The attention of a representative of the Sentinel waa called yesterday afternoon to Hon. Mr. Jayhawker'a mind developments regarding the condition of the lands belonging to the State of Indiana- Those who know Hon. Mr. Jayhawker are possibly aware that be ia always deeply concerned about the way things are managed in this gainsaying world, where- the llesh and the devil wrestle continually for the mastery in human "'lYirs. pirticalarly in fiusncial matters. It is rumored that when Hon. Mr. Jaybawker linds things going wrong, to an extent that melancholy cornea on, ha hies himself away to some secluded dell and soliloquizes: "Truth cmhe1 to earth ehall rise again : The eternal years of God are hers." And such like enthusing and inspiring thoughts of poets and philanthropists, until his mind is compo3ed, and then he again goes forth on hia mission to brine men to the knowledge of the (rut h. Those who know Hon. Mr. Jayhawker best never tire of extolling his devotion to veracity. The eternal verities are his itrorghoM. Just now Le has struck the question of finances, and the way he is going ahead is likely to end in a calamity to him as eeriooaas that which happened to a New York mule. The hybrid broke its back by trying to scratch its tail with its ear. Jayhawker, if he is the attorney of the State House contractors, if he is jrorking in their interest, if he has set about the work of influencing Governor Porter to call an extra session of the Legislature, thculd. with his accustomed frankness and freedom from dissimulation, tell His Excellency jast what he is driving at, and, as he is on the most intimate (emu with the Govenor, he may have alicidy done what we suggest. Hon. Mr. Jaybawker may bo deeply concerned for the safety of the States funds. A gentleman of his acknowledged publie spirit and devotion to the welfare of the ßepublican party would naturally be considering the iiuaiicial situation. That is what gave Mr. Jay llubbell and ex Senator 8. W. Dorsey the largest part of their burnished fame. 'Hon. Mr. Jay hawker not only champions fruf.-'i, hut he worships with eqnal devotion at the shrine of law. He loves statutes with all the warnt th of his poetic nature, and is as devoted to them as wjs Miched Ange'.o to statues. Hon. Mr. Jayhawker in his communication to the Cincinnati Enigma in a n ay tackles His Excellency, Governor Porter. In fact he makes charge against hia Excellency. A representative of the Sentinel called upon Governor Forter in his office to learn how seriously he was affected by the charges. It was thought possible that the explosion of Hon. Mr. Jayhawker's dynamite had injured His Excellency, or came Jamnigh.iL Such was not the cse. Every charge had been a Hash in the pin, and when the attention of the Governor was called to the plot to destroy him from of; the face of the earth, to annihilate hira, to politically decapitate him he laughed heartily. One by one the charges wer disposed of taken out of the office on i hips, as it were, and sent where thy could be decpntly interred. Governor Porter, to charge No. jt remarked that he was a email stockholder in the Indiana National Pank, and was not aware that if had ever held one dollar of the State funds. He had had nothing to do with the management of the bank, aside from a desire to see its business management in the hands of safe men. The truthfulness of Hon. Mr. Jayhawker after that, looked less rosy. Then came charge Xo. ... about Mr. Treasurer Hill having $ltj,X0 with Frank Kennedy of the collapsed Central Bank. Tnis charge could no more stand alone thin Henri Watterson's "brass-hooped pigcin" ;i(ter the hoops had taken their departure. It was ind-'gnantly denied. Governor Tor er neve heard of such a tUing. As a champion trurf.tdUr it must be confessed that Hoa. Mr. Jaybawker tegn to look very mach like a Colorado grasshopper after it had beenciresseo by a Kansas cyclone. Now here comes charges six and seven as follows: ". Tfcatf.overaor Porter has, ever tinee he has een ia oif.re. ignored and refused to obey the ?lear pnvUion cf Use- law which mt lt It hU duty to have the TanPs of the Treasury made absolutely turvlar ard tire-proof. 7. Tbat t.ovtmor Porter has dec.lne.1, lathe faced all Hi Informs 'ion and reports which ha 7 been current, to the effort mat tae money of the Kta.e waa bein? loaned, to order an Investigation cf the T:ta?urr. As a matter of course Governor Forter never heard in his life from any source that he was bound to ret pect; never once from any business man in the community that anything wrong was being done with the iuuds ot the sj;ate, and had never declined to lo his full duty ia the matter of the titate'a finance?. Such statements from the Governor completely upset Hon. Mr. Jayhawker'a charges as printed in the Cincinnati Enigma. The Governor referred particularly to the pafe lee pin;? of the funds of the State, and Faid rac-ht ercphatically that the 8tate iocs not possess a safb place for the ieepirg of large amounts of public funds. He referred to the law passed a quarter of a century