He holds that to a congested, torpid and diseased liver can be traced many diseases of diverse symptoms, and affectin;; various organs. M.inyof thte diseases are usually treated a if primary affections, both physician and patient being do imed to disappointment by n utter la. -k of favorable ru";s; ior to treat a Jifcae successfully we must have a neat eonie.'tijii of its true nature. Ihr Honfkcrpcr" of Health. Ti c liver is th- largest gland in the human sysUm. It is tne great purifying organ of tbe systim, and has very appropriately been termed the "housekeeper" of our health. The Imi'Ortance of the liver as a blood purif in? and excretory organ an not be overestimated. The foul and morbid matter absorbed from the various tissues aud taken into the blood, is received therefrom by a healthy liver and converted into bile. When the liver becomes torpid or con- ' gested, it fails to eliminate this vast amount of noxious substance, which, therefore, remains to poison the blood aud be conveyed to every part of tbe system. Nature tries to work off this poison , through other channels and orpins the lungs, ; skin, etc. but these organs become overtaxed in performing tnis labor, in addition to thei natural funcr-ons, and can not locg withsund thepressure, but become variously disease!. ' j Heart Diseas. j I tlf I !co !. surcharged with dfcKy a :v ununited ; poison, as the result of torpor 01 tbe liver, unduly ! stimulates the n rves of tbe beart. and produces tfhrouic irritatioa. palpitation, or excitement of H at organ, developing forms of heart Urease. 4 Dyspepsia and Costiveneas. I ke stomach aud bowels cannot escape becoming affected, as a direct resultof liver disease, and stiveness, hemorrhoids, dropsy, dyspepsia, or üarrti a, and many other forms of t hroni- div , are among the natural results. Kend us ten cents in stamp for our Complete Treatise on Disease of the Liver and Dij:esije Orjtans. sick Headache. Tbe brain is not properly refreshed end stimulated by the unhealthy blood; heive dullness tliiinefs, sick headache, bilious headache, sleepy r nervous feelings, gloomy forebodings and irritab.lityo: temper. Skin Diseases. Tbe biood poison, not being worked off by the l.ver, when that organ is diseased or sluggish, accumulates and filtering through the skin bo;oines so acrid as to produce blotches, pimples, eruptions, pustules, scaly incrustations, lamp, inflamed patches, acne, impetigo, prurigo, psoriasis, uütrheum, tetter; or, becoming still more virulent, the poison breaks out in boils, carbuncles, r. leers, or old sores, that are difficult to heal. Send u ten cents and we will forward to yo'i post paid, our Com pi ate Treatise on Skin diseases, j.jnstrat' d with life-like colored plates. Scrofalous Diseases. A Iodj; series of diseases commonly kuown as sen. fulous, is caused by torpor of the liver the vnt of proper excretion of the poisonous festering matter circulating iu the blood. These cause swellings about the neck, enlarged tonsils, scrofulous sore eyes. ruuniDg ulcers, discharges fro.n tbe ears, catarrh or ozena, fever sores, white swellings, hip-joint disease, ulceration of bones, intere1 swellings, ulceration of the liver, kidneys and uterus, and other maladies too numerous to mention. mr Complete Illustrated Treatise on Scrofulous Disease, such as "Fever sores" "Hip-joint Diseases," "White Swellings," and "Old Sores," or Cicer. will be sent, post paid, to any address on rnipt of ten cents in stamps. CoDnnption, The bile -poisoned blood, resulting from laulty n t;.u f the liver, passes from tbe upper and ribt cavity of the heart to the lover cavity, item e directly to the lungs, circulating through 11 parts of the most delicate organs. The tissues of the lungs are poisoned and irritated, and thus invite the scrofulous humors with which the blood is burdened. In this wav consumption, nhich is scrofula of the lungs, so defined by all the moat scientific authors, is established. Ourviews on the nature of Consumption, Bron eliitis. Laryngitis, and kindred affections, together with proofs of their curability, are to be found in full in a Complete Treatise, on these affections, which will beent to any address on receipt of t n ctr.t in stamps. Itronchitis. The bile poisoned bland is in a measure oxygenized and purified bj the lungs; but in this effort these organs are ovet worked and irritated, and the foul blood-poison may be smclied in the man's ffenive breath. Nervous cough, bronchitis, and 'Rsumpt oi it-!', are the natu a' rem t. The lungs would not have b ! oaae diseased had the liver done it w hole duty. Aithma. This spannoH? and distressing malady is generally the result of rcfle nervous action, produced 1 y impure blood the indirect resul:s, in other wrrls. of improperly-performed function on the part of the liver. Kidney Disease. The ii . pure blood, w hich a torpid liver fails to purify, affects not only the heart and lungs but alM other important organs. In its circulation it ! s from the lungs buck to the upper left cavity of the heart, thence to the low er cavity, and thence through the arteries and capillarie4 to every tissue and organ of the system. Tbe kidneys are amona the mst Imjortant of those organs, furnishing, as they do. an important excretion that of the nrine. They become diseased, being irritated and congested by tie presence of bi'e-poisoned blood, and P.i ight's Disease, I'iabetes. and kindred aflectiOD, result. The urine becomes scanty, highcolored, and at times loaded with red deposits, or other disease product, which produce irritation and inflammation of the bladder, thus adding another malady to the already-lengthy catalogue Of ailments. Cmr Complete Illustrated Treatise on diseases of the Vrinary Organs ii sent to any address, postpaid, on receipt of ten cents in staxnt.
