I hear a knocking Ja tie south eatry! Hark! more knocking! Shakespeare. Knaricane Hall is a large old family hi Minor, Di.t of dark, red sandstone, in one of ;he lonelii it and wildest of the mountain regions of Virginia TLe etUte is surrounded on three sides by marge of steep, gray recks, spiked with clan J of dark evergreens, and called, from i:s husefbee form, the Devil's Hoof. On the fourth tide the ground gradually de; cf rids in broken rock and barren soil to the dga of the wild mountain stream known as t r e lievil'a Ran. When storms and flood 1 were high, the loud roaring of the wind through the wild mountain gorges, and the terriac raging of the torrent over its rocky course, gare to this ravage locality its ill-omened names of Devil's Hoof, Devil's Kun, and Hurricane Hall. Major Ira "Warfield, the lonelv proprietor cf the Hall, was a veteran officer, who, in ciiigust at what he supposed to be ill-requited services, had retired from public life to spend the evening of his vigorous ags on 1 his t'.a patrimonial estate. Ueie he lived in seclusion, with his old-fashioned housekeeper, Mrs. Condiment, and his old finally servants, and his f tvorite dog and horses. In witib Major WarSeld was tall and J.trorgly teilt, jike acme iron-limbed Douglas cf the olden tirue. Tb re ws, however, other ground of aversion I eside that of h.'s arrogant mind, violent umj r nd doniiceeriug iihii. Old HurriCSne was said to te an oid bachelor, yet rumor wh'apered that thre wasiasDme otitcui pjit of t.'. wi ild, Liden away iroru liumaa sight, a deserted wife arid (tilrt. four, forlcrn. and harttirtkn. It was further whispered that tbe oider bi other of Ira Wartield had ru' steriouaiy ti'.-a prared, and not without icnie itifplcion of foul play on the part of the only person in the world who had a strong int.: eat in h.s "taking oil " However these thirds might be, it was known for a certainty that oM Unrricine had an only si star, widowd, sick and rwvr, who. with her son. diagged on a wretched ifecf ill-requited toil, eele privation, and painful infirmity, in a distant city, unaided, unsought and ancared for by ber ctnel brother. It was the n:ght of tbe last day of October, eightt en hutdred and forty-fire. The evening had closed in dark and gloomy. About dufk the wind arose In the northwest, driving up masses of leaden-haed clouds, and in a few mine tea tbe ground was cover i deep with snow, and the air was tilled with driving ileet. As this was All Hallow Eve, the dreadal inclemency of the weather did not prevent the negroes of Hurricane Hall from availing themselves of their caprioonj old master's permission, and going IT in a body to a ranjo break-down held in the quarters of their next neighbor. l'pon thiä evening, then, there was left at ihe halt only Major Warfield, Mrs. Condimi nt, his little old housekeeper, and 'Wool, hi- body tervant Karly in the evening the old house was shut up closely to keep out as much as possible the Bound of the storm that roared through the mountain chasms, and cannonaded the walls aa if determined to fores an en trace. As soon as she bad seen that all was safe, Mrs. Condiment went to bed and to aleep. It was about 10 o'clock that night that Old Hurricane, wrapped np in his quilted lannel dressing-gown, sat in his padded arm-chair before a warm and bright fire, taking his ease in his own bedroom. This was the hour of the coziest enjoyment to the self-indulgent Sybarite. And, indeed, every means and appliance of bodily comfort was at hand. Strong oaken shutters, and thick, heavy curtains at the windows, kept out every draft of air, and so deadened the sound of the wind that its subdued moaning was just sufficient to remind one of the stormy weather without in contrast to tbe bright warmth within. Old Hurricane, as I mid, tat well wrapped up in his wadded dressing-gown, reclining In his padded easy-chair, with his head thrown back and his feet upon the fire irons, toastirg his shins and sipping bis puncl. On his left band stood his cozy bed3ta', with its warm crimson cut tains festooned back, revealing the luxurious awell of the fall feather bed. and pillows with their enow white linen and larubswool blankets inviting repose. Detwen this bdtesd and the corner of ihs fire pi tee stood Old Ilurricann's ancient body-servant. Wool, engaged in warming acrimioa cloth nieht cap. "I take this," said Old Hurricane, as he sipped his panch and smacked his lips "I take this to be the very quintessence ot human enjoyment fitting here in my soft, warm chi ir before the tire, toasting my legs, sippirg my purcb, listening on the one hand to the storm without, and glancing on the other htnd at my comfortable bed waiting there to receive my r leipy bead. "I wonder now if there is anything on the face cf the earth that would tempt m to leave my ccsy li: eside and go abroad tonight? I wonder bow large a promise of pleat nre or profit or glory it would take now?" "Much as ebber Congress itse'f ouli eive if it give yr u a penance for all your sarvins," augrested