A great sensation has keen canned in the quiet town of "Winthrop, lvotn Harbor, by the discovery, a day or tw4iiice, of the skeleton of a British olftcer who was attached to acraiser daring the Kevelutionary War, and lost bis life while iu command of a cutter's crew and a detail of marines pent oat to intercept and rapture a party of Marblehead fishermen, who were proceeding to their homes after having laid in a supply of irovisions, etc. at Boetcn. Mr. John Belcher and other old relative" of IViclhrop possess cotes and papers written oca after and giving details of the officer's death. Yo many years it a been known that the body was buried thereabouts, and the locality has ken examined time and again, but the exact place of interment remained a mystery mil now. The discovery was made b'j workmen engaged in excavating fur a cellar n the estate of 1. Howard Woed, at SunnyKde, a part of the town which lies ophite Apple Island The men had reached a depth of lour feet when they suddenly laid bare the feet of the skeleton. A further examination, however, revealed the fact that the body laid in such a position tnat the rest of the Vkeleton was interred directly beneath a high tone wall, which had afterward been tailtoverit Work was temporarily pu-pen-ie!. and after a consultation with the proprietor it was decided to let the skeleton xeu.ain where it was, rather than fro to the txinsc of removing the stone wall. Rev. T. twlee, of the Methodist Church, howev r, attively interested himself in the matter, aid received permission to continue Ute work. lie accordingly engaged Mr. Mayo, a retired sea Captain, and Mr. John Wadsworth, an Id fisherman, to proceed with the work of exhumation. They removed the wall, and, after a few Lours' farther labor, succeeded is unearthing the entire frame. It was found xocliaiog on u thick plank at a depth of between tltme and four feet. The soil in which it was buried was a soft, damp blue clay, which amounts for the excellent state of preservation in which the remains were found. The skeleton was that of a maa over rix feet in dieight, the jaw bones being very mastiive and, the rest of the limbs in proportion. The bone held well together. Around the waht was an otlicer's belt, from which was suspended, by a small chain, an empty rabbard, while the neck was encircled by the regulation fttock then in vogue anion; the British marines. The waist belt was orna-ient-l with bras buttons, upon which wau engraved th .British crown. The belt and stock were well preserved, as was also the . rouicb plank on -which the skeleton lay when discovered. The story of the officer's death, v as gleaned from notes made at the time, and from other sources. waa as follows: During ithe summer fallowing the evacaation of Bos- : kn by the British, the party of Marblehead Jtehcrinen above alluded to dropped into Boston hrborl4r the purpose of replenishing tktir .mpplios Wore starting for home after . their long crnis. They .numbered twelve 7?n and occupied -three . smacks or barges, - jv? they were then caUed. .Having obtained tWeir supplies they put about and started for their homes, which was situated on the coadt some eightec miles to the northward, fome time after they hid started, and just as they were going through Point bhirley Gut, a lew miles Wlow th city, they, were observed by jl Britiali gunboat that was cruising around, and iinruediately a. utter was lowared from the tide of the gunboat, and on after a party of .sailors and marines started in pursuit of the hardy fishermen. The latter crowded on all sail. And endea red to get out of th way, but it became apparent that escape was impossible, so they lowered their saiis and calmly awaited their pcrsuers. The Litter, upon cbserving this, set up a shout of triumph and bore 4own upon what they deemed an eay prey, but the p'acky fishormeu had made preparations to receive tb British, and -when the fticer in, command stood up in the stern of bis boat asd ordered the Americans to surrender, a mocking laugh was sent back across the water and was followed by a .'bunt f IIa rue aad a .vitlley which filled two of the ma.vines and eue sailor. The British replied, and tor a few minutes a lively tiring was kept up on Lcth aides. fiua-ly, when the bc&is closed, by a skillful use of boat hooks a ud other weapons, the fishermen succeeded in capsizing the light cutter of their opponents and throwing them inta the water, whidu runs with great volocity at that point. Soise.of the men sank immedwHly, while others endeavored to board the fishing a mack", but were beaten oil and drowned. The fisiaarrnen crowded on all sail again and escaped Noting the mishap to his men the oAicer in-eonimand-tff the gunboat ordered away the second cutter to pick up the survivors. Kwne were onnd alive, but the bodies of all were recovered have one. thai of the oilioeir of the cutter who had ordered the surrender A few days afterward, bowever. Lis body wan thrown up on the beach of what is now Winthrop, where it wai discovered and interred by txnue of the inhabitants; and now, after the Lapse of more than a century, it is again brought to light by the . descendants of those who buried it there generations ago. It i.4 understood that the British GcTernment will be no i tied of the discovery in order Hut the officer's identity may be established, and the remains eent bock to England, if his relatives scdeeire. Senate wlllVloptany tarifl bill that is pa3?d by the House, even if it makes a radical change in the present tariff. lu giving his reasons fo that conclusion be states that fck-nator Ingalls is in favor of a decided change and against the protection theory; that tSenator l'lumb, who was last year held ly the party Caucus against any decided chanjre, will not bo hell in support ef protection this year, but favor a change to a tariff for revenue, and that one of the Iowa Senators will be found on the same side. This makes three Republican Senators who will le found against tbe Ilei-ublican protects n theories, and who will favor even radical changes. This ht believes to be sufficient to ir sure the passage in the Senate of any tariff ohanees that may be adopted by tbe llotrse, and for that reason predicts important changes during the reason.
