E Chnrch, was present, and invoked the divine blesbin? upon the body and the work which it shall be called npon to per fniu. Following the invocation, the roll of members was called, and those not hold ing over were called and sworn in by Jddge Ho k, of the Banreaie Bench, A. J. Kell v. for Frincipal Secretary; II. C. HaffBtettcr, for Assistant Secre'ary, and Joseph W. Cope, for Doorkeeper, were then elected in the foregoing order by a strict party vote, 32 to 16, and were duly iworn in. A committee was then appointed to notify the House that the Senate had or ganized by electing . the foregoing otneers, and was ready ti proceed with bosinesi. A number of bills were Introdaced, and among them one by Senator Foulke, wnich ia eseentia'.Iy a civil service nuasare. It provides for the reulntiou sod improvement of the civil service of the Slate of Indiana, by a Commission of three persons appointed by the Governor (the Senate approving) from the two political parties casting the largest number of votes, who sba'l hold no other office and whose actnal traveling expends shall be paid, together with a salary of $3 pr day. Their duties shall be to supervise all cooa petitive examinations and gire particular attention to the enforcement of the civil service law. The bill a'so authorizes the employment ol a b'pecial Examiner at $1,500 per annum, and a Secretary at $1,000 and expenses. An effort was made to adjourn till 11 o'clock to day, but was defeated. The House met at 10 o'clock and was called to order by Hon. W. R. Myer. Secretary of State. He announced that Kev. Dr. All-it won'.d lead ia prayer, aid all the me i .bera arose to their ft et. After the prsyer by Dr. Abritt the mcntera were called up and formally sworn in. minations for Speaker were then called fcr, icd Hon. Samuel v . Williaan. ol Kqox County, rressnted the name of H "n. The roll call resulted in the election of Mr. Jewett by a vote of 05 to 33. Hon. D 8. Goodiu?, of U&ncocf, and Uua. liuga Afcilnllen. of Dearborn, were appointed a committee to escort the newly elected Speaker to the chair. Mr. Jewett said that he ajsumed the sta tion to which the partiality of the members urd elected him with sincere gratitude and ith a profound sen?e of the responsibilities which it involved. In all the history of the rotate ro House bs ever been richer in abil ity end real wort-u He would not safest Itgbl&tion, tor that was the province of the G overs or; he would not suggest the kind of l.'gulauon, lor that waa to be lert to the House, but it would not be impertinent in him to speak of the manner in which legis lation should be made. He pointed out the bad effect of waiting till near the close o! the session to rasa laws when there wsa a rush ot busi ness. He said thut no law should be passed without careful consideration. The time allotted by law is sufficient in which, to transact all the business of the sessionand be expressed the hope that it would be im proved without delaying till the last days of the session. Every hoar, he said, should be Utilized. He referred to the fact that the Escple had a risht to consult with the memBra in privat or to address them publicly by petition, but be warned them against suca measures as were pnsnea mtn penistocc and pertinacity, and urged that they should re cd ember on such occasions that they were the servants of tbe whole people of the S:ate. He did not expect that party questions would disturb the session, and he trusted that unanimity and good feeling would pre vail in all the deliberations of trn body. The Speaker was loudly applauded ai he clofed his remarks. The organization of the House was then completed by the election of the following o itcers: uierk, M. u. Darneu, oi rutnam; Assistant Clerk, Joseph F. Fanning, of Marion; Doorkeeper, Henry Ii. Fry, of Grant. The Republicans put in nomination for the reroectiv offices D. R. Rest, of Steuben ; D. A. Ranger, of Vermillion, and Alexander Bayman, o! Kosciusko. The vo eon each waa a strict party vote 65 to 35. As toon as the officers were sworn in several members were on the floor with resolutions, and under their provisions committees were appointed on rules, to secure commit tee rooms, and to wait npon the Governor and notify him that the House had organized. A resolution that the Doorkeeper invite the e'erev of the city to conduct the re ligious services of the House led to considerable riucostion, and this daty was finally placed npon ttie boetker. ine naut bill, appropriating $125,000 for the expenses of the Legislature, was introdaced, read, the rules suspended and passed. A committee consisting ot three members wa3 appointed to secure a hall and superintend the inang' nration ceremonies. Hon. J. U. Gordon, ot Putnam, said that it was known to every patriotic citizen that the day was the anniversary of a great victory in our history, and he therefore moved that the House adjourn till 10 o'clock this morning in honor of the dietinguiehed patriot who won the New Orleans victory. The members, thouch honoring the distinguished victor, did notte cause to adjourn at that time, and the motion to adjourn was laid upon the table. No tics waa received that the Senate had organized, ana a committee was appointed to wait upon that body and notify it cf the ereanization ot the