The Captain took the bird home and be was taught to speak socio Kngliih worda, forgetting the language that ho Lad learned first. Year3 passed, and the parrot .Btill lived as the pet of tho whole family, lie grew to be very eld, and could scarcely climb his pole, but nobody bad the heart to destroy him. One day, a Spanish gentloman called, and was shown to tho room where the p:rrot lived. A lively conversation took placo between tho visitor and his host. As soon a? the parrot heard a few Spanish words, he spread out his wings, repeated some cf the Spanich phrases he had learned in his youth, and fell down dead. Down the treet, on his new velocipede, came Alec "Woods, a boy often years. He was racing with another boy, and just a little ahead. He was very sure he should win a pocketful of marbles, which his brother had offered to the winner of the race. A lady was coming up the street, laden with parcels, and she chanced to drop one. Alec's quick eye e;vw it, and in an instant hewHSotfLis steed, and, picking up the parcel, restored it to its owner, while with a shout cf triumph, his playmate rod 2 on and won the race. 4You goose!" laughed the big brother, wüo had seen tho whole thing. The Sawing: Match. Ada Carlcion in Wide Awake. In one corner of the old academy play ground a group had gathered about two boys, Sandy Jardinu and Alax Guerney. Sandy was a tall, strong, large-featured lad, as opposite as the pole3 to the little, lithe, aark youth who stood near him look ing up in his face with laughing black eyes. They were leaders, these two, each of his particular clan; and respecting their popularity, the school was nearly equally di vided. A 6trong rivalry existed between them, good-natured enough for the most part, tnough sometimes verging toward uD.frior.dli nes3. Just now,Sandv was evidently excited, almost angry. In a foot-race the preceding Saturday, Max had beaten him, gaining a supremacy which to might possibly held. "Yes, jou did whip mo, fast, enough," Sandy was aying, while a dull red mount ed to h.3 cheek; 4 but, all tbestme, I'll whip you to pay for it, and any day you've a mind to set." "The track x.a too short," cried one of Sandy's champions. "That's what's the matter 1 lly tho time Sandy got under headway, he had to turn. The walk was laid oatfjrlittla follows." Considerable laughter followed thiä sally, and the "little fellow," Max, joined in "it heartily. 'Com, I'll match you in any way you like," continued Sandy. Come, nowl row ing, riding, running, wrestling which hall it be? Cornel I dare ycu, Max Guer ney I ' A little murmur of appro al ran around the group, and then the boys waited for Max's reply. "Well they knew he would sever refuse a dare. as the challenged party, have a right to choose the weapons?" interrogated Max, with a side glance from his laughing black eyes. "Well, then, I'll neither ride, nor row, nor run, nor wrestle; but I'll saw wood with you, Sandy, aDd you may beat me if jrou can!" "What a clamor of high, boyish voices met him. 'Oh, no foolinr now!' ""Whose wood?'' "IIa! ha! ha!" "I'll tell you." Max's voice rose clear above the tumult. "I'm in earnest enough. There's old Uncie Nathan Dlins and his wife, poorer than double distilled poverty, and nobody to do a hand's-turn for 'em .since 'Siah died. I saw Uncle Nathan out chewing at his wooJpile. You know they hauled him some cord-wood last winter, your father, Sandy, and mine, and two or three others; and I made up my mind to go over and saw for him somb Saturday, any way, poor old fellow I There's pretty near Ave cords of the wood, I guess; and we'll

Up spoke a blu-j-eyod, wiry liltla fellow at his elbow: "You shan't do the whole 'of it! .v'ay. Charley Hdgbee, I'll split for Sandy, and you for Maxl" Agreed!'' said Charley. "And we'll wheel in ior you two, Art Humphrey and I !'' declared Sandy's brother Jack. ''Won't ue. Art?" "Whow! How far my liitle candle throws its beams!'' laughed Mcx. "I'll tell you, boys; wo might have the match ia Uncle Nathan s back yard, charrro lifteen centa or so admittance, aud give Uncle Nathan the money." Hooray!" tbxitcl Reub Story. My brother lijb works in tne Clarendon btar office, and I'll get hi m to print our haiiubills. He owes me t3a cf'r.ti, anyhow." "Good for you, IC.ubf cried Max. "Grand sawing match I Du to splitting ditto I Ditto wheeling ditto! lf;een cants admittance! Children, full prioa! Gate open from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. Good enough !" Next day the propictive sawing match was nobed about the town, and a day or two later the hand-bills were out. It made a great deal of tallr, both sportive and serious, in the little village. "It's a good idee a fu?t-rRte idee I" That was Captain "Winty CoolMge, you might know. "It Tarns the boys that raUin' kindness to other folks with their fun
