate advance was established on provisions. In the wheat pit speculative feeling waa nervously apprehensive, and as a rule shorts were inclined to cover and there was considerable investment demand. Ca bles were firmer and there was renewed talk of foreign crop damago from drought, but private messages from Paris and Perlin denied that any damage had been inflicted on grain, while admitting that pas turage had been seriously shortend. The condition in Kansas was still said to be full of peril to the wheat crop. Some good rains were admitted, but dispatches from many parts of the state said that the recent freezing weather had done moro damage to wheat than the recent drouth had. The weather bureau alio reported killing frosts in Ohio, Kentucky and Ten nessee, and it was thought that much wheat must have been injured, as much oi the crop thero is in the joint, at which Etaae it ia susceptible of injury from frost. During the last hour wheat turned easy, mainly on free realizing sales, which was a disappointment to the bulls. Tho decrease of the corresponding week of last year was 2,JO',000 bushels. There was a growing feeling that the clique is fchifting around in its position and is likely to drop May and bull July. It sold Pardridge 60.0U0 Lushels May today, but immediately replaced it by a purchase of the sumo amount for July and has done the samo thing in many other instances. Ju y opened ahout lc to c lower and then rallied Ac again, became weak and prices declined ;c, ruled steady and the closing was lower than Saturday. Corn attracted a treat deal of attention, tho market ruling much more active, prico changes covering a wider r.mge, with increased outfide interest. The sentiment appeared to bu a continuation cd the ftronger tone developed late Saturday and etill higher prices were scored, extreme figures, however, not being maintained up to the close. There was a better outside demand, St. Louis beintr credited with purchasing freely. New York was both buying and selling. Shippers bought a good deal early, but sold considerably on the advance. The sharp demand induced many local f-horta to cover, and the offerings for the time being eight created a very lirm market. Indications of a better cash demand and strength in surrounding markets all tended to sustain values. Opening trades were at about the final figures of the previous sesnion, and after selling up ic worked back c. rallied :jc, eased oil c. ruled firm and closed with a gain of ii lc. There was a good business in oats and a stronger feeling. The market opened o lower for May. but steady for the other months. Good buying of " May and celling of July caused it to decline from j!c premium at the start to the same price us May at the close. The strength in corn and wheat also helped the the market and prices advanced 'i lc, reacted (- jic, and anil cioeed eteady with a net gain of (- c. There was a biV broad market in provisions most of the session. Prices got a very decided advance during the morning and part of the gain was lost before 1 o'clock. The freutest volume of trade, as well as the greatest action in prices, was on pork. The strensth whs also better maintained in this product; the t-tren.-th ut the ptart wus from tho hog market. 1 Receipts wtre .",! ;ü under the estimate of VI (l'l!, and Tureday estimate lighter at IS.Utii. There was some outeide huving on the early market. Strong local parties were good buyers on the advance. Sttever bought freely of pork for Wright or Cudahy ; perhaps Wright was a buyer besides. Armour took pork and fudahy lard and ribs. The Anglo und Dunham alno bought pork. C'hapin anil Kdwards and Chicago packing company tookiurd. Packers generally were good buyers. Shorts naturally covered stuff. On the good advance tho.-e with profits were free sellers. When the offerings became liberal prices went oil" quite cdiarply, but Etill held a good advance over Saturday ns follows: Pork from ' 0 to 37J : lard from 7 to Y2 and ribs öc higher for Septemher, with the other deliveries unchanged. Freishts were dull and easier at lc 011 wheat and lc for corn to Putialo. F.stimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, Ö40 cars; corn, .'5:10 cars; oats, 2-5 cars; hogs, ls.000. Ihe drought abroad still continues, and, although there were numerous report that It had not done any severe dsmsge, still there were large buying orders both her and in N'aw Yurk. 'Una was the principal cause ot the advance ths early part of the aesion. At lbs advanee, however, (her weie some very hsary selling order, some of tha large! shirts Incrsasing their lines ami some of the heaviest floor traders taking tUeir profits on wheat
bought below 74c. Outsida orders maintained price for awhile, butfinallr the crowd became filled up and the market gave way under the influence of the heavy local selling. The laree increaae on passage and the iücreaaed Iodia shipments is rather discouraging to holders. Speculators are now looking toward the crop situation abroad. A continuation of the drought there will bring liberal buyiDg orders. There was a good demand for course grain and the market was stronger all around. Soma heavy buyiog ot eorn on foreign account. There was also a good million demand for sample lots of wheat. 1 he light receipta of hogs at the yards and higher prices cauaed a strong provision market. The domestio demand., however, was not quite so good as the latter part of lait week. Speculators were free buyers. PRODUCE MARKETS.
