TIIE STAR ROUTE CASES. Argument In Support of the Motion ta Qaah tho Indictment Against Voramj and Itrady. Vashisgto. March 25. The Slar Route cases came up in the Criminal Court to-day, and Colonel Ingersoll, ou lehali ot Stephen W. Dorej, notifled the Court tliat he desired to file a notion to set aside the indictment, and was prepared to submit authoiitles in support of iL Colonel Ingersoll read the motion, which was Jwsed on the following grouuds: That the Grand Jury had no lesal authority to find said Indictment; that the In.strict Attorney had no authority todrawfaid indictment and exhibit it to tfce Grand Jury; because George B. Corkhtll. the District Attorrry. did exhibit the indictment without order of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia or any Justice thereof, and that the Grand Jury did not find the indictment of their own kuowledije: neither were Dorsey etal. bound over to answer the action of the Grand Jury. Jere Wilson, counsel for Ger.eral Brady, theu
filed a motion to quash the indictment as to his client, and after reading the paper, which was very Un?. and set forth numerous reasons, inCludi:; want of jurisdiction, insnfli.iency ir averment of fcu to set forth a crime asainst the Uul'.ed States because the crime as set forth I not euch a ona as to be penal under the law of the United States, bceiuse at the time of trie coi:ir-iisi-ivn of the acts charged the defendant was an orlieer of the Uuited States Government and his actions not subject to an investigation by tfcis t'ov.rt Ju iee Wilson read a motion, on behsJf rf L. G. nine.'to quufth the indictment for substautlally the fSEio grounds as set forth in the preceding motion. After a lone discussion it was ajrrecd to postpone the further hearing of Dorsey and Brady until Friday next. Colonel Inersoll gave notice he bhould also ü.c amotion ttquush a demurrer. Color el Bliss then asked for an arraignment of th' partie iudicted m the straw bond ra-c, and Kalt' M. Arrrctrrnr. Albert E. Boone, James V. ionohue and William '. Jackson werearraii ced and entered formal pleas of not guilty. The Tariff ou Sugar. WAMiiN;ro:, March '25. There are .everal members of Congress who favor a protective tariff wto r.re cpo'-sins the proposition to remove or reduce the tariff on sugar. It is found that the cane fields of Louisiana are entirely too limited to supply the sugar consumers of the United States. In consojuenco of the high tariff ou rugar the price is kept up to such a pitch that glucose is coming; very generally into use. and the healthfulness of glucose beinp; yet iu doubt, and of inferior qualities to it'gar, it is doired" to decrease its growing use. The .Sentinel correspondent to-day interviewed one of Ohio's most prominent Republicans on the propositou to remove or reduce the tariff on sugar. He believes that it should be protected to the extent it ii no longer. Speaking of glucose he said he believed that from 5 t J l-'t per cent, of glucose was contained la mutt of the candy sold at the present day. Whether it was injurious or not remained to be proved, but that it contained more or less sulphuric acid was certain, as that material is used to extract the glucose from the com starch. Sulphate of lime is then u. e l to extract or neutralize the e filet of the acid, which, however, it can only do to & certain exlent- The amcunt of glucose used is simply astounding bre'vr rs, fruitC&nners and others usin? it in tremt-; .'..us quantities. It can be purchased f r few ccnt a pound, and it Is therefore eay to s e what r vi. can be made by mixing i: witu i-gar that is worth eleven and twelve cents a pound. He thought the plan cf cheapening sugar would do far more toward driving glucose oit cf existence than tiiiu that article. The War Dudley 1 inures. Commissioner of Pensions. Colonel VC. V. Dudley, baa written a letter to the Select Committee on Beform iu the Civil service, regarding the 800 additional pension c!erk3 asked for by him in order to settle the enormous number of pension claims now ou file. He says if the request for an increased number is granted, the clerks should be selected, other things being nearly equal, from ex-Union soldiers, their sons, widows, or daughters, and other things being eqyal, or nearly so. Republicans thould be preferred, but they should not be divided aiuorigst the States end Territories In proportion to the vote each casts to the whole vote of the country, taking into consideration tue distribution of those uovr employed, and, in his udgment, the Republican vote should be tae basds, inasmuch as this U a Republican. Administration, allowing the Democratic vote as a basU whenever the pendulum shall swing the other way, if the Administration pass into Democratic hand. A Liberal Congress. The present is a very liberal Congress. Several appropriation moves have been widened iu their cope and few have been cut down. There have been additions made to propositions over the face of the original bills. The diplomatic, just passed; the rostofflce. inundated sufferers and several other bills were increased, instead of decreased, as is usual with Congress. There is a feeliHg growing for liberal appropriations. An immense fund is accumulating in the Treasury. No dispoistion prevails for calling In bonds, paying them off and decreasing the public debt, as the pay ment f bonds calls in the National Bank circula tion. The average. Congressman and Senator hearkens not unto the cry for lower taxes. So the only way of getting rid of the fund accumulating. witn any degree of equity, is oy UoerU appropnations. nue this congress is a liberal one, there yet appears: an admirable amount of dtecreUen iu most of the work. Toui uiy Says Grant 1)1.1. ' Sr. Loi is. March 25. Thomas M. Nichol, the few York banker, arrived here this morning, iu jefereuce to General Grant's denial that he had rver conversed with him concerning GarSoid and tosecrans, Mr. Nichol reaffirmed to a Post Dispatch reporter most positively his former statement. Mr. Nichol says there is nothinir remarkable in ;he fact that General Grant does not remember him. as be was only one of the hundreds who called on him and hod a fe.v minutes talk, but he himself would not be likely to lonset the only call and conversation with Grant. He called on him in his room in the Fifth Avenue Hotel at General Garfield's request and gave him a letter to him from Garfield. After reading the letter the conversation ensued and then Grant made the remark about Garfield aud Krfsecrans. which has already been published. Mr. Nichol concluded b;,statin? that he made the assertions with the full realization of the fact he might be called ob to support them. A r errthle Murder. N'eemiam, Mass., March 25. To-night John Sullivan, an operative in one of the mills, went home slightly under the iDtineuc of liquor, and after a tew words with his wife seized a razor and cut her throat, severing the jugular vein and carotid artery. The woman, despite the fatal wounds, rushed Into the street, followed by her husband brandishing the razor and lnilicting at every step ghastly cuts with the weapon about her head and phoul-fürs. She got away from him for a short distance, ran to the houooI a neighbor, but while endetvoi'ngtoobtain entrance, was overtaken and seietl by the hair by her husband, who renewed bis am i. It Is expected that Governor Crittenden will call an extra session of the State Legislature in a few days to redmtrict lhe Elate. The State Central Committee, alaro uumber of leading politicians and a great majority of the Democratic newspapers in ih State have expressed themselves in favor of such action, and a eub-Committe of the State Committee has gone to Jefferson City to so notify the Governor.