don't hurt nothia. It's wtith a quarter, and I'm a-going t j pay itl I'm a-going to pay UP There was every indication that the saw ing match would be a grand succe:-a financial! v. "I'don't believo the back yard will- hold 'em all," laughed Max to tho half dozen boys who, wita hiui, wero taking their homowatd way after school Friday nignt. 'Have you got the ticket.-, T.fub?" Yes; a hundred and fifty of 'em." Good! Now all we want is a fair day." Tho day proved to lo all that could be desired. Hazy clouds veiled the" burning face of the sun, and there was a brisk, cool brnozo blowing. The sawing was to begin at 0 o'clock; and befora th;t time the board benches ranged along tho backjard fence wer? ülled with merry lookers-on. Uncle Nathan sat in " his low, vinedraped door way, beaming at everybody over his brass-bowed spectacle?. There were Max and Sandy, fresh and smiling, with their saws; P.ck and Charley with their axes, and Jack and Arthur with thtir wheelbarrows. Maxrs fi.ther stood near, watch in hand. "Go!" said ho. Instantly both s?iwa cut with a tuneful shriek inta tho wood, nearly drowning the sound of Teieg Toothacre's crackM tiddle, which had been engaged, with IVIcg, to mako music for the occasion. At precisely the same instant the two logs across the two 6awhorses fell in twain. llow everybody cheered, sending little tingles of excitement thrilling along every boyish nerve! And Uncle Nathan waved ono of tho eyes out of his spectacles;, and Aunt Nab by, over his shoulder, fluttered her big calico apron, and bobbed her gray cockscrew curls, to the? tune of "Pop goes tho "Weasel," which l'ele's cracked fiddle was merrily playing. Tho hours were on. The crowd came and went, surging in and out of the back yard with jolly'chat and laughter. Tho saws shrieked; 'the axes Cashed in tho air; the wheelbarrows trundled from woodpile to woodihed. Peleg . fiddled through and through his repertory of tune3 from "Yankee Doodlo" to ''Money Musk;" and at length came high noon, with twenty minutes or refreshments. In the alternoon the ecitement waxed stronger. The boys sawed steadily on with scarcely any symptoms of fatigu?, save that there wa3 a scarlet flush on Max's dark cheek, and Sandy's lips were pale, and trembled a little nervously. Everybody was laughing and talking of tho sport. Even Mr. Culonel Grosvenor, the great lady of the village, drove up to the back-yard gate in her carriage, bringing a ' demijohn of delicious iced lemonade tor tboj young sawyers and their liiends. Captain! Winty Cooiidgo walked around, rubbing his pudgy hands together, and sprinkling in encouraging remarks between the shriek3 of tlia saws and tho squoaks of tha fiddle. "It's a good tiling to strengthen the muscles tho muscles. A long-chalk sensibler than walking ten hours to a stretch, so 'iis, so 'tis ! Good boys! Doing well, all on ye!'' And how earnest every one became, to bo sure when at length tho sticks in each woodpile might bo counted? "You never saw anything like it!" said Max to his mother, between huge mouthfuls of bread and jam, at the tea-table that night. "Everybody who had a handkerchief shook it, I know, and Aunt Nabby waved her tig checked apron. 'They wero all singing out 'Go it!' and -Good!' till a fellow couldn't hear himself think. Uncle Nathan sat in the door trotting his foot and wiping his eves, though what for I can't imagine; and l'eleg jumped up on his nail-keg and fiddled like the whole town was burningl Ob.'twas great! And when wo counted up the money there were twenty-nine dollars and siify cents cb aa cash for Undo Nathan, and everybody cheered igain like fun when we handed it over. And Captain Winty made one of his Speeche?. Uncla ' Nathan broke right down when he tried to thank u, and Aunt Nabby kissed us boys till round. Ye?, ma'am! Oh, yes'm; Sandy beat by twenty-four S'Hionds; and Sandy's Cap'n again at school, ni of cöumo Dickey l'ird beat Charley, because Charley couldn't split my last stick till I'd sawed it, for they kept right on our heels all the whole timo. IJut Art Humphrey beat Jack Jardine! For Art caught up the wood in his arms, quick as Charley split it, and ran into tho sned with it and out while Jack was unloading his wheelbarrow. It gives a fellow an appetite," concluded Max, with a sidelong glanc from his laughing eyes as he reached for his third helping of jam; but it's a little hard on the arms!' In his lecture, 'Caristianity and Hindooism Contrasted," published recently, Sir Charles Trevelyan expresses his conviction that the conversion of India to Christianity will take place in a different way from that generally anticipated. -."When tho absorption of Christian truth has gone far enough, he says, native op;nion will declare itself and "a nation will be born in a day."
