Money on call easy at l- percent; closing offered at per cent, hlme merctnUle paper, 537 per cent. Sterling exchange qvlet but steady at f4 So' lor s'xtyday bill and ft 874 for eight. Total tales 0! stocks to-day were shares. The stock market to-day was moderately active, and especially so during tbe morning boars, and while there was very little feature et Importance to the trading the market was weak and declining daring most of the day. The feeling on Missouri Paciri 3 seemed so have undergone a change for the better today, and though ll declaration of a Vi per cent, dividend was not made until too late to have any fcnmediate effect upon the course of the stock. It was firm to strong almost throughout the day, and roae to a point 't psr cent, alove Satur day's closing figure, mcbt ti which was re talced at the close. Tbe bears again turnel their at tention te -T-eadinp, and there were reveral stories afoat In rcgaid to the property, u-.o'igh the one which had the most lnCuenoc upen the price I the stock was Xo tbe effect that the company would not be able to ::cat its 4 per rcr t. loan. The piersnre was very severe tpen tbe sfck in tbe forenuon. and ita price wac forced down from to' 57' 4, the tracaa:tions l -eine heavier than have been teen in some months. Tfia other srroks which received rrecial attention fron the Ka-s were Canada Southern, I'nion Pacific and 6t Paul, which eve a weak tons to the general l'.tt. The rest of the list were corn jaratively culet. The Missouri Pacii'C erisode having come to an end there seems likely to be an improved feeling in the market, and an impredion galnc ground that a foreign syndicate will take the bonds now in the treasury of the Miffouri Tacifc and that the company rill return to a 7 pr cent, dividend. The opeain was irregular witn changes extending to H per itni. eliiier way, but tbe weakness made u-eil felt immediately and prices declined from the fcit alea. CHICAGO, March 2C The weather and the decrease in the visible supply were the leading Influenct-a in the grain market to-day. The blgtradeis, early in the aeasaion, did not show their band, and the crowd were contented to wait, consequent! the feeling was one of dullness at the start, but later quite a strong feeling in all tbe leading grains developed. Many Ol the heavy short sellers of last week had at least partly evened up their trades, and the markets were in shape to act naturally. In the wheat market the best card of the day for the bulls was the decrease of 811,000 bo in the visible supply. The opening was Kchigher'at 76? 4c. A i te selling at 76? ,c an d down to 76o, it advanced to and closed at77Jc. The speculative trade in coro was largely of a scalping nature, bat it eras lively nevertheless. The moderate receipts, present and prospective, and the railroad strike were the strengthening featnres, and trie abort Interest la not so concentrated and powerful as in wheat. It se area easier, and cvbea it has told the market dowo a short way. It is very apt to scramble to cover, and cause lively reactions, lhat was what happened to-day. k The wet weather, .with its probable bad e fleet upon the grading of grain, adds to the nervousness of the shorts. May corn opened at 604c went to 50c. then down XobO'tfi, then tip to Vic, back to 60?ic. up to Mc, and cloaca at5Ca Cwu followed wheat and corn. May opened at 80c and closed at Sic The feeling on pro visions was erratic, and the voiome of buslneaa la pork: was large, but in lard and abort rib only fair. For waa raided by the big traders at the start, and prices start d downward. lach decline brought out ( Iberal sized iota held on stop orders and iota on which margin bad been exhausted, and price declined 2-Sc. A FIENDISH MOTHER. She Glvea II er Three Children " Rough on Rats," and tbaat tVaita for tbeua to Die. New Yobk, March 24. Early this morning a dispatch was received at police headquarters stating that Minnie Lebkuecaaner, of 154 W. Fifty elghth-st, bad given poison to her three children Anthony, nine years old; Charles, leven, and Christopher, four years old. Anthony and Charles are dead and the other baa been taken to the New York hospital, but will not live. The mother was locked op in Capt. Rtilly's station house suffering from the effects of pouon. Nothing more awful has been recorded 03 the police blotters since the wife of Albert Friu, a German engraver, killed herself and three children with prusslc acid In a Grand-st tenement years ago, or since Dr. Retrain a wife played Llindman a burl with her children and ahot them to death in their palatial home oa Murray hill. In either of these two cases insanity furnished at once the excuse and tbe explanation of the unnatural deed. Mrs. Lebkuechaner is not Insane. She is a woman driven to ber act by trouble too great to bear. She walked in poorly dressed, pinched and wan with a worn shawl around ber at 2 o'clock this morning. Steadying herself against the desk she said in a harsh voioe that she had killed two of her children, and that the third waa dying In the house, " 1 The sergeant called an officer to go wiih uio woman at once, and they started for Fifty-eighth-st. together. On the way the woman told her story in a, listless, mechanical way, as though it was a worn-out theme that long since had lost all interest to her. Her aus band waa dead, the aald, had died lotir years ago; the had straggled to kee? the children together, but failed. They were Uken from her and sent to the Juvenile asylum. Only recently she had got them back with infinite trouble, opposed by poverty on one aide and the persecution ot her huaband'a relative on the other, bnt abe could not keep then. Work waa failing; food getting scarce. 62ie foresaw that she racst lose them soon. Rather than that she decided to kill them. 6he thought ft over, and fcy Wednesday had made bp ber mind fully. She aeot Anthony, the eldest of the boys, to a drug store, with a quarter to buy rat poison. The child bought 10 cent' worth of 'rough on rata." Mrs. Lebkuechaner stirred It fittest, and dividing tbe draught into three equal part, gave it to the boys to drink, ttcn t cop. Xhii vu ca Yc&cs

