A special dispatch published here from the coke resrion near ConBellsville, To., speaking of the strike there, say 9 it is not in any sense a local juestion. "Whether a couple of thousand workingmen fball buy their brogans and bacon at company stores at the old rate o; wages, or get 1" per cent, more and buy where they please, eeema a matter of narrow eonse-juen-e, but when it is taken into account that this streak of black country, forty miles by perhaps three in extent, makes two-thirds ot all the coke ued in the United states, the importance of the controversy increases. Take the rrodnct of this small region last year, lo.il it on cars hitched together in a continuous train, the train running twelve miles an lour, to run uninterruptedly day and night, stand bede the track and watch the silver gray snake crawl by each hour, counting for 1,00J ton? of coke, and toward morning of the ninth day, when the forward end of the train is jolting down the sunset side of the Jiocky Mountains, the rear cars will be still within the clutch of the Pennsylvania police. Stretch the train straight across the continent aud the headlight of the locomotive will be flaihing its rays through the (ioldcu Gate, while the red ianips at the other en I are choking m the New Jersey .fog. Yet iTovane JlcCormick, one of the men -vfho made the tlrst coke burned on this continent, is still living, a poor man, but a respected Justice of the Peace. Three men made the ei fx rirnen frty-live years ago. John Taylor was a stone mason and owned a farm near onnellsville on which he worked a Tein of roal. Prora nee McCormick and James Campbell were the house cartienteTS cf the little town. Taylor built three ovens; the men jointly filled them with coal, borrowed a chunk from the blacksmithsbop and lit the fire that now blazes in "0kjO. The three pioneers lost on their speculation and the tew industry languished for several years. In ls.V) there were four coke works in the United State, small aßairs. Twenty years later there were only twenty-five. Now there are V0 with J:),.j7 ovens, of which the 14,285 in this, Connellsville region, where the thick vein of pure soft coal is better than any ether to make coke out of, roast 4,.sj."i;; ton a year. Scarcely any skilled labor is rexpaired in coke making," and so whenever in the flush times of f cofce the men rose tip with a demand for a bigger share of the profits their employers verwhelnieii'them with a Cood of Polish and Hunirarian cheap labor. Every J I ungarian abiding place at both Moorewood and Standard Coke Works will to-day be a castle. The Socialistic assemblies nave held a number of meetings to-day, hut their proceedings are jealously guarded. "Yesterday the stores were crowded with foreigners, preparing for the seige which they ex pect to open to-day. Long lines of men carrying bundles of provisions trudged homeward throngh the snow carrying the jrovender which 13 generally purchased by the females. On the operators' side there iava been numerous conclaves and private consultations. Thirty Hungarians fresh, from Castle Garden arrived at cJtoneville on Saturday evening with bundles, babies and women. They were not welcomed by any of the coke operators, but were soon ensconced under the shelter of the strikers at Moorewood, where they began studying the alpha bet of the A merican strike.