Malarial Poisons, which are absorbed from the atmosphere taken into the lungs, arc eliminated, or rejected, irotn the blood, by the liver, when the organ is in good condition, but when it fails in such performances, the system suffers fror.i chills, fever, (Umb tu, congestive chills, and otter phases of milarial poisoning. The Symptoms of Liver Disease and its resultant aud kindred affections may differ according to tbe circumstances aptitude, temperament, age, or constitutional weakness ot tho ln t;vidual and thecomplications of the disease and its stae of advancement. Not unfreiuent!y the complexion becomes pule and sallow, and there is pnffiness under the eyes, bilious orsick headache, bitter taste in the mouth, tongue coated white or covered with a brown fur, bat ting cough, Jever, restlessness sometimes an unnatural greasy appearance of the skin, at others it is dry and hars't, has saly or branny eruptions, pimples, dark blotches and troublesome itching. The W iter i fre-iuemiy scanty and higb-colored, ami. if allowed to saud, deposits a sediment. There is a depression of spirits and a decided tendency to be discouraged and despondent. The functional powers of t e stomach are impaired, there is loss or irregularity of appetite, uneasiuc-s in region of the stomach, oppression, sometimes nausea and 'witerbrash." or indigestion, flatuknev, and acid ciutatir ns: the bowel become
i regular, usually i-onstipated, and occasionally subject to obstinate diarrhea, attended with colicky pains. During the day, the circulation is sluggish, and the feet and hands are apt to be cold, but at night the the pulse is accelerated, and the palms of the bands and the soles of tne feet have a burning sensation. The foregoing symtoins are not all present in any one case, nor any two casts alike in every respect. Common Sense Treatment. We apical to the reader if it is not reasonable to suppose that all these maUdics that can be clearly traced to a common origin, or cause, shonld be cured by the application of a remedy known to remove such cause? All these several divisions of maladies are many times treated as ir entirely unlike 111 their nature aud demanding different classes of remedies, accord intr to the pecii'iarity ol the symptoms manifested. Thewriter, nevertheless, confidently asserts that all the diseases named in this article Bn be and are constantly cured by the use of a potent alterative or blood purli'.er and l'vcr invigora:or. The active remedial properties of the most efficient agents now known of the above classes of medicines are scientifically combined in Dr. Tierce's Uolden Medical Descovery, which acs especially upon the liver, and th-on-h that organ upon the blood, cleansing and invigorating the sysUm generally. The (olden Medical Discovery 4loes not debilitate tbe liver by over stimulation, u-or irritate the stomach and bowels by disturbing ti e delicate processes of digestion, ncithcrdoes it act with severity upon the blood ; but it operates m) genily, insensibly, and yet with so much certainty and efficiency, that it excites the surprise and admiration of all who use it. If the bowels are unusually sluggish icbrouic constipation it is ad visable, in conjunction with the I'iscovery. to use l'teasant I'urgattve Pellet, wLkh are powerfully alterative, besides biiag m Id, gentle, and uuirritating. in their operation. They are the natural allies remedial assistants of the Discovery, and the two work harmoniously together. They should be taken in small dose, only one or two per day, and their use persevericgly followed until the bowels are properly regulated. . liilioo Attacks. People who are habitually subject to bilious attacks, bilious headache, sick headache, and loss of appetite, are pleased to lird that a course of the Discovery and Pellets furu'shes immunity from such onsets, and prevents their usual recurrence. Diseases of tbe liver are very fully consid ered iu the "Common Sense Medical Adviser," by II. V. Fierce, M. D., (over 1.000 pages, 300 illustra tions, bound in cloth1, price 11.50. pos'. paid. Medical authors describe about fifty varieties of j kin diseases, but as they all require ior their cure very similar treatment, it Is of no practical use to know just what name to apply to a certain form of skiu disease so you know how to cure it. We might describe various kinds of scrofulous sores, feversores, white swellings, enlarged glands, and ulcers, of varying appearance; we might describe how contagious blood poison may show itself in various forms of eruptions, ulcers, sore throat, bony tumors, etc., but as all these various appearing manifestations oi bad blood are caused by a uniform means, w e deem such a course unnecessary. Thoroughly cleanse the blood, which is the great fountain of lite, and good digestion, a fair skin, buoyant spirits, vital strength, and bodily health will be established. We have shown how the liver Is the great bloodlensingonaa of the system. .Set the great "hou-ekeper" of our health at work, and the Foul Poisons that accumulate in the blood, aud rot out, as it were, the machinery of life, are gradually expelled from the system. We have already shown that for tbis purpose Ir. Pierce"s Golden Medical Discovery apd Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Purgative Pellets are, par excellence, the articles needed. They eure every kind of humor, from the common pimple, blotch, or eruption, to the worst scroful. Great eating ulcers kindly heal under their mighty curative Influence. Virulent and contagious blood poison is robbed of its terrors, and by their persevcriBg and somewhat protracted use, the most tainted system may be completely renovated and built up anew. Tnuiori and Swellings dwindle away and disappear under the influence of the great resolvents. The system being pa under their influence for a few weeks, the skin becomes smooth, clear, soft, and velvety. Salt-Kheum Cured. Mrs. I- J. Diukle, of Bartgestown, Kas., writes: 'My daugatcr baa been cured of salt rbeam dt the use of Golden Medical Discovery."
