A New, Tet Familiar Story The Oliver Bros, & Phillips Suspend Payments. PirrsEcae, Jan. 15. This afternoon Oliver Bros. & Phillips and the Oliver & Roberts Wire Company, limited, Issued the following card to their creditors: "We are to-day compelled to suspend payments and purpose calling Immediately a meeting of those interested, to whom we believe we can show assets amply sufficient, with some indulgence, to pay every dollar cf our liabilities." The report of the embarrassment of Oliver Bros. & Phillips, the greatest iron firm in the city, when all Its connections are con sidered, flew about like wild fire and set tbe town agog with excitement. Such an event was r cognized as ä catastrophe unequaled by any previous failure, and the great popularity of the individual Hiembers of the firm made it all the more to be deplored. The truth of the matter see me 1 to be that dull times, an immense pay-roll and other necessary expenses bave compelled the firm to ask for an extension, somewhat similar to that given to Grail, Bennett & Co , who failed two years ago. There are many stories afloat as to the immediate came of tbe tronbie, but in banks and on all sidei it med to be the general feeling that an extension would be ssked for and would b. granted by tbe creditors. It is impossible to gaes at the liabilities rf the firm. They are repirusd at fVom three to te nil? 1 one. Local bankers say that tli9 Is aivat aiaillioaorantfllioaaai a
