Lfttcr No. 14 la the Fisheic. Fct-lle berit. Hot Prntertlon Works tn 9BXCo6ir,' Xrarinpshtr, ad Liverpool, Ohio Oasa-jiari-on of Wag In Knglaad ad America. ! The KwiJ lfo ?rNTox J. rir.ii Tte Fourth of Ju'y dispatches front the Tillage of 8 unhook, N.U., "Were edfjing. The ewners of certain infant Industries in the villnzeof Sarawak have tc cer-tly imported by tie InmanLine of etearcers several hundred Swedes, who are described in the dispatches as ' pacpers and Jailbirds." These "panpers and Jailbirds" were brought to this -country to take the pkcc of the American workmen for whose protection certain tariff laws have been enacted. These "psxpfTS and Jailbirds' sniffy mg the Fourth cf July breeze?, and not con--1tnt with tbe 7ry low wages paid, 'them by the owners cl the highly protected industries, be-jan to leave the vil lage Sanceo. turning their face westward. Wben, lö: their taskmasters seized them, kept them imprisoned and drove them to their wcra as black men were driven to the cane and cotton Eel Ja before the War. Ej Ecme means word reached tbe Swedish Minister at VTashinton, and he has been icj&iiicg by what authority his countrymen were treated in this fashion, and the explication is gi ventral the "paupers and Jailbi'ds"' bought more food and clothing than their wages enabled them to pay for, and that their imprisonment was a ready method adopted by the protected manufacturers to protea- the xillags ttorokeepers who had been selling poods to tbe "caapes and Jailbirds." When jon go to Washington in December yon will probably hearSsnator Morrill argua that the cwrers f the "Sancook infant industries need more protection, so that American laborers shall not be reduced to starvation wages by corn tition with foreign pauper labor." Another interesting fact has co.ne to light. The town of Liverpool, O., is the teat of a great crockery-ware industrj-. By the recent law you raised the tariff on the articles nade there. The increase was demanded atd granted In behalf of American woikcien. The owners of the crcckery industry et Liverpool have adopted a method cf dealing with their diasatisiied employes which is said to work well. Their labcrar are required to rent tenements owned by the mcncpCiy, which are occupied as loop as the wc-ikmtn remain in the employ of the propi ietor. When the workmen asi for higher majres they are promptly ejected from the tenements to make room for cheaper workmen. Ho, when it was settled that tue tiritf wor.l.! be increased, the patriotic owners of tbe iiriected industry disc harped their American workmen, drove them from their homes, and supplied their places with cheap foreign laborers imported for the purpose. TLe protectionists are opposed to theories, b&t ere hunpry lor facts. Let them chew this Snnccok and Liverpool bnsinev. It tuTvta to illustrate the patriotism of the monopolists who clamor for protection in the name of "The American System," and is worth thinking about by statesmen who allow themselves to be humbugged by false preteases. Supcse it should turn out to be the 'act, after ail, that in the principal protected industries of this country our workmen get less pay for the same work than is paid to workman in tbe tame indnstries in free trade Enelecd. I quote from the published adire .f Mr. Thcn.as G. Shearman, delivered at l-etrolt in Junelast, the following: "According to the returns published by Mr. Secretary Fielioghuyseu, the average animal wmcs c f ai! men. women and children employe! in Eng!ih cotton mills arefi.l, tbey woriins only fitty mx hours a week. The annual average w.tges cl ice lice class cf work people is oar American cctton mills were in ouly SJti they working an average of at least '.xty-rive hours a week. As their aces were reduc-ed -0 par cent. lou aj (tDce .-A) tie result is lütt iui:i.s me last year tbe cotton operatives in America have tx-u working feisty-ve hours a wea: for Si-1") a year, whiie the cotton peraiives in England have leea workin? ODly f:y-six hours a week for JJil a yer. Thus in cne oi tbe largest arid mofct hiirhJy pr tected manufactures in this country tie rats of wages is 22 per cent, lower than in L" -inland, tae hour oi labor are Is pet cent. longer, au 1 the cjst cf living is JO per cent, nore." The special reports of llr. Secretary Ev-!3 in !"', and of Mr. Secretary Blaine in 11 show that in nearly every department of industry in America, workmen get less wa?M for a given amount f work thau Enzlhh workmen clo. Our workmen work more hours, work faster, and darin a year will produce nearly double what an English workman produces. Mr. Shearman says: Tbe census showa that tbe average production of American workmen la l.vso was Jl.'