A Pleasant Interriew Wltiv Governor Hendricks About Hl Eecent Trip.

Governor Hendricks ,was delighted with his sojourn of a little more than two weeks in New Mexico, from which, he returned on Saturday inornin. The principal points at which he stopped was Las Vegas and Santa Fe. The first-named place i a community of towns Old Las Vegas. East Las Vegas, West Las Vegas, and the Springs. The word is Spanish, and the English interpretation ia "The Meadows." Altogether th town, or towns, contain a population of about Ä.O0U, a majority of whom are Mexicans or Greasers. It is something over 100 years old, and has been an important trading post 'for the last quarter of a century. Here in -large quantities were stored the supplies for the Army, always in trouble with the. Indians, and here emigrants to California, oyer the Old Santa Fe trail, from which the railroad takes its name, corralled their stock and stopped for a f.w days to refresh themselTts. THS MKXtCA

have been under the influence of the JesuiUj, and the Jesuits are a people of exemplary

The native of New Mexico cut hay with

as he does to-day, and knew something of

religion, while Indiana was yet peopled with savage. The liio Grande at Santa Fe

and Albuquerque fertilized growing crops of wheat and corn while the W abash, from its

extreme source to the Ohio, meandered

throuzh an unbroken forest. Ihere was a

time when the most profitable trade to St.

Its vast wealth as attested by its storehouses, the barren and forbidding aspect of nature, yet its evident productiveness.' Two years ago the railroad found Las Vegas an old Mexican town of sun-dried mud the material, ot which Babylon was built. To-day a new and beautiful city has leaped into existence. "I found," said Mr. Hendricks, "quite a large number of my old friends and acquaintances from Indiana. Colonel William Steele, formerly of Wabash, later of Indianapolis, is now a large real estate dealer and Justice of the Peace in Kast Las Vegas. The office is an important one there. His health is good, and I never saw him in better spirits. There are two daily papers in Las egas, one of which is edited by a young man from Indiana, Mr. Kistle-." One week ago yesterday Mrs. Hendricks . attended the Church of which she is a member in Las Vegas. It was an adobe building, but very beautiful inside. There are several elegant Churches, she says, in the city. GENERAL LEW WALLACE. At Santa Fe, the Governor and Mrs. Hendricks were very cordially recleved by General Lew Wallace. The Governor was highly gratified to hear of the esteem in which as he exprejsed it "my neighbor was held by the people of the Territory." "Ilia administration has been a miracle of success." . In answer to the question. "When will General Wallace leave New Mexico," he answered: "General Wallace desires to turn the office over to his successor in jeron. That is a duty that the Governors of New Mexico, it teems, hitherto have avoided. General Wallace himself experienced great inconvenience in taking charge of affairs. His predecessor left the Territory before he arrived. AXOTHER IXDIAXA JIAK
