The flame i trote out shortly before 1 a. m., and in a few hours nearly $X,000 worth of property ras destroyed. The water supply was inEnfcient and the weather was very cold. The hose wa9 frozen stiff, and the firemen were covered with ice. A fierce wind was b.owisg, and caused the flames to spread with gnat rapidity. At about 2 o'clock, when the fire was at its heijrhL. the bells of the Convent of Providence and those of the Church of Notre Dame de Pitts, adjoining the factory of Smith, Fischeln Co., tolled for assistance. The lire brigade realized the imminent danger to the church adjoining the factory, and with the help of the sjectators saved it from burning. The sanctuary of tbe church was illuminated with tapers and several of the sisters were praying at the altar. The buddings destroyed were owned by the Hotel l.en Nuns. The loss on thenTwill amount to $boO,jjO; fully insured. The losses of tiia occupants are not yet knOTvn, but will b3 cloie to I'JOO.om. The Mark Lane Express, In its review of the British grain trade during the past week, says: Despite the fact that there have been violent storms during the week, the wheat crops have a satisfactory appearance. Trade was cheerless and values are weaker. Pales of English wheat during the week were 57,648 quarters at 2 s 10d, against S.2S2 quarters at 4s 2i during tbe corresponding week of last year. Flour has been freely delivered and prices favor buyers. The market for foreign wheat is stagnant, Itusslan an 1 Indian selling freely at lowest rates. South Australia has for the first time an exportable surplus. The market for cargoes has been quiet and supplies small: two cargoes arrived; two cargoes were sol-l, one of which. No. 2 American red wiuter. at the supposed price of "k& 3d: three cargoes withdrawn and one remained. The trade forward was quiet. Several cargoes of California sold for prompt delivery at 35s 3du55s 61. At to-day's market wheat was unimproved, English being ttd lower. American flour was cbeater. Barley was dull. i IKDIANAPOLIS WHOLESALE MARKETS. Dry Goods. PKINTS. Windsor fancy 6 Pacitic fancy 6 Cooheco fancy 6 Merrimac fancy... Conestogn fancy... 5? 4 tierwick lancv. Kicbmond fancy. MARKETS BY TELEGRAPH. Produce Markets CHICAGO, Jan. 18. Wheat was unsettled and weak the greater part of the day and lower. At the opening the tone was such as to engender a reasonable expectation that it would follow the upward course of pork, but for some mysterious reason it delined to follow. Having been sold clown on tbe curb Saturday a low opening was naturally expected. Thus tirst sales were at Sjc for .Jay. the curb this morning having been anywhere from S3 tos5Je. Nearly all the regular local traders made a feint of bulling the market without doiDg any trading and under these ul healthy conditions, the price quickly dropped to 84? ic. F'or the best portion of an hour values fluctuated between ki'4'A söe for May, when, on a report that the visible supply to-morrow would show a decrease of only 7oo.o0 bushels, the market broke off to Sajc From here the decline to Ki'4c was quite stendv and rapid. Even at the lowest point offerings were very free and a good deal ol wheat changed hands. From S0J4C tbe market once more picked up to S4(aic on a moderate showing of hv il trading. Tousley was to-day adjudged insane and taken to the asylum this evening. Tousley's case is a sad one. On last Thursday he buried his four-nionths-old infant daughter his only child in a cemetery seven miles from here. Since then his mind has been wandering, and despite of the fact that he was closely attended he disappeared yesterday, and when found last night had walked from here to the newly-made grave, where he had dug out over two feet of the ground with the intention of exhuming the body. He had some coffee and bread "to feed the child," as he expressed it. After a stout resistance he was brought back to the city.