.o per nead, wtllo like average production of Easllsh worameu was only tTSO yr neal. Wai?efi are not on an average 25 per cent, higher here than In EovUnl, and tüerfoie American Ubor producing 10J ptT rnL ia. re U practically at ieast ö3 per cent, cheaper than Krglish. Now, when American workmen come to understand that tarilf laws are prepared to increase proilts only, and that all talk about naying them increased waives is in tne face cf the facts, and is simply for the parposa of catching their votes, they will kick as vigorously as the Iowa farmer who objected to beirg taxed to support an ostrich farm, or to drain a swamp on Siunk Creek for the col ture of rioe. W. P. Fishback. TUK CROPS. A Gen rat Uaprovement In the Condition of Cotton, Wheat, Corn and Oata. "WABHisGTcx, Jnly 10. The July report to the Deprrtment of Agriculture indicates a very general improvement in the condition of cotton. Rains were general up to the 15th or 2Cth of June, and local showers have been frequent since. There has been an excess of xnoifitare interfering with the cultivation and promoting the growth of grass. Clear fields axe found only in favored districts and on lands of prompt and peeing cultivators. Since Jane 20 the growth has been rapid. In the trassy districts the plants are still small, bnt healthy, and making great progress with recent cultivation. The only complaint brought comes from Central and Southwestern Texas, frem the Colorado to the Ooadalcnpe. A few Counties in South Carolina and Georgia report present need f rain. The recent distribution of moisture has been quite unequal. Adams, Connty, Mise., has had shower daily for five weeke, and Tike County for six to eight weeks. The general average condition has advanced from to 90. Last July there was an f mprovement of three points from KJ to12. Returns of July since 1870 have indicated a b'"yher condition than in Jane, except in 'tl, '.Z and '7fJ. Sprin? weather wai too variable in temperature and moisture, as it usually ha been in former years, for th highest condition of the plant. The only ! leuopraae is reported lor Arkansas, where a less of three points was made from exessjive rain, cool nights and injuries from chinch fcnps, red ants and rsst. The Farmer, in review, in its issue to-morrow, will publish an exhaustive report on the condition of the crope. based on returns from 1 000 points in the West and Northwest. A general change for the better in all crop prospects hss tasen place in the last two weeks, owing to the cessation of rains and advent of hot weather. Last week the two combined served to bring forward late corn and push on spring wheat and oas. The weather has been very fine for eaily winter wheat. The harvest and crops is now );oing into steck. Spring wheat and cat crops are unusually promising, aad are both now rearly axsured. 1 is believed the corn croi ia rapidly coming up to its condition in 1.S2. In ISetter UeMlth Tnau for Many Years." A celebrated Church trial was had in the N( b!e County Circuit Court last term with regard to the use of a Church erected some years ago on the Uaw Patch by money donated to the cause from ail denominations, and it was sgreed tbat all orthodox creeds should be given privilege to use iL Recently the Disciple minister from Ligonier made an appointment to preach in the Haw Patch Church, but was refused admittance on tbe ground that bis Church was not orthodox. Eminent divines were called to the defense on both sides, by their testimony, while legal gentlemen of fame were engaged to explain the theological points. The Jury decided the Dieciple Church to be orthodox; so then the Ligonier parties entered suit to obtain a right to me the Church, which case is yet pending. The Commissioners jt K oeci us ko County are making arrangements to compel the draining of Nine Mile Lake. This move will greatly afTct the summer resorts in that vicinity, as well as the villaye of Syracuse, and a lively remonstrance can well be expected from the parties interee tad. The difficulty will no doubt be settled in the Courts. Conaamption Cared.
