Chicago, Dec. 20. On 'Change the iwcnlative markets have been acÜTe and feverish daring the pait week, with Yalaes very irregular. Wheat started with the "Dears" in the lead. The break of the previous week and their long successes had seemingly created the belief that the market bad no bottom. They sold freely right and left, any option and in any Bi'zed los. Many of the weak and timid "longs" also became frightened and joined in helping along the break by throwing over their little loads. Wheat appeared completely demoralized, and the big "bet ib" talked confidently of 00 cent before tbe week was oat. Many of the "bulls," too, became converted to this bauet when 70 cents was reached, and IVacon" Ilobbs, GeoTe Bacen, Bing?, and J. T. Lester, were the heaviest aellsrs, seemingly being anxious only t J get ont and stop their Josses. This resulted ia a further sag of January reaching Ouc, tbe lowest point touched in yean. Here, however, the bear rale ended. Big baying orders came in, and the scalpers concluded reaction ought to be iu order. Ia bo time the sentiment of the pit was completely changed, and the crowd were scrambling over each other to get back the stair whica they had been so eager to dispose of a short time before. Values climbed back so fast that many of the "bhorts" who wanted to teke profits could not even-up quick enough to save themselves from loss, while the hulls, wbo had unloaded at the bottom, looked disheartened. Bayer, however, were Might-weight?" and by the time a gain of lJa-3 was recorded they were ready to realize. This again caused an easier feeling and made the bilge oppear like a soda water attiir after all. Still the most vigorom hammering, aided by a panicky stock market in Ne v York and rumored fail area in this conntry and across the water, has not been able to work prices down much. Advices from the Northwest tell of decreased wheat acreage and a probable heavy falling olTin farmers' deliveries. Cables, too, are stronz and stocks at the seaboard small. Here the feeling may be Baid to be generally bullish, and while those favoring higher prices have already lost too mnch to take hold on any larse scale now, the bears are not nearly so reckless in their operations. No outside orders are received and a quiet business is predicted until after January 1. Year corn started with a little brotn. bat it was eaid the majority of the shorts settled, and it is thought the squeeze is over, although there is some talk that the screws will be put on again after Christmas. Distant options are about steady. It looks as though farmers were determined not to sell their corn at present prices, and in this they are encouraged by the press and public. Speculators, on the other hand, seem equally determined not to bid np prices until they are compelled to, and therefore the market drags along, without any decided tone or activity. There is almost a superstitions fear on the part of traders o being left with high-priced corn on their hands, and at very advance they hasten to unload as fast as they can before the expected decline seta in. Trading In provisions has been light, and principally of a local sealping character. Packer have sold to some extent against tbe'r productions, but there are no new featurti in the market. IKew York Correspondent Philadelphia IiecorJ.1 The Sun on Tuesday printed what is called "Horsce Greeley's ImlI Words," and give them a sort of diabolical heading in the anneied line: "Tbe Manly Utterances of a rroud. Brave Heart' Every newspaper rran knows tbat Horace Greeley did not write a lire of that bitter, backbiting editorial which appeared in his paper November, 7, 1872, just after his defeat, and which insulted every friend be ever had. Oa the contrary, he indignantly resented it, and went down to his oihce and wrote a denial of its authorship, coupled with a statement of his real opiniou. It did not appear in the paper, and for three consecutive mornings it failed to appear, though each time it was specially ordered in by Mr. Greeley. At last he called for his old foreman, T-m Hooker, and said: "Tom, how is this? Why des not my article appear?" "Because," said Rorker, "Mr. Reid has given orders that nothing you may write shall go in the pauer without his approval." "Is this the decision of tha directors, too?" aked Greeley. "I am sorry to ray," said Rooker, ' that it is fo " Tears came to the o'd man's eyes. Hernse, reached ont his hand, said, "gwdby, Tom," and left his ctlice, never to enter it again. Tbe rest of the ttory is sad enouh. He went to a friend's houce. wai hustled frcm there against his pleadings and entreaties to a lutatic asylum, where he soon beat out his foor head against tbe birs. There were friends who sought for him everywhere, bit in vain friends who wjuid have taken him to their homes, and cured him of his temporary trouble, but the brokenhearted old man was kept ia concealment until he died. The entire story ol the tragedy has not yet been written. Sjme day, for the take of justice, its sad and terrible details ought to be given to tbe public. Give Them a Chance, if the thousands and tens of thousands of weak and weary sulTerers throughout tbe land, who, in spite of care and skill, are steadily drifting downward, could have the benefit of that singularly Vitalizing Treatment DOW 80 widely dispensed by Drs. Starkey & Palen, of 1,109 Girard street, Thi'adelphia, the help, and ease, and comfort it would bring to wasting bodies and depressed spirits would be blessings beyond price. If, rtader, yon have an invalid wife, or mother, or daughter, or sister, or any one who is ander your rare or dependent upon you, and to whom life hss become a burden through weakness and pain, consider seriously whether you are not bound, in both love and dity, to give this sufferer a chance of recovery, cr, at least, the blessing of ease from pain. You are offered the amplest means of information in regard to this new Treatmei.t. If vou can examine testimony without prejudice, and can weigh evidence with judgment and discrimination, write to Drs. biarkey V Palen for such proofs in documents and reports of cases as will enable you to fairly examine and decide for yourself. They will be promotly supplied. Wbtr After Hla Retirement. Ben; Tcrley Toore in Boston Budget.) Daniel Webster continued to pass nil winters at Washington after he left the Department of State, attending to his large practice before the Supreme Court. He had been coldly received on his return to Massachusetts, after having been the recognized premier of John Tyler's administration, and he spoke to a friend with some bitterness of some of the "solid men of Boston" as "sixtyday fellows, with their three days' grace.1' In his mind's eye he doubtless saw some cf them wondering whether certain promissory notes upon which they had put their names would be paid by him or by them. Nor would he admit that, because of the pecuniary aid given him, be was modestly to retire into the lear rank, and let a wealthy cottonspinner stand foremost among the Whigs of Mafsachusetts. Tb mct important case conducted by Mr. Webster was an action brought by the beirs of Stephen Girard, to recover his bequest for the establishment and maintenance cf a college. Mr. Webster tosk the broad grourd that the plan of education at the Girard College was derogatory to the Christian religion, contrary to sound morals aud subversive of law. He spoke for three days, but he could not answer the arguments of Messrs. Bmney and Sergeant, tbe ablest lawyers of Philadelphia, who defended the bequest and trained tbe f uit. Mr. Justice Story, in delivering the opinion of theCanrt, said that the cat-e had been "argued with great learning and ability." It cures fever and ague. This will be glad news to the thousands of tuff ere rs from thtte distressing maladies, operating with greater certainty than quinine. Mlehler's Herb Bitters does not leave behind it any of the unpleasant and even dangerous consequences which frequently follow the use of that long considered specific for diseases of the malarial order. Dr. W. H. Frank, of Cbesteryille, Mo., need it with great success in the case of a patient who was thought to be beyond cure. Two cases of the successful joining of divided nerves have been reported to the Paris Academy of Sciences, function being restored in one case to a nerve which had been divided lor fifteen years. Prurgista in malarial districts say that Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is as much the standard remedy for female weaknesses as qainine is for the prevailing chills and fever.
