The heroism ol John Vorbanck in savins Lis infant child from certain death nearly cost him his own life yeettrday afterroon. Ilia eighteen-months-eld babe had toddled down to the Northwestern Railroad track, near his home, and, unseen by its mother, aat down between the tracks to play. The whistle frcm an approaching switch engine attracted the attention of the father, who was at woik in the yard, and glancing up he was horrified to see his child sitting on the track calmly watching the awift approach of the heavy engine. After an matant of mute terror the father rushed toward the track, and throwing himself directly in front cf the engine seized the child and threw its little form safely to one Bide of the track. He bad no tim9 to save himself, bat was caught by one of the wheels and thrown prostrate acro33 the rail. Ilia left leg was horribly mingled, and it was afterward necessary to amputate it. He also received bad injuries about the hips and head. Vorbanck is a young, hard-workin man, and his been married aKout three years, this being his only child. Ao Entirely Mew Phase. Chicago, May 15. Until now the Chicago Brick-layers' Union has held aloof from local labor organizations and has even maintained independence of the Erick-Iayers' International Union. A meeting of the workmen composing the Building Trades Council decided last night totaie advantage of the lockout against the brick-layers to bring them to terms. Resolutions were adopted that if the bricklayers did not join the Traaes Council before Tuesday, the Council would assist the International Union to rout the ultra independents. Apparently Chicago bricklayers nrnst now surrender, either to their employers or to their fellow workmen. The Chicago Trades Aawmbly to-day indorsed the strike of the bricklayers, and formulated a circular on the subject to be tent to assemblies in all the principal cities In the country. The circular urges a strenuous effort to dissuade workmen from coming to Chicago daring the present disturbances. This action has no connection with the resolution of the Building Trades Council to force the bricklayers into line with the council,

The course ol prices was upward during the forenoon, and many stocks reached higher figures than had before been een on ths present adViince. Th3 limited bayng was of good quality, but ths foreigners were doing little or nothing esccpt la Union raeiüc ard Wabash preferred. The forenoon's Improvement, however, upon the circulation of rumors of labor riots in Chicago wa3 nearly wiped t. To this c2ect frae realizations also aided, bot when the rumors were Ebown to be false, further improvement was the imzne JiitereiuIt. The iluctnations in the majority of tha active list were comparatively smail, though a few stocks made large advances. Among these may be noted Marshall Coal, which was admitted to dealing last week, and which Is now being subjected to manipulation. Others prominent In the advance ere Hock Is'aad and Pullman. Others In the general list showing considerable strength were Northwestern, Lake Snore and Canada Southern, the latter being affected by a rumor that a traflic arrangement fcad boen made with the Wabash which would throw contldcruble bmiress over the road. The cpenirg was generally firm but there was en inclination to heaviness in the cany trading and slight lot s were sustained. The market f.ulckly rallied under the lead of Ucckins Valley and Lcuisville and Nashville. The heavy tone wss renewed btfore noon, however, Rock Island being a caiispicuouj exception. Closlrg prices show a few decllnts for insisninificant fractions while the great bulk of the list are materially higher. Marshall Coal gained 3K; Kock Island ZXA, and Louisville & Xaahvilla 1 per cent. F.ailroad bcrnla were active to-day, sales aggregating fl.107.CC0. The special feature was the Atlantic and Pacific Incomes, which were active anJ strong upon the increased earnings of the road and the fact that nothing but the first mortgage is ahead of them. Their sales to-day aggregated J1.192.C0O. Ohio Southern Incomes also attracted a large amount of attention, their sales reaching f SC3.0C0. Though the market was for the most part firm, conslaerable irregularity was shown. Ohio Southern incomes rose 3.'to 6C); Atlantic and Pacific Incomes l?to37X; Alton and Terre Hau'.e dividend bonds 2 to 45: Texas Central firsts 5 to 80; f., B. and W.
