TERRIBLE TRAGEDY. A Xardcr, o SnitMde an! an Aerd;ital Pull rart'.CTilarB of tu Dreadful Affair, TOtib the Cu8 That Led Tl;rjlo. One ol the mott terrible tragedies that was ever enacted in this city occurred about noon
Ttesday, and resulted in the deaths of Jacob Alteuburgpr and Jacob Buib, and tbe Jaugerous if not fatal wonndins: of Samuel I Campbell, a disinter 'cl bystander. The awful deed forms another fink in the chain of murder and suicide which has disgraced tbe citv enrals end rent a thrill of horror throughout the length and breadth of this community. Tue stcry ci tbe affair, as gleaned from eye-witnesses, is substantially ea follows: Just at Docn Tuerjday Jacob Ilxsh, who baa been attached for some tiro 9 to the law office of Frank M. Wri'ht, in the Parker liloci, fronting cn Court street, near Deliware, was engaged with Z. K. McCorrnicfc in a game Of checkers when Jacob Afterburner i cane into the tuca ?.na ma isu emerea mio nversation. As they both spoke in Ger man Mr. JIcCurMick co'.ld not understand all they said, but ho deaaei enough to ! knew that they were talking abo-it a damage j Bait thai Lai leca filed bj V,-,h against Altenburper, ard which would come up for j trial ne-vt week. Lush appeared auxioas to aroid a conversation with Alteaburger, and. tboigh be Lad ju-t entered upon the game with JlcCormick, he aroi,e and started out, with the remark that ha tau3t ko to d'nner. lie was followed out of thaoiKse by Altcnburrrer, and the two started in a weite rly direction. Hash walking in advance. Tiie tto xaen had proceeded but a fev steps when Altenbarger drew a pisto! and presented it j at E'JiL At this time the men were not more thaneigator (ea ftti ap8rt,aoJ Altenbarer hesitated so lorn; about llriit- tbat an eye-wit- ! nesa supposed he was tot going to shoot at j all. Suddenly, however, the report of a pis- j tel was heard, and Bath fell to the ground and ttre np his hand in a deprecating niaaner. Another shot was hred, and Altenbnrjer 8trted ecr&ss the street. At tie did bo, seme one called out, 'Arrest that man!" Jost at this time he was seen to place tae pistol t J the rieht side of bi3 bead and rr.aae two or thiee inetTctual attempts to lire. Lowering ' the pUtuI, he crocsed the afreet and entere I ! the mi all yard in the rear of Kaho's dry goods store, where he mada another et! art at i elf destruction. At tnis time tne pistol was i dischareed, the ball entering his heal just i above the nib. ear, ana paisicjr. directly through the skull to the opposite side, lodge! under the skin, and was afterward extracted. Alttnbnrper fell to tbe ground, and Iiis j brains llowins out formed a larpe pool upon J thejrround. He was taken to Kregflo s, where j be lived in an unconscious condition until tbortly after 1 o'clock. Jacob Hush, his vietim, was carried into "Weight's Gliice immediately after th shootint? and a phyrican called to attend hiru. When the latter arrived it was plain that Uuih'g wound ttz mortal, and that nothing cccM be done to alleviate his suilinrjOT. i The wcunded man was in the reitest irguish, both of body and mind, and fra- i inentry appeard to mos stan.nc around to kail i'trn and ihzi ena au sirin reaeo a rrqne&f, that ?ome one would eo for hie daughter, tut this had fcaiuiy beea done before he breathed his Ia?t. Aa erami nation of the bo-Jv showed that the ball Lad entered the back rear the fifth vertebra and hSv passed entirely through. The bodv was taken to the unMertatir s: establisurneit of S. ('. Wßrner, where a largo crowd ) htd af enabled to see the reanius aal Lear the oft-repealed story of the tragady. i tarauel ampoeil was coaoiinoatoi fat- : terson'a livry sble when the shooting os- J ccrred. and a strav ball hit him in the lefi eide near the reKio uf the heart. It is sail ' by S. C. Varnr, who witEes?ed t':e sioo'.mg. ; that the ball which rassed through tne boly of ilr. Hush was the one that hit Cinob3ll. i A thf iUinl wa onlv a. Smith .V' Wfw.vi I thirty two cal-'ber, it sceiii3 hirdly possible that it could Bend a ball wiih sacn force. Another theory is that Altebur-;r'a first !?hct mie-J Hush, and the latter fell to the pround from frisht only, but this does no, appear reasonable. Tbe shootin&r caused tbe wildest excite ment, and larre crowds rat he red at the seem and at the undertaker '9, where the remain were taken. The po'.ici were ea-ly on hand axd did all in their tower t kep bick the I crowd and Rive the immediate friends of the parties a chance to pee them. All kinds of reports were in circulation daring the day, but the following acaounk of the causes hcicq ieu 10 me Enooung is renaoie in every 1 I particular: 'SiiUIRF.
