Special to the Sentinel. Chk am, May 15. Wheat on 'Change this weeit Las t een a very sick. deal. The market has been weaker than at anytime this season, and the j.riiuL8s to!d lower than it ever sold before in this ii arktt during the month of May. There tie no "knils'' left in the pit. Ti e Lester party, wlo were the only "longs" of prominence, sold cnt as soon as W oerslioffer's death was announced frcm New York, and it was said that considerable i the wh at thrown over was the property of the ".t.ea-ed millionaire. Cables contained no enriiragement for holders, and the ,-bears" declared the little wheat "worked'' for export was reported three times over. hath day prices sani to a l'wer level than had previously leen tout bed on the crop, bit this exited very little comment aa it seernvd lo be considered a mattet of course lhaUj notations kLc r.id go steadily downward, if they had been higher ther' would prubaLIy have been some cxr.t'iatnt The market nas apparently not as much reactive vitality now p s it tad six weeks 50, wLiiethe surroundings re unmistakably more ti reusing in their character, the n-w crop lieius t: that mu h nearer and tLe possibility of damrt Ly cc.;l no longer existing; then, too, there is cvtr 40,U0,HM) bushels fi oid grain iu sight, an.l idUcj seems to want, ,0a every fractional rally everybody has a little wh'eat to sell, and wbilj this irsnsa lasts it is useless to attempt to predict tae lergtts to which it may be earried. Lut it is not dift.cti'.t to see that it will carry prices down far ttiow their natural level. and the me-st persistent selling is always done very near tte bottom. There must come "a time when this wheat will do to buy. although those w ho started to get in "at the bottom" and then doubled up to win out have long ago gone broke. The labor troubles have quieted down so far as fear of violence is concerned, but the whole question is still very much unsettled, a fact whijh is as demcraliJig to tbe grain markets as to general business. heat can im be raised for a creat deal less money than it cttld be a few years ago. and the rest of transportation has been cheapened nearly s mueh as that of production, but there can not be much margin left from selling at present quotations. Holders have all along claimed that l.r.rpe needed our wheat must have it but although grain can now be sold ia cuinpetiiioa with the "pauper labor" 01" other countries, it fails to move. It Is undeniable that the present prices o not yield a profit, and this state of things esc not last lorever. Cudahy. Jones and the big tears t f tee past year are not doing much now, f.cd the selling now is largely by those who hare )M s buyers. Thee traders must be getting Lert" up'to their eves, and some shrewd op v rators are at any time 5iable to give the deal a m'.en twist. If values are not low enouch to buy at ttey are certainly too low to be caught "shDrt ' at. ( cm i firmer. The fear of com getting out of ici'.k ii. if shipped to New York, operates a a etfig en the movement, but sutlitrient grain is pcicg forward to make sellers very nervous, la rger receipts are expected. 1 r. Isions are alout steady. Shipments of all kindscf produce are liberal, but it looks as if pork would have to go still lower. Tribute I'aid to the Memory of it Colored Man. v'AVA.vsiH, Ga., May 15.-The death of Henry Ttdd, t f Darier., which txk place one day last wtek, has developed a singular story of triumph ever adverse circumstances. The offering, however, was of a less determined character than last week, and with some pretty good covering, notably on the part of large shorts, the decline was fully recovered, and a good, steady tone carried to" the close. The new crop was sparingly offered and comparatively steady throughout. NEW ORLEANS. May 17.