ego. asd to tte action in the matter uy Governors, from Governor Morton to himself. The prerent safe of the State is neither fire proof nor burglar proof, and if it were both, thn funds would itill be unsafe in it unless it should be .constantly guarded. Jlence Governor 1'orter waa emphatic in hia declaration that Treasurer of State Cooper has the right to place the funds of the State where he believes them to be safe. Governor Porter raid he would not be governed in his action relating to such matters by any partisan spirit whatever. Illustrious men had preceded him in the oitice of Goternor. Their term of service was nearer the time when the laws relating to the subject of building a fire-proof and burglar-proof safe was enacted, but that he was now giving the subject attention. Here we have it tbat Hon. Mr. Jayhawker'a tornado 13 scarcely a tempest in a tea-pot, and. viewed from any standpoint, la not worth considering seriously. It would be weil for this community to know if Hon. Mr. Jaybawker is working in the interest of the State House contractors. It might be well enough to inquire if be now or at any previous time in Li) history could be influenced by a money
cor,c.eration to attack the Dfmocratic party? Ruch u qulrtes mayneem a littleout of plae, but it is we'l enough for Democrats to ua-

It will be remembered by readers of. the Sentinel tbat this paper, in the issue of Sunday, tt ade mention of a certain death bed confession havir g been made in the Foreman trapedy. It row comes to light that the alleged cfnfe.ion wa published last Friday in the weekly Modern Era, of Brownsburgb, Hendricks County. The pretended confeseion was eaid to have been made to one Kev. John Some r et, cf C ermont. The confessor etated that he bad oommitted the bloaty deed under the impression that he was to receive a large reward. The reward, of which tte C0Lfrs?or says he has never received a cent, was löoo in money, and was offered by an unknowu man from this city. The conspiracy, the confession also alleges, was made in a certain saloon in Fayette. The day af er the plans for the murder had been arrar ged the two consDirators remained in a Eojalton toloon until late in ths afternoon, wl.en they re i aired to the Foreman farm, when the ' death bd man," after leavirg the Indianapolis man Ivint; in the wojds, went up to the nougft and killed the two old ladies. On all of the above named property mortgages were execu ed prior to the assignments, and placed in the hands of a receiver. Mrs. Morrison executed a mortgage which covered the Tinker estate legacy. Oa the records it is also shown that a mortgage we$ executed ar.diiled on the 13trj as security for a promissory note for $11 5)'J,dated arch 10. 1'. and payable to the ordar of 0. C. Guy. This mcrtgsge embraces part of lot 12, square ", and is understood t j caver her interest in the Morrison block. Morriton, Mrs. Davis and J. V. Murphy. The former's matden nime was Tinker. The Trustees were directed in the Tinker will to loen $25,000, which was to bs paid to Captain Tiuker's son. YY. H. Morrison borrowed this money without security. To its raJn3ent n attempted to apply a portion cf his life insurance, bat there was a failure to make an assignment. Then Mrs Morrison assumed the legacy, and on it begsn paying interest. Before the mortgipes were filed yesterday raker, Hord & Hendirk received instruc tions to secure this legacy. The mo ttges were prepated, and not receiving any advice relative to the Tinker bequest, sent them out for execution tefore they had been examined. A question then arose as to whether the legacy or the other mortgsge had precedence. The matter being broaght before Judge Walker yesterday for settlement, he issued an order making the one in the hen a of the Keceiver subject to the other. A genilemau who is well acquainted with all the deuils of the circumstances is credited with ssying when speaking of Mrs. Mor.dson, that she inherited from the Tinker enate forty acres of land, which Mrs. Morrison afterward sold at not less than $23 per front foot The estate was indebted to her fully IJOO.OCO, and for this indebtedness aha had a prior claim against other creditors. Abut two years apo, however, she was induced to invest $1,OCO as a partner in the Indiana Banking Company, and her liability as a partner involves every dollar of which she may be possessed. It was reported on the street tbat financial transactions took place at the Indiana Banking Company on the 0:h after business hours which depleted the cash assets $30,1S4, and in addition a promissory note for $13,500 was renewed for one year, without an indoreer. The hearing of the petition of Mary Morrison and others vs. William Needham and others, which was set for a hearing yesterday, came up before Judge Walker. It was established that Mr. Landers, the receiver appointed by the Court Last w eek, was a depositor In the bank to the extent of $$00. Under the law, it waa held, Mr. Landers was die qualified for the position, and in the afternoon William Wallace waa appointed to tbe petition.
