Tha Trtunrw of Alabama Appropriates S2?7,OCO of tb. EtatVa Fonda and Sklpa Oat. Moktgomebt. Ala, Jan. 3L There la great excitement here. A Commute e to examine the books and account oi State Treasurer Vincent were to have begun the Examination yesterday. Vincent left the city Monday night A letter from him to his chief clerk was delivered to the Utter late yesterday evening, 10 be laid before the Governor. Vincent paid he was behind, but was going to New York to get the money, whicn the letter indicated he had loaned. An examination of the books, cashier's
" and others, late last night, showed that Vincent speculated largely in cotton futures. VThe deficit, as far as can be gathered, ia between $225, OX) and $300.000. f Treasurer Vincent left Monday night by
what route is not known. The Governor will offer a large reward, and has sent telegrams to the pclice ot all large cities. Vincent is five feet ten inches high, very neat in dress, brown hair and beard fall and long, with mustache. He has very bad teeth and a scar on the forehead. The Governor sent to the Legislature the following message; To the House of Representatives: It becomes my painful and mortifying dut7 to Inform jou that laaac H. Tho amount of Vincent's defalcation can only oe sscertained after careful examination of the Treasurer's boots and a careful count cf the money in the Treasury, but a hurried and partial Investigation Indicates that it Is more than $.00.GCO. It is not known by what train or in what direction Vincent left Montgomery. Means will be adopted to Intercept and detain him if possible. It In believed the State Is largely secured against ultimate low. The two Houses will have communications deli yered to them from time to aime of any farther word that comes into m hands. (Signed) K. A. Ü Xeal, Governor. Large sums cf money, sent te Fred Wolfle, supposed to be dealing in cotton, Jdave been traced np, and he dealt also, it is upocsed, with other cotton houses. 'ihe Committee counted t!ie money in the Treasury vault, and found $152,000. The deficit is $227,000, amply secured by good bondsmen. It is developed that the money was taken in the last two years, and nearly all before November last Vincent, by the statement of a witness before the Committee, lost over $100 000 in cotton through one house Fred Wolffe's and some through others. It is surmised he may have loaned some. There has been some talk since he bought his house, rich f urnimre, carnage and horses. The Governor has taken charge of the keys of the Treasury. The default will not interfere with the business cf the Statet in the least, or cause any interruption to the paj-ment of warrants. Tbe January interest is all paid. New York, Jan. 31. Tbe defalcation of State Treasurer Vincent, ot Alabama, caused a great surprise. Vincent La a lartre acuainrance in W all street and is well liked. Vi c erks in the office of Frederick VtoltVa J deferred inquirers to tbe chief for the nature and extent of the business dene. Wolffe this evening refused to 6 peak npon the eub'ject. The Importers' and Traders' Bank C paid the January interest, Vincent having 'sent the money in advance, as was the ccs 1 torn. The bank loses nothing. The police v scoured tne hotels for v lucent. Although
rwjpot found, it is believed he is in the city.
V ine defalcation, it is thought, will interfer
witn the arrangements to take np the County bondi at nineteen cents on the dollar. THE CIBCC9 FIBS. Terrible Details of tha Flreat Ilardltücheft. Jfarw.YoBr, Jan. 30. TLe English mails bring " accounts of the Berditecheff Circus fire. The Vienna correspondent of the Loa don Chronicle gives tbe following account The performers had reached the fifth item in the programme, twenty clowns be ing in the ring, when another clown in act ing costume rushed in shouting "Fire fire!" At first the people thought this was part of the programme and laughed, but immediately afterward the ringmaster rushed in and gave the alarm. The scene of horror tbat ensued was indescribable. The udienca was so closely packed that motion was almost impossible. Borne in despair flung themselves from the galleries, and parents unable to save themselves made le?pcrate attterapta to fare their children by throwing them down into the rintr. Some cf the men wearing the long coats of the iiusaian Jews were entangled on spikes, and remained hanging in the air while the whole building resounded with heartrend ing cries. In the ring where the clowns had been performing there was a carpet, and in little while the children weie safe in the cen rof this, but when the grown Deorle 'in their despair bezan jumping from the dress circle and galleries, the whole ring oecame an inextricable mass, in which tbe children were trampled to death and suffocate 1 before the flames reached
-4 them, but even this was not the
f wot6t. The horses soon became unmanageable, and about a dozen of them, driven Wad with pain and terror, broke into the png, trampling to death the people huddled together there. All this occurred in less "Time than it takes to describe it and in ten rainutes all was over, at least half the people who had been in the building bei eg bqrned to death or suffocated. At the windows and various exits scenes of the moat horrible description were enacted, some of the strongest, in their efiorts to extricate themselves from the trugsling mass, iorcing otneis, nearer than them eel vee, into the flames. Special to the Sentinel: Michigak Citt, Ind., Feb. 2. The Senate Prison Committee arrived here this morning for the dnal object of investigating the man agement of the rnson and hearing the peti tion of the citizens for the construction of the Fish Lake sewer. The delegation was a little nervous in consequence of the tedious night journey, but the courteous h epitality oq tbe part of the citizens soon restored them to their normal condition. A visit was made to the Prison at early morning, before the blinding snow, and a thorough overhauling of the institution was entered into. Every nook and corner was in?ected. The prisoners were interviewed and the various Ehop. Hospital, oflicea and fish rooms fully inquired into, and the uniniruous opinion was that they were in eminently tatisfactory order. In secret session the Committee passed an order instructing the Warden to present a detailed report of convict labor contracts, together with the number of men employed outside of the walls, the object being to cut off the latter arrangement, assuming it interferes with public labor. In the afternoon the Committee was entertained at luncheon by Mrs. Senator Hutchinson, and after the ride through the city repaired to the parlor of the Jewell House, where a committee of citizens presented their claims for an appropriation for he erection of the proposed sewers; $33,000 is asked. The Committee is favorable to the scheme. The kindness and attention of Warden Murdock is spoken of cn all side?. and there is general satisfaction among the citizens here with bis management.
