The Post-Dispatch this afternoon prints a statement made by II. M. Brooks, alias Maxwell, now on trial for the murder of C. Arthur Preller, which will constitute the defense of Erooks, aud which will be urged to the utmost by his attorneys in the trial. The statement was made to Mr. John J. JenniDcs, the present city editor of the Tost-Dispatch, and it has been approved by Brooks' attorneys. Mr. Jennings prefaces the statement with some remarks, the chief points of which are as follows: "Mazwell's explanation of the death of lrellcr is his only defense. That explana was made in writing to his attorneys, Messrs. Martin and Fauntleroy, many months ago, and Maxwell will in the witness stand repeat it. living it. he said his desire all along had been 10 unburden himself to the public, and allow his actions previous to and after the crime to substantiate his tieclara tiens. These actions show that he neither JTf meditated a crime or tried to conceal one, or from the moment of his arrival at the Southern Hotel until his departure for San Francisco every act and almost every word of his has been the property of the public. The only act,' stiel Maxwell, 'about which there has been any doubt at all has been the act of which I am bow accused. I recognize now as much as anybody could that I made a mistake in withholding my defense, but what could I do? I was here alone in a strange world, with no one to advise me but mv counsel, and I followed the advice he gave me to the letter.' " The attorneys for the ieSeuse will not deny the identity of the remains, but will acknowledge the death of Preller at Maxwell's hands, and insist that th death was due to accident. The following la Brooks' statement: Mr. Preller was suffering from a private disease, ior which 1 bad previously prescribed, mixing the medicines myself from the bottles in the medicine ease I carried with me; but bis ailments bad reached a stage when it was necessary for me to male certain investigations. 1 was obliged to use a catheter, and in using a catheter when the parts were inflamed I had previously applied chloroform in order to produce a condition of narcotism. I ued chloroform in this manner on a man named Harrison in Liverpool without any serious result. I eiplaiDed the process to Mr. Treiler, and told him what I should have to do. He was not only willing, but was very anxious for me to treat him in this manner. During the day I purchased four onnces of chloroform, which was standing in a bottle on the edge of mv washstand. This took plat e Minday afternoon and was intended as a preparation for the operation. In washing some instruments I overturned the bottle of chloroform. This was probably 3 o'clock, and after getting my instruments ready, I went out to secure some more chloroform. 1 went to the drug store, 1 don't know where, but the store near the hotel (Fernowl), and asked for the chloroform. The lerks. or some persons there, have said that I was excited at In a hurry. This was not so. I sat down in a chair in the drug store for more than a quarter of an hour and was altogether very JeisuxelT about my business, for there was no hurry. If I am not mistaken I had a long conversation with some one in the drug store. When 1 got the chloroform I repaired to my room. Prelier had been in and out of mv room and his own all afternoon. About 5 p. m. we began the operation. I administered the chloroform in the usual way holding a saturated cloth to tfce nose. Preller passed through the first suive all rieht. It took several moments I don't exactly know how long. Then he entered the sec-fj-p' and here the terrible result came: I discovered w? late lfc -1C was dvinK- Imagine my horror when tm ilK I 'dawned uroü e! 1 was wild with fright. b had presence of mind eno'igb to cut the tirt and undershirt from the body, and Seuing a wet towl.I bathed him around Ite Eet m and shoulders for a half hour or more. 1 did not give hiui ud until 1 was ready to drop from exhaustion, aud my efforts were not relaxed until be had been dead sometime, lie had stripped to the shirt and undershirt. What did I do when I saw my friend was dead? What could 1 do.' I didn't anow what to do except to drink, and I drank freely. I drank everything I could get. W hat were my thoughts? I hadn't any. Ali 1 remember is that I drew on a pair of drawers the tirst tnat fell into my hau. U. and put the body into my trunk, from which I had removed everything. I put it iu the trunkan hour after Preher'e death. What was done beul tie this I have no recollection of. Liouor and consternation Lad taken possession of me. I remained in my room that night the same room in which the remains were and it would be a lie tor me to say that 1 slept, for f didn't, and 1 was glad when morning came. W hat l did after leaving my room you