lie turn of the Expedition in Pursuit of Apaches. The Hostiles Surrender After a Hard Fis'at in the Heart or the Sierra JIadres. Crock's Dispatch Giving1 tbe Details of the Campaign The Long and Bitter March. CROOK'S EXPEDITION. Official Information of III Campaign In th Sierra Eladres The Scene of the Captnie. Tcseoir. A. T., Jane 12. A. courier arrived at Tombstone last night from Crook'3 headquarters at Silver Creek, Arizona, bringing the first official information of Crook's expedition. It left American soil on the 31 of May, marching 200 miles southeast from San Bernandino on the boundary line of Chihuahua and t; on or a, following the trail of the hostiles. Crcok was guided by the Apache. Nadakia, who was captured near ?an Carlo?, just previous to thä expedition leaving. At a point about 200 miles south cf Ihe line the command crossed the Sierra .Madies racc;e, and advanced fifty miles over an indescribably rough tract, eight males being Killed by following over treciiic, and pressed on without deity. Tbe men 'were rendered nearly barefooted by the sharp recks. Afcer fourteen days' hard marrhing, nfgbt and day, the Indian camps at Chato and Hon i to were diacovered in the heart of the Sierra Midres in an almost impregnable position. Tbe Apaches did not dream of an attack, fcr the entrance to the strong hold was next to impassible, and the warriors were principally oat on a raid under Juh, only thirtyseven bucks being in the camp with the women and children. The San Carlos scout3, under Captain Crawford and Ieatenants Atwood and Mackey, with Al. Ssbree, Mcintosh and Mickey Free, chiefs cf the ecsuts, surrounded the camp bs-fore th? hostiles were aware of their proximity, and advanced from dillereui points and were nearbEfore they were discovered. The Fconts secrete J thtnjfelves behind rocks and commenced tiring upon the camp, creating a perfect panic A i-umber succeeded in escaping, though nearly all surrendered. Is ine were fonnd dead in the camp; five Mexican women and a little girl were recaptured. They were taken from Carmen eud Chihuahua, a: vi are cow with Crock in pot! health. Everything in the camp wes barned rr carried oil" by scouts. Among ihe property crured were 103 ponies tH( mult., forty btir loaded with p'nnder. saidl. s. ririiiep, clothes, gold and tilvtr wau LfV, ai.d several taounsnd dollars in gold, t liver and reenb tck?, showing that they bud been very emccessf al in their raid. After the tiht most cf those who escaped came ir. Altogether 3J prUonen were taken. TLe Chiefs captured were: Chato, Bonitc, Geronimo. Nachf z. Lsco and Nama. lie two latter were l:rg r.pjrte.l dead. The Cbift'j say an Americau b v, six years old. car tured a month agi in N-w M?xtco, js with the squaws in the mountains. Ha is no dcubt Charley McComas. It'innera were sent out. and he is expected in hourly. Alter tbe tight the command, with tht prisoners, marched leisurely back to the Anieri--can side, and tbe -entire command, with the prisoners, is now encarnpsd ou Silver Creek, about sixty miles south of Tombstone. Not one cf Crook's command was lost dnring the campaign. The courier states that the reason Crook remains at Silver Creek is that he i3 awaiting news from the Secretary of War as to what disposition is tobe rnad9 of the Indians, aa Wilcox, agent at San Carlos, refused to receive them ; and that he will go back to the Sierra Madres after the rest of the hostiles if they do not come in. In conversation with the courier he stated that the hostiles had plenty of money. One old tquaw, who was the possessor of three $5 bills, made irauiry of some one at Colonel Biddle's as to the value of her possessions. Upen being informed that the ncte3 were for $" each, she grunted, and decided to negotia;e, and pointed with her skinny fingar to the naught after the on each note. nite a number of bucks had silver stars and other ornaments beaten out of Mexican dollars on their head gear, and t-jveral of them American doutlaeagiei made into necklace3. A rcuh estimate of the amount cf wealth among them is fully $-".C00 and probably more. The, troops and packers of the command state that tne place where the capture occurred Is the prettiest spot on earth, and the read to it rougher than mortal man ever trod. Large numbers of hostil es seem pleased with the situaticn, evidently expecting an immediate return to the rtesn pots of San Carlos. The only complaint comes from tome of the f quaws, whose bucks are among those who made their escape. The officers who were with the expedition state that Crock had surrounded the Indians before they knew cf bis presence; that it hehi cot donero it would have taken six months and all the men in Arizona to have gotten tbe . As an illustration of Crook's modesty and total abi-er.ee cf fciss ar.d Kathens in his makf-cp, it may be stated that although the tight and capture occurred ou the 17th of last month, he leisurely retraced Lis steps to the camp cf supply at Silver Creek, not sending a courier ahead to signal his movements. The first intimation tad of Crook's return was the arrival of a' Lieutcn&r-t at Colonel Riddle's headqnuters at .S o'clec Sunday fcrenoon.' wi'h dispatches for Camp Bowit, the nearest army teiegraph station. Upon makinc inquiry cor.csrning: the Gen eral, who a.i tnrpo.sd to be 100 distant in the Sierra Madres, ine the snrprie that awsited the iviles imgcamp when infirmd that Crook was only two hours behind i'h tte c-p'ured Apache3. At about 10 c'clcrk, the General rode into camp with bis ort, and greeted Colonel iiuuic ntiu liilc ...'Jii.lt J, . VVliuurj ; AULA airaightway struck out fur tbe w&snbasm which he had pied. and was soon engsged in performing bis ablu'ion; after which he ibiew bimalr into a cuop stool and engaged in cenvenation about this campaign in an ofT-hnOd wy, as if banting the cruelest ai d fiercest foe on the c micent ir the wildand incit iracos&ible country to be fcucd. was a matter of verydiy occurrence. A Lieutenant, name nr known, was the only rtnon wounded in Crock's command, and Le but slightly. Jiapatcti From Crook OlTio;TArUcaIars in Detail. The result of tbe Star Itoute trials has again given rise to the question, How is it that Star Route frauds of such magnitude conld b3 practiced in the Pes to ill e Department and remain covered up so long? The answer is found in part in the la,w regulating the disposition of postal receipts and the payment cf postal expense?, lly an act of 13 P it was provided that all receipts of all Departments of the Government from whatever source should be covered iuto the Treasury in bulk, and that all expenses of collecting the same and all disbursements of whatever nature should be raede through checks from the Treasury Department, countersigned by either the Fi rat or Second Controller, aller the eccounts had bten audited by the Auditor of the Treasury designated to an lit the accouatj of tte Department account of which the psyn:tnt is Made. While it would hardly be practicable to entirely abolish the exception of the law of 1SII and require the i'ostcrlice Department to account for all its frand3 in the same manner that the other Departments are compelled to do, Treasury officers think that some action should be taken to provide that the piyraeut of all moneys, except the sa'urifs o: tbe smaller orhct'8, shall be made thro .10 the Treasury Department. 1 TBK lovi: or dcki2j.
