V - THE ATTEMPTED ASS AS1N.VTION OF CAPTAIN PHELAN, o'doovas r.dsea, in WHOSKornc thk occrBKEKCK TOOK PLACE. The story of Irish disaffection towards the Government of the United Kingdom develope incidents of exciting interest from time to time, not one of which exceeds in its sensational character the attempt to kill Captain Thomas Phelan, of Kansas City, by a Richard Short, professedly of New Ycrk. The event took place in the office of O'Donovan Rcssa, New York City, ia premises which are frequented by conspirators against the British Government and in which are written the blood curdling articles defending the Gse of dynamite or any other available means to injure the object of attack. The rropnetor of this historically inter esting oluce is one of the most extreme men in tl faction of which he is the area repre sent-live, lie has experienced tne eaTerit:es of the Lritish retribution, and makes ure of his security under tbe Stars and ßtrirea to earn a livelihood by the pnblication of a sheet which is at the head and front of Irish journals In its hatred of Ensland &Dd the ucscrupulousrif 6s of tbe measures it ad?ocate3 to promote the emanripa tion of the Emerald Lie from Bntui doixucation. Although the snows of nearly seventy winters had whitened his head and moustaches, he was as straight aa an arrow. He had the Roman features, tbe cashing gray eyes, and the ruddy complexion of Major George W. McLean and other veterans of the Old Guard. He held a Bilk hat in his left hand and his attire was faultless. A smaller man, made prematurely old by dissipation, stood at hia side. Iiis clothes were Bhabby, and he twirled his frosted moustache with tremulous fingers. His hollow eyes had a feverish luster, and there were deep lines in his face. His man ner was apm-ehensive, and he moistened his lips with his ton en e aa he pleaded with the white haired gentleman. "Judge," aaid the Roman-faced veteran in a courtly manner, I wish you would commit my son to tbe Island. He is a hopeless drunkard. It is my only hope for his reformation." "Father, oh, father! exclaimed tbe man at his side, in accents of grief, "cot this time not this time! Please give me one more chance." Ihere were tears in his eye?. The eld man was as immovable as a statue. He kept his eyea fixed on the Judge. In terms cold and aimofct pitiless he urged the Judge to send his son to the workhouse. "Don't listen to him, Judge," said the younger man. "He don't mean it oh, I'm sure be don't mean iL Father doesn't know what he Is saying." "lie quiet," said the Judge. "We will bear yoa in due searan. Old age most have the preference. Gray hairs must ba respected." In Bet terms the stern veteran eain urged the punishment of his son. He had evidently steeled his nerves before entering court, and be w s aa firm a rock. Not for an irstant however, would he trust his eves to look on his son. Though deaf to his entreaty, the eight of his boy's mUery might soften hia heart. "Are yoa thia gentleman's son?" asked Judge DuSy of the younger man. He is my father. Judge," was the reply after the feverish lips had again been moistened. "How old are you?" the Judze inquired. "Forly-three years," was the almost inaudible answer. "Forty-three years!" exclaimed the Judze In a tone of surprise. ' Is it possible? Dissipation has made yoa prematurely old. You are older in appearance than your father." Then turning to the fatner, he asked: "For bow loni a time do you want yocr eon committed?" The o'd man was stone. He had not taken bis eyes fron the Judge. "For one year," he replied in an impassive tone "Oh. father," broie la the son in a thin, tremulous voice. "For God's sake don't crake it a year. Give me three months. I'll try and be eatisSed .with three not more. Please, Judge." tarniog to the benh aopealingly, "mate it three months. Here's Mr. IJanelrre here," pointing to a gentleman rwmblirtg Bn Franklin, who stood in the background, "he'll say a good word for me." The father was obdurate. The son plaaded so strenuously that even the heart of the Judge was touched. "I might make it nine months," he ssid, with an observant look at the old man. "Twelve months," said the old man, despite the sobbing of the degraded son. ' Father, th son cried, "not twelve. If yon ever loved me. Make it six. Oh, JaJe, make it six months. I'll take six months willingly, but not trelye." "It is the Judge's duty to fix tbe term of Imprisonment." the Poiice Justice sternly said. "Yoa must remember that. I give you both five months, and it you bet ave yourseii I'll let you 03 ceiore mat time." "Thank, you. Judge." the younger roan sobbed. i on hare treated me better than I deserved." He tarred toward his father, but tbe Iron- , willed parent bad abandoned bio, and was
walk Irg from the court room as stiff as a ramrod. The commitment was made out, ard the cfGcers took tbe eon Into the prison. Five minutes afterward the unforgiving father etcod in the corridor of the downtown elevated station at Eighth street weeping as though hia heart would break. NATIONAL AND) STATE: LEGISLATION.

A Legislative Coruiuiuee to Investi rate the Cauae of the Strike 4ssiitaat Adjatint General Olli Oai He turned and Made Uts Report. CoLOiitcs, Cf., Jan. 1C The Senate to-day adopted the House joint resolution for the appointment of a Legislative Committee to investigate the condition of affairs in the Hocking Valley, and to make a report by February 15. 'ihe rewl ution makes inquiry as to the cau39 of the strike. Reports from the Hocking Valley thia evemng are that mysterious movements are going oi among the miners, between one viliege and another, and a general feeling of nceasinees prevails. Assitant Adjutant General Dill returned to-day from mating a visit among the miners of Straitsville, Nelaonvile and along the Sunday Creez branch of the Hocking Valley Railway. He reports Monday and Sunday Creeks on a rampage, the water spreading over the valleys, and thicks this will prevent an outbreak for several days; and also ventures the opinion that the action of the Legislature, in authorizing an official investigation may have restraining influences. Colonel Dill reported his investigations to tbe Governor and Adjutant General Finley th's evening, but tbey refuse to divn ge anythin?, bet an impression prevails that a small force of troops will be stationedjat Straitsville to prevent trouble.
