TRUE Temperance Is not signing a pledge or taking a solemn oath that cannot be kept, because of the non-removal of the cause liquor. The way to make a man temperate is to kill the desire for those dreadful artificial stimulants that carry so many bright intellects to premature graves, and desolation, strife and unhappiness into so many families.
It is fact! Brown's Iro Bitters, a true non-alcohol-ic tonic, made in Baltimore, Md., by the Brown Chemical Company, who are old druggists and in every particular reliable, will, by removing the craving appetite of the drunkard, and by curing the nervousness, weakness, and general ill health resulting from intemperance, do more to promote temperance, in the strictest sense thcJi any other means now kr.own. It is a well authenticated fact that many medicines, especially ' bitters are nothing but cheap whiskey vilely concocted for use in local option countries. Such is not the case with Brown's Iron Bitters. It is a medicine, a cure for weakness and decay in the nervous, muscular, and digestive organs of the body, producing good, rich blood, health and strength. Try one bottle. Price $1.00. IT LEADS ALL. Those of our readers who hare been at sea, eepeci&lly in tha South may have eeen the common flyirgujb, with its brilliant blue ar.d-niver bedy and lace-like, 8be3ny wiDgs. From the crett cfablue wave they dirt, singly or in flocks, flattering along, rUing and falling, turning in carve, and returning to the water with a splash perhaps to fall a victim to sonic watchful bonito (or dolphin) that has been closely flljwing them beneith the water. Thece privateers of ttc sea are their greatest enemies, as they rise in the air following them under water, and emerging jus, in timo to catch the luckless flyers aa they descend. The dolphins will take great leaps of twenty or thirty feet in following the poor UjiDg-fisn, which notwithstanding their locg wings and wonderful powers, often fall victims t their tireleas pursuers. Tfcey frequently fly aboard vessels at night, perhaps attracted by tbe lights, or, it may ba, caught up by the wind from the crest of some curling wave, and carried high in air against the eail?. The gurnard, though it has also long, wieg- ise fins, presents otherwise a totally diilerent appearance, its head is inclosed in a bony armor, from which project two h&rp Epines. Some of these are of a rich pink color, while others are mottled with ie i, yellow, and blue, and as they fly alon; over the water, and the sunlight falls upon their glittering scales, tbv seem to glow with a golden luster. v ith such hard bfads, it will net be surprising informa tion that they are disagreeable fellows to ome in contact with; at least, to thought a sailer who was standing a, dutk upon the quarter-aect of a vessel, near ono of the Wert India Island1). Suddenly, he found himself lyirg upon his back, knock ed over by a monster gurnard that, with a core of ethers, had darted iron the water, thii one strikiDg the man fairly in tbe lcrehe&d. The gnrnarda are also chased by dolphins, and they are frequently eeen to rie in t choois, to escape from the larger tUb, vhile hovering abore them are watchful gulls and man-of-war birds, readv to steal them from tha jaws of their enemies of tho sea. In company with these flying-Sih may often be teen curious whito bodies, with long arms and black eyes. They are flying iquida, members of the cuttle-fish Jam ily, and the famous bar. of the Newfoundland cod-fishermeo. On the banks they are often seen in vast shoal, and during storms tons of them are thrown upon the shore. When dartintr from wave to wave. they resemble sLvery arrows, often risirg and boarding ships in their- headlojg flight. valuable are they for bait, that four or tine hundred vessels at St. Pierre are en gaged in calching them by means cf jiggers. Many of the squid family leave the water when pusutd. Even the largest of them, often foity or II (ty feet loDg, have eon seen to ns ten or ntteen feet in the air, and sail away as if propelled by some mj eterious force, their hideous arms dripting and gretening. They are certainly the iarg st and strangest of the flyers with out wings. A Good lecorl for Fanners. There is a general dieccntent amon;; fa-meri' sons. They dislike the plodding work of the farm, and long for the larger ii.o of too city, for the quicker returns and the prospective wi!tb prcmi-ed in manu factures and commerce. Wo do not bf lieve the newspaper tale, 4ts L to, about the liritish curate who wis instantaneously photographed while ki&sing by special request a girl who swore she loved him madly but in vain. The story is that she sent him a copy of the photograph with word that the complete set of one dczen could be had for $1 2U0. The whole story sounds unlikely. That tbe maiden pretended to love the curate, a.'d did not, ii improbable, because of the notorious bona Öde weakness ol young .ngnsn women tor curat 3. If she said that she loved him, it was Drobably true. Secondly You can cot photograph a ansa, A running horse can oe taken, out a kiss that is worth taken is 93 per cent.

If Any one thinks it is any fun to kiss a young woman jo don't know he makes a mistake. Emotion being wholly absent from such a salutation nothing remains but proximity, which makes up only 2 per cent, of a real kiss. A man who would refuse to slight a boon as this to any good -looking girl who wifhed for it must be greatly wanting in humanity acd, if a curate, w uld deserve to be un f rocked. Wir AND FLKASASTRT.