ily, the mother stayed with them all that day, gating about the house without exciting the attention of the tenants by any unusual coucern or any siprn of alarm. Wednesday night snd all day Thurslay the little E'iflerers lay in their dyirg agonies, with the mother hoveriug atout, seeing their little lives ebbiug out slowly but surely. They begged for water, and with the merciless cruelty of a fiend the mother gave them whisky to drink. The two eldest drank and cried that they were on fire. Thev begged to bo taken out in the back vard and have tbe hydrant turned on them, aa they were lumiEg up. Dm their feeble cries f oaud a daf ear wltn the mother, and did not reaih the outer world. A glance inside told bira that ber story was true, in their bed lay the two toys lecg dead and the little one gasping faintly cn the sola. Th room was meanly furnishfd, but clean. The mother stood unmoved locking on. The oCicer put ber under arrcit. He took the woman to the station and a hurried call wss sent for an ambulance. T ie little one was driven rapidly to the hospital ana everything was done there to save its me, but this was deemed hopeless. This morning the mother was tatan to Jeffer son Market police couri aud thence sent to the torontr'a ollice, where she was committed to the Tombs. WILL HER REASON RETURN? I'atbelic and Curious Story of a Once lSenutlTul Woman. There resides at Atlanta a woman whose mind has been clouded many yean. K'ie lives in obscurity, and is seldom seen in public. Recently she has displayed the keenest interest in the new church bell that is to be raised above the Church of the Immaculate Conception. She believes that at tbe first stroke of tbe bell her reason will be restored. For many years she resided In CharlebtcD, S. C. within sound of the Sr. Michael's chimes. More than twenty yetn sco her reason left her on account of the death of a young man to whom ehe vi as to have been married. Ehe was arrayed in her bridal robes, waiting for the c mir g of the room ; but hours passed ard "He cc nittb cot," she said. Just as a messenger was dispatched to ascertain the csnee cf the delay the chimes of old St. Michael's broks the stillness of the night. Suddenly the face of the waiting bride grew u pallid as the orange blossoms on her brow, and she screamad: "Ah. did yon hear what the chimes said? He is is dead! dead! dead ! lie will never com?, never, never, never! 1 hear it as a messenger from a passing soul." And with these words she fell amid the scene cf light and beauty, and all believed tht was dead. Hat she recovered ouly to find that her strange premonition was verified. The young man while on his way to his marriage was thrown f:om Iiis orriage and killed instantly. That ni ;ht her reason snapped, and ever since the has been a heart-broken, demented womrn. She has lived here for many years, and has on several occasions made liberal gifts to charitable associations. She is a wreck of a most beautiful woman, and her manner la refined and even stately. At limes ahe is rational and converses Intelligently. Speaking to Ler on the subject of her restoration of mind when the new bell resounded she said: "Yes, all ysa have heard about my faith in the ringing of that bell is true. I believe that the first chime that ring will restore my mind, and the clouds that have rested on my brain so long will disappear and I will be a sane woman. God has revealed this to me. The soul of my dead lover will speak: through the tongue of that bell just as It did twenty years ago, and will proclaim to me peace of mind and strength of reason. Yes, ring! ring! ring out the old, ring In the new!" she cried, and in a moment more the cloud was over her mind and she chattered to herself, seeming oblivions of any one's presence. It is said that the hope that she places in her restoration permeates her thoughts day and night, and she Is waiting anxiously to hear tbe first chime of the belL She walks past tbe church early every morning, and keep her eye riveted on the cross above, and mutters something. Then silently she returns to her home, and with a dim old picture of her dead lover and her roses in hand she prays for an hour or more. This peculiar phase in this case will be watched with great interest by those who believe in the restoration of mind and body through the power of faith. A ratable Spectacle. I Philadelphia Times. Senator Ingalia presents the most pitiable spectacle that has ever been presented In high official circles in Washington for many years. Re is president of the senate, filling the chair of the second officer of the union, and has excluded himself from the courtesies of official life by a personal assault upon the president that would disgrace a fish-market brawl, and has been rejected by the Loyal Legion because he attempted admission to that respected soldiers' organization by fraud, as the unanimous report of Its committee that Iogalls never was a soldier folly proves. In addition he has called down upon himself tbe positive condemnation of both soldiers and citizens of alt parties by hie fliernt Indecencies. In political debate on CJ! CwAJ

One cf tbe objects of art and envy is an imported side UDle not mucn larger in snrface than a bread plate made in mosa'.c of lapis-lasnla. malachite or white onyx. The charlatanical Yankee wbo speads fabulous sums in the purchase of these little stands, and carefully and religiously covers them with art scarfs of ber owa rcanufacture, or loads the earfaeewitt cheap bric-a -brae, fails in good taeie and judgment. The tailor costume seut oat from Paris, remember, is not like a Lindon tailormade gown. One that I saw last week was composed of a Ehot gold and brooz velvet coat opening over a Bkirt of striped gold and bronze silk. The embroidered reyers and collar of the coat opened over an embroidered crape chemisette of canary and gold. The coat sleeves had lan:e embroidered directory cniT. A gold belt with large garnet stones came for the waist. Tbe hat, of brown and gold shot velvet, was a Gainsborough, with a canary colored lining braided with gold. A band of gold and garnets encircled the crown, a cloul of brown feathers shaded to fcanarv trimmed it. " . Ayer's Hair Vigor stimulates the hair to a vigorous growth.