know, fr it has all been printed. Was a catheter found among your medical in stinmcnts-"' "I don't know. I carried some of my Invtnments away in a valise and threw them Into the Parinc." Had yon any plans of disposing of the body?" "None whatever. I meant to leave it there ex petting that it would be discovered sooner than it wan, and thiuaing that a post mortem would reveal the true state of farts that Preller ha t met bis death while undergoing such an operatioa as 1 bave designated." "How about Preller's money?" "1 know noth ing atoui Preller's money I hd twenty of money of my own or I couldn't h.ive made the long trio that 1 did make." Mr. Jennings (closes by stating that this is only a synopsis of the full written statement in the hands of P.rooks' counsel, which gives all the details of the Sunday occurrences in Koom 144 Southern Hotel, bat the attorneys refused to give the written statement, and by their advice Ilrooks declined to say aiy more. According to his own story the cutting oil" oi 1 Teller s mustache, the inscription about "traitors" fonnd in the trunk and all the other queer incidents connected with the trapedy are to be attributed to his liquor arid fear crazed condition. State bonds were dull and firm. ilailroad bonds were more active: sales 52.804,000: of which Erie second consols contributed 3 1,001,000. Tne market clewed ii regular with most of the issues higher. The proposition made to the Houston and Texas landholders contemplates a scaling down of interest and an extension of the time of maturity, past due interest to be funded into some new kind of bond. It is understood tne proposition comes from Mr. Huntington. The bonds of this company to-day were quiet, and, while the general t-s show an advance of 34, the main line tirst, coupons off, are 1 lower. The early dealings showed considerable neaviness in a great many stocks. The loaning rates were much easier, and there was a plentiful supply of stock to )e had for the asking, indicating that the short interest had leen materially reanctd. Later in the day even the favorite stocks gave way, and final figures are close to the lowest of the day. There was good buying of Erie, however, and" the evidence points tci tue same party that has advanced St. Paul and its kindred stocks as the purchaser. The market opened steady, and after a slight du Hue in some stocks )ecame strong throughout, and material advances were made in the first hour. These were, however, generally lost before noon, and the market wits comparatively steady until toward the close, when quotations v'iiiu yielded, and the market closed steady. Almost everything on the active list is lower tonight, though only for fractional amounts. Chicago, Burlington and Qnincy shows an advance of 1 percent, on very light business. Erie is up per cent. St. Paul was the most active stock, followed by Lackawanna, Lake Shore and Erie, in the order named. The market closed with the following bid: 3 per cent, bonds lOO'i Louisville A Nash.. The Mark Lane Express, in its review of the British grain trade during the past week, says: The moisture of the weather has immensely Improved the prospects of the spring crops. The wheat trade is weaker. The salts of Lnglish wheat during the week were 0o 596 quarters at "2s 4d, against 4,471 quarters at 3. Id during the corresponding week last year. Flour is dull, but steady. The foreign wheat trade is very depressed. Sellers of American and Russian wheats are lowering their demands, whien has a tendency to weaken the marketGood mixed American corn is very scarce in the spot, and the recent advance of 3d is maintained. I ive cargoes ot wheat arrived ; four cargoes were sold and two remained. The sales included one cargo of Californian, which was sold at 9d advance, owing to the exigencies of the Liverpool market. Trade forward is weak. 1 here was a poor attendance at to-day's market. There was a retail demand fo-wheats, and prices were rather weaser. Flour dull and difficult to sell. Beans were Is dealer. Shultz, Commercial Editor of the Pioneer Tress, state that the weather for the past few days has been fine, and the condition of the crops is generally good, the exceptions being in the low ground of the Upper Red River Valley, in Southern Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, and particularly where the rains have been heavy and frequent and seeding and corn planting are backward. Some of the farmers in Southern Minnesota will not be seeded at all. In the James River Valley crops never looked so well, and the prospects along the Northern Pacific are also brilliant. In Central Minnesota the usual excellent crops are promised. Corn planting will be generally finished by next week, with the exception of the low grounds in Iowa aud Nebraska, Lightning-Kod Sharpers.
