Telegraph, Telephone anil Electric Light Wire Blown Down in nil Part of the City Travel and Communication Very Mach Delayed. Nrw Toaa, Feb. 27. Folks who happened to meet the wind yesterday when it was humping itself for the eighty-four-mile mark, felt as if they had rnn up against a brick wall Eighty-four miles la hurricane speed and means a pressure of 420 pounds to man and more to woman, who car riea so much more sail for the hurricane to work en. It swept along and aeroea the streets and avenues In fierce gust, hurling showers oi dost and gravel in the (aces ot pedestrians: it whisked bats off heads and hurled them nndert he wheels i vehicles, to be crushed or cut to pieces; it propelled eaM-bound cross-town cars with such swiftness that drivers could stop them only by a vigorous application of tne brake; it pinned the drivers of west-bound -ars against the doors: it amebed glaxs in car windows, unhinged signs aiid shatters and snapped oil" poles: ferry boata were driven out of their courses and the light spars oi vessels in the harbor were broken. I nretarted across the desert oi City Hall lark, the gale madly cavorted and made eiretenee very lively for the people who pasted the corner oi Iark Kow aud i rank ort street. Ho fierce was the gale there that pederalian had to walk at an angle of forty-five degrtes to keep ixom Wing blown down. A woman was slammed gaiust a telegrapb pole in .front of eoeh's Motel and clung to it until a policeman rescued her. fco immense a quantity oi water was oiown out oi the harbor that at high tide lhe rivers had the appearance they have when ibe tide is unnsually low. At low water. :3V o'cloc last evening, the surface of the rivers was ten, hfleen and twenty leet from the top -of the piers and the brfages at the ferries ran down an angle of nearly forty-five degrees. A crowd oi passengeis in the Eighth avenue street car were surprised when they saw the roof of the car suddenly lifted off and sailing over into Central Park with the bell-punch attachment trailing behind. Telegraph, telephone and electric tight wires were blown down in all parts of the city. Messages were received by all telegraph companies in the city subjeet to two or three and many places four hours delay. Repairing the wires was rendered imtoselble. as the linemen were unable to stand up on the cross-arms of the poles. Adventurous people who crossed the Brooklyn budge on foot wished tbev bad not when they f ot about hallway over. They were seen by poicemen cliDglng desperately to the iron work to keep themselves from involuntarily following (Hi 1 urn. The bridge itself was transformed into hnge aeolia barr Ifhose thunderous musie euld be heard on the ferry boats that struggled below between shores. The Signal Service Observer had been inclined to think the gale would Jo down with the sun, bnt it kept up id the llveict sort of way, and at midnight seemed to be fiercer than ever. This was became the air was sharper by several degrees than It was at sundown, the mercury ranging thirteen degrees. The Signal Service man aid then the greatest force of the bliuard nad been exerted on this town. The maximum velocity of the wind at lkton was fifty-one miles, which is Just a little more than half as hard as it blew here. Tne only place that showed a wind record higher than this proud metropolis was Ml. tVshhiDgton, where it blew wu miles, lhe young prophet said we might expect colder weather and a more moderate wind to-day. Another cold wave is baUhing in the northwest Vt des-end upon us. The telegraph lines were reported badly crippled at midnight The constant main of the rale had weakened poles and insulators and the wires conti anally broke. Communication tetween New York and Sandy Hook and with other points along the Jersey coast were cut off. The Mues of yesterday were repeated to-day. No serious ai ciileuts are reported, but chimneys, swnings. sijrDs and tices continue to be Mown down. Kerry travel on the East and North Rivers is almost entirely suspended. The wind has Mown M much water out of the bay that the docks and ferry bridges are fifteen and twenty feet above the water. The ice is so packed by the wind on the Brooklyn side of the East River that a nuniter of boats are stuck fastand unable to get out of the pack. Nigger Ilead. in lie 11 Gate, was tntirciy expot-ed at low water this morning. So far as comfort is concerned to-day it is far orse than yesterday. The thermometer has Jalien to T- above zero, and the wind is blowing a vale at from fifty-one to fifty-six miles an hour. mit one sailing vessel has arrived here since night kefore fawt, and that required the amiatanc of two tng s- The bay is deserted ; no steamers have irrived, aitnongo a number are reported on the oast, unable to mase New lork harbor against t terrific gale whicb is blowing. Telegraphic ODDrttxm with the surrounding country is iu Even a worse condition than yesterday. I No wires are working to Dos ton or the East, and It is with great difficulty that anything can be releived from the outh. There is absolutely no ommanieation with points in the interior of this .rate. A number of bouses have been unroofed In this -city, but about the only people Injured have been unlucky pedestrians who vre blown against buildiDgs. A large nnmber of I ixb eases wer reported, the injured being somen in most eases. The chlng of hats has Veeome ncelefls, for wben they leave the head they o sailing over the house-tops into the suburbs, t batk-sa man shuffling along before the gale is let an uncommon aigbl.