WooL "Yes, acd more! for I wouldn't reave my heme C'ruforts to-night to insure not only tbe pension but the thanks of Congress," f aid the old man, replenishing his glass with attaining punch, and drinking it off leisurely. Tbe clock struck eleven. The old man again filled his glass, and, while aipping its contents, said: You may fill the warming pan and warm my bed. Wool. The fume of this fragrant punch are beginning to rise to my head and make me tleepy." The servant filled the warming-pan with flowing embers, shut down the lid, and thrust it between the sheets to heat the -couch of the luzurioua Old Hurricat.. The eld man continued to toast his feet, sip his purch and smack his lips. He finished his glass, tet it down, and was just in the act of -Jrawirg on his woolen night-cap preparatory to ttepping into his well-warmed bed, when be was suddenly startled by a loud ringing of 1 be ball-door bell. "What the foul Cend can that mean at this time cf Light?" exclaimed Oid Hurricane, dioppicg his night-cap. and turning sharply around toward Wool, who, warming-pan in band, atrxd staring with astonishment 'What doe that mean, I sskou?"' "'Deed, I dunno, aar, leas it's some be

nighted trabbeller in search o shelter out'n de storm." ' Humph! and in search of supper, too, of cocre, and everybody gone away or gone to bed but you and me." At this rjcoment the ringing was followed by a lend knocking. "Msrre, den't le's yon and rael'sten to it, ard then we alnt 'bliced to aturb ourselves w'd nsarerirgrf it," suggested Wool. What. tit', do jou think that I am going to turn a draf ear to a 6t ranger that comes ti my houfe for theltcr on bucü a Light as thia? Go and answer the bell directly." Yn.iar." "lint step look 'here mind I am not to be disturbed. H it is a traveler, tsk him in; st refreshments before him, show him to bf d. I'm not goirg to leave my warm room to welcome anybody to-night, please the Lcrd. Do you bear?'5 "Yea tar," sa'd the darkey retreating. As Won took at haded taper and opened 'Le doer leading from his roaster's chamber, the wind was heerd howling through the lorg passages ready to burst" into the cozy bedioom. "Suvr mi nooR. you scoundrel !" roared Old Hurricane, folding the skirt of his warm dreeing gown across his knees, and-hovering elfter to the fire. "Wool nuicklv obeyed and was heard re

treating down the steps. "Whew!" said the old man, spreading his bands over the b!aze with a look of comfort able appreciation. "What would induce ; to go abroad on auch a night as this? Winds blowing g'eat guns from the northwest snow falling fa&t from the heavens, and rising just as fait before the wind from the ground! cold as Lapland, dark as Erebus! No telling the earth from the sky. Whew!" and to comfort the cold thought, Old Hurricane poured out another gla&a of smoking I nnrh and began to sip iL "How I thank tbe Lord that I am not a doctor! If 1 were a doctor now, the sound of tbat tell at this hour cf the night would frighten me: I should think some old woman bed been taken with the pleurisy, and wanted me to get np and go out in the stcrm to turn out of my warm bed to ride ten miles through the snow to prescribe for her. A doctor never can feel sure, even in the worst of weathers, of a good night's rest. Lot, thank Heaven, I am free from all suck annoyances, and if I am sure of anything in this world it is of my comfortable sleep," said Old Hurricane, aa be sipped his punch, smacked bis lips and tcasted his feet. At this moment Wool reappeared. "Shct the door, votr villais! Do yoa intend to Btnd there holding it open on me all eight?" vociferated the old man. Wcol hastily closed the offauding portals, and hurried to his master's side. Well, sir, who was it rang tbe bell?" ' l'eae, niarstr r. sir, it wer' de Keberend Mr. Parson Goodwin." Goodwin? "Sar' sar! siop r, if you leaxe'J cried Wool, going after Lim. "Why, wtat does the old fool mean?-' exclaimed Old Hurricane, angrily. "Sar, de JUverend Mr. Parson Goodwin say bow be meat see jou your3e'f, personable, alone." See me, you villain! Didn't you tell him thst I bad retired?" Yes, marfe, I tell hint how you wer' gone to bed and asleep more'n an hour ago, and be oidtrtd me to come wake you up, and say Low it were a matter o' life and death." "Life and death ! What have I to do with life and death? Ivron'tstii! If the parson wants to Me roe he will have to come np here!" eiclaimetl Old Hcrrlcane, suiting tbe ection to the word by jumping into bed and drawing all the comforteis and blankets up around his bead and shoulders. "Mus I fetch Ma reberence up sar?" "Ye. I wouldn't get np and go down to see Washington. Shut the door, you raecal, or I'll throw the boot jock at your wooden head !" Wool obeyed with alacrity, and in time to escape tie thre&tened missile. After an absence of a few minutes he was heard returning, attending upon the footSteps Of another. And the next minute he entered, ushericg in Kev. Mr. Goodwin, the parish minister of St. Mary's. "How do yon do? How do you do? Glad to