THE GERMANS SOLID.
Important Action of the Connecticut Fort se britts Band. Delegates representing the various branches c! the Connecticut Fortschritts Band or German Progressive union in the State met in onvenuga at New Haven on Monday. The SüCtiTg was ä sped;! one called for the purpose ol discussing the Presidential tickets in the field and deciding which of them should receive the support cf the organization. About 100 delegates attended the day's convention. President William Griesinger, of Bridgeport, made the address of welcome. lie said : AVe do not assemble for any mercenary motives as tools of a political machine, bat as representatives of Germcn citizens of Connecticut, who only have in view the honor and welfare of their country. Ihe rroceedinc-s resulted in the drawing no ol a statement' of the voters, and especially the German voters of the State, which was unanimously adopted. The address, by way ct introduction, institutes a comparison letwecn the criuciples and tendencies of the two great parties, which is rr.x ra r an arraignment u organization. Therefore all voters are. Tfea Jack Kuife Trade I'olicy of Mr. Calkiu. IFxtrtrt from Judge Jordan's recent speech at J'ooiessVil;e.J Judce Jordan said. I Und in Mr. Calkins' opening speech at Ilichmond, the following tentence: "There should be such a division of labor as that this country could consume the entire product of the farm and field." This sentence I respectfully refer to the tbe thirteen thousand school teachers of Indiana, ard ask them to pass judgment upon its construction. Cut let the farmers of this State consider the policy advocated in the senter.ee. Mr. Calkins proposes that tha mechanics and fermers shall grow pro3perous and rich by selling to each other. The farmer is to ab.tndon the loreign market and pell to the mechanic, and the mechanics sell to the farmer. In other words, they are to "swop" jack knives, to grow rich by the transaction. Has ilr. Calkins ever examined the statistics to see how much of the prod acts of oar farm and fields is sold to foreign countries? Let me give you the amount of exports of just four of our products of the farm and lield lor the year 155.J. reexported Brctd and EreadstuSg , i0S,0JO,S50 Cotton...... ........ Provisions...-. . Totacco. - .... -JI7.3Ä.721 ... 107,S-8,2S7 .... 21.0-JV-2J Mails e töSI.8W.CS7 Bnt tbe folly of this policy advocated by the Kepublican candidate for Governor becomes more apparent when we consider the enormous excess of export over imports for tbe last eight years. The excess lias amounted to the enormous sura of $1,307,22y,27C; and this was largely made up by the products of tbe farm and tield. I take these figures from a book compiled by the Finance Committee of the United States Senate good Republican authority. Co you know that in the last few months our exportation of wheat fell off ?14,(KX),0X). This immediately affected the money market of New York and turned the stream of gold from our shores. A clo?e money market in New York caused one of our bank failures in Indianapolis. Yoa are now Belling your wheat for seventy-rive and eighty cent. Bat how much do you suppose it will bring if tbe policy of Mr. Calkins and the Republican party is adopted and the entire product sold at home? You would be fortunate to get twenty-five cents rer bushel. SAND COVERED WITH GOLD. A Bold Effort to Sniudle the Harth in Atlanta. Atlanta, ",., Special: A weil-drescd, good-lookintr man, ol about thirty yeais of ape, attempted la swindle Allan u banks to-day. During the morning he entered eveiy bank in the city and exhibited to the cisaier a bag containing what he c'a iaed to be cold duxt and upon which he aked for a lon. It had the appearance of gold and its bUik indicated that its value might be $100 or more, but nowhere could he find accommodation. About noon, havin ben to allot the other bsnko, he entered the Atlanta National D ink. and. abowinc the dust to Mr. Paul Rounw, askol for a loan cl $600, sayin that he needed tüat amonat badly, ilr. Komare eiamlned the dust aud then told the trenser that if Dr. Hop would five hiTi at certitlca'e that it was gold he could get tne money. The uranrrer picked Tip tne ba? and, poing direct to It. Hope's plac stited the case to Mm and assel him to examine tbe dust. Dr. Dope gave it a hurried examination an t told the man that he taoaht it was good for S009. Tni3 was what the stranger wanted, aud, picking up his sack of dust, he went back to the bank and repeated to V r. F.omare what Dr. Uope had said. Mr. Romare, fortunr tely, was not satisfied with the statement, and luforrned