The bear party was again active and aggressive and while their opponents were indisposed to support prices the manipulation for a decline had full swing. Advantage was taken of the unfavorable rumors in regard to the grangers, chief among which was the story that treasury stock of the Northwee tern was being sold, to which were added the Influence of the decr aslng earnings of the St. Paul and the rate troubles of the Northwest These beside furnished a pretext for raiding the entire list and a number of the most active stocks were forced down from 1 to 2 points. Western Union was the only strong spot In the market and served to check the declining tendency for some time during the afternoon. Its special firmness was ane to the continued circulation of stories la regard to the acquirement of the Baltimore A Ohio telegraph system. The persistent attacks of the raiders, however, wiped out most of its early gains before the close. The open ing wis weak at declines of from to ji per cent from Saturday's final figures and while Western Union was decidedly strong, the remainder of the list was quite Irregular and soon became weak. New England showed considerable ataength in the forenoon and losses in tbe general list were kept down to fractions in tbe afternoon, when the weakness, displayed by Richmond and Westpoint was tbe signal for a general decline. The attack was especially heavy upon St. Paul during tbe last hour and most of the low was mace at that time. The Joee wss quiet, but weak at or Lear the lowest prices of the day. The black eye given to whrat by the visible supply statement was the leading feature on change to day. When tbe figures were announced at noon showing an increase of 634,000 bushels In wheat for the week, there was an Immediate efiect on the marcet. Enough of the statement was known all morn iug. to that an Increase was no surprise to the trade. The surprise was in the amount of increase. Prices hd already declined and slightly reacted. Then, too, the posted statement stowed that the increase was confined principally to Minneapolis and the canal and lakes. Nearly all tbe winter whet points showed adecn aie, and St. Louis for the first time tiis season was in the decrease column. Though there was nothing apparent In the general situation to prove a serious bar to better prices in the near future, the 31.030 bushels looked large nd another y2i decline was at once added to tbe decline of tbe morninsr, and December wheat soon touched 73o, to uurter the cloe on eaturday and ; below the opening figure. The decline for all options was rearly uniform, being about l'ilc, and the close being at Inside prices, Dexsem er opened at 73?'aC, a decline of C from Saturday's latet figures sold to 73c, re acted to 730. declined to73c. andtfcentuddenly to 73c, closing finally at 727;c. May opened at 7'.c, and declined with Blight fluctuations to7Sc Corn was entirely tn the hands of ho local crowd, and the market was largely dictated by a lo'al operator who was both a buver and seller at times, but the tendency was downward, and the closing pricts were a shade lower than those of Saturday. The decreare of 174 CO0 in the visible supply had no effect. The extensive charters, vkJ.tou bushels, were not sufiiciently public to affect the pic The pit was umunally quiet early, but there was better busiuesi before the close. In oats there wa a fallirg off in the speculative business as compared with tbe cloe of last week, but in the carq oats by sample there was about the customary trade. In the speculative market the Alienations were so very small that no material chaDge from Saturday's closing prices was quotable, and cash oats were veiy stea ly. Provisions were unsettled, but a fir business was tratsdCted at an irregular range of prices. Kelt ipts of hogs were liberal and prices were easier. The report rf stocks on hand September 30, made a mailer showing: than generally expected, and exhibited a decrease during the month of 27,000 barrels mess pork. 72,500 tierces ontract lard and 10,226,000 pounds short ribs. The small stocks of lard made shorts nervous and they rovertd rapidly, making trade in that article quite lively and advancing prices 2 :y.c, tbe mar futures recording the greatest gain. We are gratified to learn from the semi official announcement put forth from tbe White House that Mr. Cleveland will pay his own way as he swings around the great circle. Of course, it would not do for him to journey as a deadhead. The Inier-Stata Comn.erce Act, which he himself signed, to tey not bin of the sharpened public H-ibkvl official propriety, will prevent w bat is technically known as "(he extentlon of ccurten&b" by the various railroad tcmpunies to President Cleveland. It is aDDonrcid that "tbp Fresident will travtl ts nearly like a private citizen aa tfie circumstances will ptraalt." Few private citizen?, however, can aflord to travel as the Precident intends to travel, lie lies fngaged a special train far the ntire distaoce, we are told, consisting of tn tni'ie, a bzggege and supply car, and t wo palace cars. This train will convey him for about 4,500 miles, in stages divided aa follows: Washirgton to Baltimore, 42; Ballimore lo Harriabure. S5; Uarnsbureto Pltfaburg. 213; Tittsburg to Indianapolis, 381; In dianapolis to St. Louis, 2ii); Bt. Loqis to Chicago, 282; Chicago to Milwaukee, 85; Milwaukee to Madison, 82; Madison to St. Paul, 270; St. Taul to Minneapolis, 10; Winnfcftpolis to Omaha, 380; Omaha to Kansas City, 197; Kansas City to Memphis, 487; Memphis to Nashville, 230; Nashville to Atlanta, 291; Atlanta to Moutfrotntry, 175; Montgomery to MorrlstowD, 388; Morristown to Salisbury, 233; Baliebury to Danville, 97; Danville to Washington, 233; Total, 4.43G. We suppose that tbe most reasonable terms on which a private individual could engage transportation over this route by epec al train, without asking any personal or official favors, would,be at the rate of $2.25 a mile. It ml&ht cost a good deal more. At the lowest rate, therefore, the President's bill for bis special train would amount to $9,981 almost ten thousand dollars. Besides this, the traveller would be Obliged to pay the regular lares tor himself, hla family, servants, and guests. The expenses of tbe commissary department would be an additional and not by any means an insignificant Item. Few private citizens can aflord to pay twelve thousand dollars or more for a three weeks' trip undertaken for educational purposes. These facts speak volumes for tbe President's intensely patriotic desire to ete and know more of his own country. He Knew flow It Was. Detroit Free Press. "WelJ, my little boy," he said to his neighbor's son, "so you've got back home, eh?" "Yes sir.'' "Been out in the country rusticating?" "No, sir; we've been ont la the country Living on grandpa's folks.".
