Cleveland himself sever tosk much interest In politics when he was a young ma a. Mr. ßprsgne says that he caa not remember his ever laying anything abdüt it when he was in Favetteville. It was cot until he went to Buffalo tbat he tock the side of any political party. He never has bten at aoy time a partisan. "Wfcat kind of a bjy was Cleveland at tchoolT I asked tlr S or ague. "Was he a fighter in those days?'' "No, be was not. Yon couldn't gat him into a fight. He was the most peaceful fallow I ever saw. He would do anything in the world to keep out of a row. Thoäe who knew him ai a boy were very much surprised to see him develop so much backbone when he became Governor. He used to be to easy and yielding that any one could do what they pleased with him." Mr. Eprsgue continued. "Even in tho-:e days he showed great taste for business. Although he was considered very dull at school, he was one of the hardest workers In it, He was never very fond of play. H seemed to take more pleaiure in wors. Cleveland used to be very fond of coming over to our house about breakfast time. My mother was a great hand for buckwheat cakes in the morning. the history of other prominent men. 8 r Walter Bcott was regarded as one of the most stopld of boys at scboot The Doke of Wellington was a dullard la his -youth, while Goldsmith was considered to be not more than half-witted, the President has ao snr-' prised the politicians about him even more than his old-time friends, with the development of bis powers aa Executive. He is anxious to make a good administration, and believes that he will be renominated In the event of his giving a satlsfactary administration to the people. Governor Proctor Knott has been in the city for the last two or three days. I saw him upon the street the other morning and bad a brief talk with him. He looks more dignified since he has become Governor of Kentucky. He has more what the military would call "a set up" than he had when he was in Congres. Helsa man iust aboat medium height, with a round, stout figure. Hia head ia very large. His face is broad and smootn ebaven with tne exception ot a tnowy'.white mustache which sweepajdowa over bis mouth, completely hidiag it. Hie note is Komarj. Hia eyea are a clear b'ue, while hia forehead is broad and high. He has tha hih, clear eclor of a man ia perfect health, lie waa dressed in a very closifitting euit of black, made by one of the best of Eastern tailors. He wore npoa his head instead cf hia oM aof t slouch a silk hat of the latest style. He was aa correctly and neatly dreised as any New York club man. He shews a marked improvement in his personal appearance since he left Congress. Men can net serve in the House of Representatives for any length of time and keep their health or even any semblance of it. The chamber where the members meet is lull of poison and its atmosphere is responsible for the breaking down of many a public ooan. Mr. Randall's break down ia only one cf it any that are directly traceable to this badly ventilated room. I beard cf a peculiarity ot General Sherman's the other day which should be noted by thos who are to write his future history. The General ia very fond of good whisky. He used, hen he started out for the War Department, to stop at the bar just above Willard's Hotel for a morning drink. In Washington a single drink of whisky is fifteen cents; two drinks for a quarter. Van Vliet, when he was Quartermaster General, used to start out with Sherman at the same time, to that they could take their morning drink together. They lived next dxir to each other, and through this arrangement of starting out together they were able to save 2!.: cents upon each of their morning drinks. Sherman would pay one day, and Van Vliet another. Thf.re was always a dispute between them as to who should pay, each insisting that he had paid upon the day previous. Occasionally Sherman would come in alone, having müsed Van Vliet Then a funny little comedy would always ensue. The Geneial of the Army of the United States, after havicf; tossed off four or five fmgärs, would begin to fumble in his waistcoaL Then ha vooldsay, "1 have cnnged my waistcoat this morniusr. I have no cbangs." He would ray, ' Chalk it down and I will pay you tomorrow morning." The next day he would ronie in for his morning drink and put down a quarter In satisfaction of tne two drinks. The owner of the bar eaid that he wes sever able to get whisky at a low enough wholesale rate to get his money bock out of Sherman. Up near the War Department was another rectanrant. This was a military restaurant, cbiefly patronized by officers of the army and the officials of the War Ü3partment. General Sherman's luuci hera w&sa big drink of straight whisky. He wculd come over about 1 o'clock and call for his special bottle. He would pour out enough whitky to make two or thrae ordinary men drunk and would then lay down ten cents and walk out. He was the only patron cf the restaurant who got his drink for this price. The General of tne army uf6 to be just as economical in his smoking. He never would. buy cigars for his own U38 that cost more than SiöU a hundred. T. C. Crawford.
As article on "The Txesideatjand the Senate" the Si. Louis Republican concludes as follows: "The simple Democratic rule is the wisest, fairest and best to confirm all appointments cf a F.epublican President, exC??t where the appointee is especially objec tionable. Thi3 tu!e ia based upoa ihe prla i -V-fc m V L Si ' cipie mat wnen tne i resident is a iepu oilcan be has a right to Rspublican assistants and subordinates, and a Republican administration and Democrats have no alternative but to awatt their turn. The Republican Senate will do well to adopt the rule. Their party is out of power; the country is Democratic and has chosen a Democratlo President. This Democratic President is charged with the duty of executing the laws, and should be permitted to choose his own subordinates for the work." Se5atok Mahosz is said to be the ideal peker player of the generation. We thought that Mr. Schenck, of Ohio, ex-Minister to England under a portion of the recent Republican regime, enjoyed the reputation of being the poker player par excellence of this day and generation. Daring his residence at the English Court he wrote a bosk on poker and it was published with the cordial indorsement of the nobility. The only doabt that might be raited Iz the fact that Schenck ia a Republican, and it is said that Republicans don't play poker. It is only wicked Democrats that know much about the game. A cof.besiokdest writing from Washington on the li'.h says that Hon. Bayle Hanna on that day said to him: "I had an interview with the President yesterday and told him that my little daughter was eeriously iil and I feared the terrible trip to Persia would be more than she could stand. I asked the President to change my apoointsent to the Argentine Republic. He was very kind and intimated that he would gladly do to if the Secretary of State did not object. I subsequently saw the Säcretarv and te raid that he would talk to the President, and, if agreeable to him, the change would be mad." Many ladies who for y eara had icaresly ever enjoyed the luxury of feeling we'i, have been so renovated by the ue of Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, that th7 have triumphed over the ills flejh is said ti be heir to, and life has been crowned with added charms and fresher beauty. At Kingston, Mass., all tbe schools in th town were closed yesterday on account of the diphtheria prevalent among the pupils. There were four deaths Sunday, and more expected.