House. At 12 o'clock the House took a recess till 2 p.m. A MARVELOUS STORY OF THE SEA. A Farmer Kidnaped and Taken to Port Blco His Remarkable Experience. Philadelphia Bpeclahl Farmer James Drookson left his home at ßuitleton, Pa., having with him $4'J0, on November 2. to come to this city. From that time until last Monday nothing was heard of him. Aa he had talked of a trip to Chicago hia family concluded that he bad gone there. Inquiries were made, and when it was found that he had not called on relatives in Chi caro his wife finally believed that he was dead. On Monday evening last he walked into hia house. He was in a dazed condition and seemed to be under the influence of some stcrjefylcg drug. A physician was sum moned to attend him. All day Tuesday he was delirious and spoke of strange sights and frequently referred to the sea. on Wednesday he was better, and told the story of hia alleged adventures during hia absence from home. While traveling toward fhiiadelthia he spoke to a quiet-looking man who occupied the adjoining seat. He proved to be Ifaac Edson. captain or a schooner en gaged in the Bonth American trade. Brookion remarked that Porto Rico was a place he would very much to viatt. Captain Ed-

Victoria Morostnl Explains How Ernest Captured Her Affections. Notwithstanding the fact that volumes have been written and published about the fa rut us Morotini elopement case and various exDlauati'ins made as to how the lady became infatuated with her father's coachman, tbe real facts were never brought to light until they were obtained by a reporter here from Mrs. Schilling hereelf, savs a Dos to a tslegram to the New York World. The story is a remarkable one. Mra. Schilling, in reply to Questions on the subject, eaid: "iron ctiildhood op It has beea my pleasure to roam at wi J through the forest which surrounded my home. Hiding, too, was a preat enjoyment to me, not because Ernest drove, fur then I bed no interest in him. One day I went to ride on the road that winds alone the banks of the beautiful Haason river. From cne point on that roal the ruins of an eld atone mansion are visible. It stands on the top of a hill at considerable distance from tbe road to the right. I had often wished to go nearer to the moss-gron walla, but had always ben deterred by tome member of the family beirg with me, cr el3e tbe sin marked "Dangerous!" which was nailed t j a tit in front of it. Cut thin day I was alone and determined. Ernest drove, and, not withstanding bis entreaty, I spraig oat of the carriage, and wa soon peering into th ereat entrance of the old ruio. Arinng myteit with a stick 1 pushed aside the vines and ere e per b that overhung the opea door, and stood within the great hallway, whica WB8 iiiied with poisonous undergrowth. The interior presented tuch a wti and gloomy 8spect that I vaa almost oa the point of ranniDg away. Had I done bo, Victoria &!orosim would never have married Ernest Schilling. Being that day imbued with a spirit of adventure. I mounted to the top of a flight ot stone steps, where I found a nar row hallway leading into a large room at the bacs. I started to traverse teat hall, bat on taking three or four Eteps forward there was bcAbo. I felt mjsaif falling Nllin;? and then I became unconscious. When I re paired my senses, some days later, I was l3ic in bed at my father's h jase, surrounded by anxious friends and relatives, and Ernest (who hai rescaed m crashed and bleeding, from beneath the wrecked floor) stood over me with a white face. They were await ing the doctor's decision as to mv chances for life. I bad lingered for days, wasting slowly. "It is a serious wound," said the physician; "she has suffered great loss of blood, ana x predict ner aeatn witntn an hour unless one chance alone remains for her! it ia a blood transfusion." All this I heard him say without being able ta open my eyelids or Bpeak a word. Thea there was another pause. Not oae of them nmed. Then Ernest Schillings stepped forward, and without a moment's hesitation he bared hia Etioag right ana and said, calmly, yet, ob, so determinedly: "Take from my veins the last d rep ol blood Hit will save ner Hie." The blood was transfused from Emert's arm to mine. He saved my life, for I grew strong almost immediately. Then there arose an intutive attachment between ua. How could I resist loving the man to whom I owed my life and who was pleading for that love the beiag whose life-blood coursed through my veins, warming me back to life? It was a great debt 1 owed him, and one which I have cheerfully paid if, indeed, the poor recompense ol my willing nana coma pay tu He says it has. Our vows at least are indis soluble. It ia a bond of love between us that is fixed, unaltered, unalterable. Had I a thousand years of life I'd live it all with him. And now you know wny victoria Moroeini wedded with Ernest 8c hillin 3. IIb, Hirekbt, of Muckroes, who has now been a resident of New York for man months, and Beams to havetakea a fancy for this country, has let hia beaatiful forest, overlooking the celebrated Killarney Lakes, to Mr. Amphlett, who, judging from the accounts in the Irish papers, ia having royal s;ort there. Forty Btag3 and nearly 1200 k oodcocks were brought down ia a day. The O' Conn ell family have also a fine forut near.