HOW WASHINGTON DIED.
Medical Men Asert that He Was Bled and llliftteredto Death. Washington dispatch to New York World : Thirty members of the late Medical Conpre&s met in a Eocial way after the regular business of the day. in the parlor of a gueat at one of the hotels. These deleeatts were elderly medical men of the socalled old school of doctors, but presenting progressive niinda of the allopathic branch ot tbe rredical profession; Force of them hüd been professors in KieJicil colleges many years ago. These old friends in a convertetional way compared notes relative to the redical charges which have taken place in the metbods.cf treatment of dis eases, tbe large and freqntnt doses of calomel ace other powerful remedies administered to their pitients in the practice of forty and fifiy years ago, compared with the almoet infinitesimal doses now pre Ecriccd, and the now total abandonment of some remedies and modes of treatment which wtre in Tgeneral practice then. The old-time doctor and even the physician of but recent date formerly carried in his coat-pocket a formidable lance, the tight of which frightened his nervous patient. With that instrument he proceeded by way of preliminary preparation for a "course of medicine," to open a large vein in the sick person's arm and therefrom draw from a pint tn a quart of blood. Then followed the inevitable prescription of fifteen to twenty grains of calomel, accompanied by a bottle of castor oil, and End the patient would be "laid up" thereafter for some diys encased in recovering from his heroic medical treatment. Now phlebotomy or blood-lettins has been almost wholly abandoned. Calomel when prescribed at all is given in half-grala dosf 9 at intervals of three or four hours, and so on to the end of the list of old poptUar remedies. One of the physicians present, pursamg this theme, astonished his hearers by aseeriing that the "Father of His Country." General George Washington, did not die a natural death, but was killed by his doctors, litre several voices simultaneously exclaimed: "That's a libel! Where is your evidence ?" Thereupon the supposed libeler produced from a Georgetown, D. C, newspaper, printed in 17'Jt. an accDunt of the illness, dtath and burial of Gen. Washingten, together with tbe certificate of the phyticiar.p, frs. Craik and Dick, who treated the illustrious patient in his last il!nEs. The certificates of these physicians, who resided about fiftten miles from Gecigetown, thored that Gen. Waihlinton, liaving been exposed to rauionF.idsy, December 13. in the night of that aay wts attacked with chills, accomuanied with pain in the upper and fore put of the throat, coughing, a difficult rather than jtitful swallcvrirg, succeeded by fiver ard quick acd laborious respiration. "Gen. Washirgton," Eays tbe account, regarding the attack aa only a severe cold, would not send for a phvsiciaa, but called in one of his servants, a bleed sr, so called, wbo took from the sick man'3 arai nearly a pint cf blood, which wss good'y portion of tbe vigorous, healthy life of the patient. The patient was abaut in that cor dition until the arrival of his physicians at 10 o'clock tbe next moralDg, Siturday, when the doctors proceeded to repeat the bleeder's operation, and twice within a be at fcur bonis took otter two pints orquart8 of blood. In the tnterrltn were employed two copious bleedings, a blister wss applied tn the pns affected, two mcdPrste doses of calomel were given, encreeded by repeated doses of tartar emetic tmountiDg to five or six grains, with no ether eflect than a copious discharge from tie bowels." "This was treatment of the heroic kind," interjected tbe alleged libe!er, "wüich was enor-gh to kill any ordinary well man, and it was evidently doing the business for the geiiera), for tbe learnpd doctor idd: " 'The powers of life seemed now manifestly yielding to the force of the disorder. Blisters were applied to the extremities, tcgether with a cataplasm of bran and vinegar to the throat. Speaking, which was pe.infnl from the beginning, now becams almost impracticable. Respiration re w more and more contracted acd Imperfect until 11:30 o'clock on Saturday night, when, retaining the posession of his intellect, he expired;without a struggle.' "No wonder," remarked the alleged libeler. "How could he struggle after lobingall tbe blood In his body, with huge bliettrs aiding in the depletion of vital btrergth, acd his stomach crammed with calomel and tartar emetic eo that there was no room for food or fluids, which he si.eulJ have bad, to keep up the system? Poor man, how he must have suffered; and he couldn't make them stop their torlure, although he seems to have tried to do so. Cut the medical men certify that alter repeated tfiorts to bs nnderstood, he succeeded in exDressing a desire that he might be permitted to die without interruption. There, my brother doctors, are j on convinced? Wasn't that a clear case of malpractice?" 'No, sir," humorously responded a brother doctor. "That was in accordance with the treatment adopted by that eminent physician Dr. Sacgrado, who had a lerge practice In Spain over two hundred years ago, which practice, as imparted by the reiiuwned Sangralo to his apt student Gil Bla, consisted in copious bleeding htd keeplDe the patient's body filled with bot water."