Clergymen ought tote very careful in the choice of language or serious results may ensue. "My brethren," said one lately, "I will now pass," and before he could proceed a sleepy hearer in the front pew suddenly started into life and cried out, ''Then I make it spade and play it alone. ' Oh, you better talk!" exclaimed Mrs. Smith to her lord and master, who was jokin? her upon her "running after him." A west end young lady brought the man she loved to the ' pepping point" by saying to him, while gleams of love-light shot from her half-shut eyes, "1 have had two oners of marriage. Instead of recommending fifty cents worth of aqua pura for a sick headache, she may prescribe a fourteen-dollar bonnet, or a twenty-five dollar surah overskirt, or something that way. xiorristown Hearald. "Now, cUldren," said Mrs. Shoddy, as she finished staining their lips and chins with rouge; "now, children, after you are out a little while you must ring Mrs. En vious' cell and pretend you ve called to play with her little daughter. If she asks you what made the red stains on your face, tell her you had strawberries for dinner. There," she muttered, when the children were out of sight. "There, I guess she 11 ba blind with envy when she thinks I have been able lo buy strawberries at 4U cents a pint." One of the clerks in the well-known rail road office was blessed on Friday evening by the gilt of a little responsibility. 1 he boys in the cflice were in ignorance of the blissful fact until yesterday morning. Tben, as tho newly made parent entered the office, his appearance denoted something unusual, but nothing was intimated by the young man. As he walked to his desk, however, he came upen a dog, the pet of the establishment, and heretofore an pecial favorite with him. Giving the dog a kick, he explained the whole situation in one remark, "Get out of papa's way, you, sir!" Young Smith called on Miss Higgenbottorn a few nights ago, and go. very wet on his way to the young ladj's residence. After he an ived, nothing would do but Ehe must make a fire for him, and inrpitect his protestations she soon had a roaring fire started. Drawing near it Mr. Smith poised one fcot on the other in front of the blaz. For some moments not a word was spoker. Presently the young lady gently remarked: "Mr. Smith, please take down the blower I think the fire has a good start." Down carte the le6t amid smiles from tbe girl. Smith doa't go there any more. To an impulsion of ether ho attributes the existence throughout the universe of the action of gravitation. In forecasting weather Mr. Rollo Kas. sell points out that next to frequent readings of the barometer and thermometer locally, and a knowledge of the distribution of atmospheric pressure over aa wide an area as may be, observation of tbe character of clouds, especially of the cirrus varitty, ia of the greatest utility. Observation of cirrus can plainly be made use of in a system of telegraphic weather forecasts. Sweden's activity in science is creditable. Among other very able observers the corvette Varadis, when she starts on her trip around the world, will carry out Dr. Stolpe, from whom much interesting infor. mation may be expected. And the Swedish Academy of Science lately offered to reward the vessel bringing the first valuable intelligence authoritative dispatches, etc to the party wintering at Spitzbergen for making meteorological observations in SDltsbergen. The Nature reports that on April 10, between the hou.i of 8 and 3 in the morning, a remarkable mirage was seen at Olsta, in the tarish of Sala. Sweden. There was a distinct representation of a town built In
Oriental style, situated by the sea, with wellshaped minarets and complete temples. On the left appeared a forest of line - cjpres. In the foreground was a train in motion. Presently a body of soldiers marched by with fixed bayonets, from which the tun was reflected. This vision lasted about an hour. India is endeavoring to manufacture her own paper in the future. Instead of sending the raw material here and to England, then receiving it back as paper .after paying freight both ways, there is beginning to be an effort of no mean nature to save the price of carriage and to spend the money now ''squandered abroad' among her own natives. The latter, by the way, is a poor argument, and is just as destructive as the reverse. The best indication of this new
effort is that India is endeavoring to live upon a higher scale of existence by diversifying her industries. KELIOIOUS lflTLLlGEXCE AMD INCIDENT. The London Missionary Society owns five mission ships. There are 18.000,000 Catholics mSpan and 40,000 magnificent churchee. ''Shall he wear a silk hat?" was the subject of a lecture recently delivered by the Rev. Emory J. Hayner, D. Dn of Brooklyn, to the young people. Many cf the Jews in Germany are in favor of transferring their Sabbath to the Christian Sunday, the present style being very inconvenient for business purposes. Rev. Mr. Praut, editor of a Virginia City, Montana, religiou paper says: "Editing a paper is like trying to "wing a very large cat in a very email garret wilheut hurting the garret." The Baptists in the State of Connecticr'. have purchased a large tract of land tt Crescent Beach, about seven miles west ol New London, and will there establish a denominational watering place. "I like to hear that young clergyman preach," remarked a country cirloficitv clergyman, who stood in the rural pulpit and put on airs. "He just stands up there and tells everything he knows." In the New England Conference of tbe MethodistEpiecopal Church there is only or minister who receives as high a salary as $2,000. There are only five who receive more than $1,000 each. The average lalary is about $500. The Lutheran says: "Keep out the rogue j and hypocrites from tbe Church." It would strike an average man, looking on from the outside, that these are the very persons who should be brought into the Church and made better men. During the past yer sores of S3cieties of Christian Endeavor for young people have been established in various parts of the country, and it is proposed to hold the second annual conftrerce of these societies in the Second Parish Church, Portland, Me., on June 7. The Christian Advocate declares that a Church donation party is in most cases a tardy substitute for an overdue salary. It might have added that in a majority of instances they are regarded as an intolerable nuisance by the clergymen on whom they are inflicted. The fact is now brought to lizht that the lady who wrot9the famous "Widow Bedoit Papers' had other gifts besides those of mere humor. She wrote a number of ex ceedingly beautiful hymns. Her name was Mrs. V hü eher, and she wa the wife of an Episcopal clergyman. She died about thirty years ago. An inmate of the penitentiary approached the warden while the latter was wa'king around the grounds and said: "May I have a few wordi with you, sir? Thanks. Of what denomination is the man who preached here last Sunday?" "Presbyterian." "Well, I'm a Methodist, and am firm in the faith. My father always taught me to hold up for my religion, and I'd like for you to get an other preacher. I have full confidence in the one who preached last Sunday, but you know how a man u about his Church affairs." 'iYou were put in here for stealing a horso, were you not?" "Yes, sir." "Well,! guojs you II have to put up with the Presbyterian a while longer. When you serve out your term you can go back to your faith." Arkansas Traveller. Ham an Blood. American ladies visiting foreign lands excite the admiration of beholders and the envy of their transatlantic sisters with tbe surpassing excellence of their teeth.