see you, sir! glad to see you, though obliged to receive you in bed! Fact, is I caught a cold with this severe change of weather, and took a warm negus and got to bed to sweat it off. You'll excuse me! Wo 1, draw that 'easy-chair up to my bedside for worthy Mr. Goodwin, and bring him a glass of warm negus. It will do him good after his cold ride." "I thank you. Major Warfield. I will take the teat, bat not tbe negus, if you please, tcr night" "Xot the negns? Oh. come now. you are joking. Wfcy. it will keep yoa from catching cold, and be a most comfortable nightcap, ditosing you te sleep and sweat like a raby. of course you spend the night with us'."' "I thank you, no. I must take tbe road apain in a few minutes." "Take the road again to-night! Why, man alive, it is midnight, and the snow driving like all Lapland." "Sir. I am sorry to re fue yonr proffared hospitality, and leave your comfortable roof to-mght, and sorrier still to have to take you with me," said the pst r. gravely. "Take me with you! No. no, my eo3d sir no. no, that is too great a j oke ha! ha !'' "Sir, I fear tbat you will rind it a very serious cne! Your ervant told you that my errand was one of imminent urgency?" "Yep, something like life and death M "Exactly. Down in the cabin near the Punch Bowl ther- 's an old woman dying " 'Tbere! I knew it. I was just saying there miht be an old woman dving. But. my dear tir. v hat's that to ine?- What can I do? ' 'Ihmanity, sir, would prompt you." "Bn, my dear sir, how can I help her? I am ota pnyncim to precrioe." ' She i tar past a physician's h pip." "N'or am I a priest to hoar her ocfessicn " Her confsion God has already received." "Well. I am cot a lawyer to draw up her mill." No, sir; but yon were recently appointed ore et the Jatiices cf the Peace for Aliegien?" "Yes. Will, what of tbat? Tbatdo-snot ceruprie tbe duty of getting up out of my vaitn bed and g)iog through a snew atorin to tee an old woman expire." "1 regret to inconvenience you, sir; but in this instance your duty demands your attendarc at tbe bedside of this dying woman" "I tell yoa I can't go. and won't. Anything in reason I'll do. Anything I can send she shall have. Here! Wool, look in my breeches pocket, and take out my purre and hand it to me. And then go and wake up Mrs. Condiment, and ask her to till a large basket full of everything a poor dying woman may want, and yoa ahall carry it." "Spare your pains, ai r. The poor woman is already past all earthly, selfish wants. She only asks your presence at her dying bed." "But I can't go! I! The idea of turning out ot my warm bed and exposing myself to a snow-storm this time of night!" "Kit-use me for insisting, sir; but this is an crucial duty," said the parson, mildly but firmly. ."I'll I'll throw up my commission tomorrow!" growled the old man. "To-morrow yoa may do that; but meanwhile, to-night, being still in the commission of the peace, you are bound to get up and go with me to this woman's bedside." "And what the demon is wanted of me there'."' "To receive her dying deposition." "To receive a dying deposition! Good Heaven! wasshe murdered, then?" exclaimed

the old man. In alarm, as he started out of bed and began to draw on his nether garments. "Be composed she was not murdered," raid the (astor. "Well, then, what is it? Dying deposition? It most concern a crime!" exclaimed tha old man, hastily drawing on his c at. "H dots concern a Jennie." "What crime, for the love of Heaven?" "I am not at liberty to tell you. She will do that." "Woo?, go down and rouse up Jehl, and tell Mm to put Parson Goodwin's mule In the stable for the nieht. And tell bim tj !pat the black draught-horses to the c!oe c image and light boih the front lanters .'r we shall have a dark, stormy road Shut tbe d(or, yon interna' I bee your pardoa, parson, bnt that villian always leares the door ajar after him." The g:od pastor bowed gravely. And the mrjrr completed hia toi.et bv the time the servant returned and reported the cirri agi teadv. "The Devil's Punch Bowl!" was the order given by Old Hurricane as he lollowed the minister into the carriage. "And now, sir," he continued, addressing his CDmpanioa, "I think you bad better repeat tbat part of tbe Church litany that prays to be delivered from battle, murder and sudden death;' for if we should be so lucky as to escape Black Djnald and his gang, we ahall have at least an equal chance of being upset in the darkness of tnese dreadful mountains." An iron bar, tliref -fonrtbi ot an irch wide by three-eighths thick and lon enough to reach from the top to tLe bottom cf the end gate, is fastened to tbst part by one fastening, so that it will swlrp back acd forth. Intending from the bidecf thia bar is the ear-like arrangement which will tit into the staple when the end (rate is in proper position. It is undoubtedly an exceedingly useful contrirance and will ccme into general use on wagons, doing away with the old plan of rod with screw and cap Bttscbinent, It can be applied to any wagon box in a few minutes.