the sirarg?r that he would have to secure Dr. Hope's writtea statement Themsn then returned to Dr. Hope's offlee und, explaining the matter, asked for a written statement. This request induced Dr. Hope to make a closer examination, ile took 'from the rack one or two particles of the dust and began scraping it with a knife, but as he did so, the stranger picked up the sack and pat it in hu pocket. Dr. Hope then turned to get some acid, but as be did to the man ran out. The acid showed that the dnt was not gold, and a further examination drrelopeo the fact tnat it was sand covered with gold. plandid Results." This is the decided affirmation of a gentleman in Tray, N. Y., after a month's trial of Compound Oxygen in his family. Trie ereat improvement in his wife's condition is very remarkable indeed. "My wife had much soreness in her lunqs, and a constant depressed feel in e, as if a weight were laid upoa them. We had just hnried a daughter who bad been nearly a year sick with consumption, and constant rare of her produced these injurious results. 1 felt much worried in consequence. Four days' use of tbe Treatment and the appetite began to mend. Two weeks, and she felt like a different person. The soreness has almost entirely disappeared, and she can breathe deeper now than she has been able to do for years, goes out in all weather, and is able to do an amount of 'Christmas shoprirp that is very trying to my pocket-book. Besides my wife, other member of the family have used it as a general tonic, with splendid results." Our "Treatise on Compound Oxygen" containing a bistory of the discovery and mode cf action of this retnarttable curative &;ent, and a large record of surprising cures in consumption, catarrh, neuralgia, bronchitis, Mthrna, etc , and a wide range of chronic liseases will be sent free. London, Au. 1L The Mark Lane Express, in 11b weekly review of the corn trade, says: The intense, dry and tropical heat has prevailed slaeo AnguH 1. The harvest work proceeded rapidly, and the grain matured ia an exceptionally goad form. All the earliest wheats are now in perfect miliinz condition. Barley and oa'.s vary. In some distiicts they ar. excellent, in others poor, spring beans appear to be an absolute failure. The potato crop is unlikely to prove large, but will be freer from disease than for msny years. Throughout the past week new wheats have made their appearance in various market, iu a condition described as somewhat phenomenal. New wheats are quoted at C6s 4d ior reds, and 4Cs ior wo lies per quarter. Sales of English wheat during the week LM.,768 quarters at STs Cd, asaiust i",l;?l quarters at 4".s 6d for the corresponding week of last year. Trade in foreign wheats was choed by siiDshinc, r nd tbe preent symptoms indicate a ispid subsidence of values to a level hitherto unVuown. The present position of the trade will fctrenihen the argument of thope who claim that the production tt wheat throughout tbe world in late years his tccn incrcetlD' in a ratio exceeding the ratio of onmniption. Wheat In London and Liverpool is irregularly cheaper. O&ts. Cd lower. MaUc, firmly held in Ltulon. Barley remains un changed. Trade in cargoes off the coast has literally dried up under the blazing sunshine. INTERESTING TEST MADE BY THE GOVERNMENT CSE5IIST. Dr. Edward G. Love, the present analytical Chemist for the Government, has recently made seme interesting experiments as to the comparative value of baking powders. Dr. Love's tests were made to determine what brands are the most economical to use, and as their capacity lies in their leavening power, tests were directed solely to ascertain the vai'able gas cf each powder. Dr. Love's report gives the following:
Name of the Baking Powders: "Kcyal" (absolutely p;-re) 'Talapsco," alum powder 'Rumford's," phosphate, fresh . "Rumford's," phosphate, old . "Hanford's None Such," fre?h . 'Hanford's None Such," old . 'Redhead's" "Charm," alum powder 11 Amazon," alum powder "Cleveland's," short weight oz uSea Foam" ''Czar "Dr. Price's" "Snow Flake," Grcff's, St. Tad "Lewis's" Condensed ''Congress" veast ''PearF .... ,4C E. Andrews & Co's" contains alum "Hecker's" "GLUei's" .... "Bulk" . ...
In his report, the Government Chemist says: "I regard all alum powders as very unwholesome. Phosphite and Tartaric Acid powders liberate their gas too freely in process of biking, cr under varying climatic changes suffer deterioration." Dr. H. A. Mott, the former Government Chemist, after a careful and elaborate examination of the various Baking Powders of commerce, reported to the Government in favor cf the Roj'al brand.
