His father and mother we redead, having willed him the farm and jev?ral "black folk." The friendship between iuill and Pent was a subject of remark, for whTie Pent Mas vnlent, Guill was penial; wbere l'ent was "in fra tight." (iuill fav-n-l a adjustment and a hearty laugh. Yet :h two youn men were friends, it seemed rlfat they had been born friends; their fathers were friends. It was agreed 'that there should lx one witness to the encounter, and after engaging a man lH-nt wrote an explanatory letter and Rate it to the inn-keei r. U was Sunday afternoon. The three men went through an old orchard orchard only in memory, for nothing but the decaying trunks of the trees remained. Hack leu the way. He stopped at a sunken grave. A desperate struggle for old men. Ient wrested Iiis right arm from tbe grasp of lluck, and with a sweeping stroke almo-'t severed the black man's head from his body. Uuck still ht Id Pent around the waist, and, as he fell backward, piungcd Iiis knife into the murderer'! heart.
When the Coroner came the two men lay dead across the grave, locked in a tight em brace. A strange sight; tbe pale face of death and the aliened hue of earthly dissolu tion. (Jeorge Morland. Probably fieorge Morland painted more tavern ?ign tlian anv other artist of note. He who delighted in the companionship of hostlers, pot-tKiys, pugilists and horse jockey was not likely to think it derogatory to his dignity to oblige the dealers in the lb'itor he loved 90 well and so unwisely. When things were so flourishing with Morland that be was ttie proud owner of eight saddlehorses, he Stabled them at the White Lion, Paddingtnn; and that the place might le worthy of an artist's stud, be minted the sign of the inn with bis own baud, an honor conferred for other reasons upon the Plough, at Kensal Green. One day Morland and Williams, the engraver, tramping Londonward from Peal, halted out'. 'de a small wayside ale house. They were tired, hungry, and thirsty; but their empty rockets forbade the iiope of obtaining rest "and refreshment by ordinary means. Morland wistfully contemplated the house until the landlord appeared at the door, then he exclaimed: "I' ion my life, I scarcely knew it, but it mmt be the black bull!" "l'o be sure it is, master; can't you ?ce the sign'."' said the landlord. "Ay. the board is there," answered Morland, "but the Ulack Hull is gone. I'ome. I'll paint you a new one for a crown." After thinking it over for a minute or two, the inn keeier closed with tbe oiler, and set a dinner and drink before the wayfarers, to which they did immediate justice. Then Morland asked bis host to ride to Canterbury for paint jmd a god brush. Half fearing his guests might depart in his absence, the landlord executed the behest in dotible-4tiick time, and the artist set to work; but by tbe time the black bull was linished the reckoning had risen te ten shillings, and. unwillingly enough, the sight-restorers were permitted to go with a promise to pay the balance at the lim opjortunity. ( n teaching town, Morland made for the Hole-in-thc-Wail, Fleet street, where he told of bi.s adventure on the road. A gentleman present was much interested in the narration, ami after hearing it to the end, took horse then and there, and riding into Kent lxiiight tbe black bull of the astonished boniface for ten guineas. The Length of Itee Tongues. I Prairie Farmer. l!eekecicrs owe Professor C'ok, of Michigan Agricultural College, a debt of gratitude for his iatieiit e.ieric!ents to see how far bees could extesm their tongues to reach honey. There are few beekeepers who have the necessary tools to measure bees' tongues, as a square ami a yard-stick would le of no acctMUit, but we can all measure th-ni as the Professor fells-us he did in one instance: "A box one-half inch deep, without top or bottom, was - ered with line gauze having fifteen meshes to the inch. A glass was then placed in thelvox, so inclined that while one end rented against the gauze, tbe other was one-half inch from it. The gia-s wa thinly spread with honey on the side next to the gaue. This was placed in a hive of Italians, when the glass was chancd of tbe honey for a dbdane- of twenty tour mohes trom the edge w luv tue glass rested on the gauze. The black ' es could only reach and only cleaned "or nineteen meshes. Many trials gave the same result. This then shows why Italians can gather and often do collect from flowers which fail utterlv to attract the black bees, ine nectar is oeyonti their re.-tcii. Other experiments showed the tongue ot the average Italian bee to be 'J!-10 of an inch in length. A ;cm! l'irklo for Mml. Prairie l'armer.J excellent pickle for taltin meat i.s An made as follows: To one pa lion of water take one and a half und of salt, balf a pound of brown sugar and half an ounce of saltpetre: boil these till no more scum rises, and skim the li(unras this rises until the pickle is clear; pour it into a tub to cool. Keep the meat two tlays before packing it. and rub it with a quantity of the ingredients, finely jiowdercd twelve hours before leaving it to drain: then pack closely in the barrel or tub, sprinkling each layer with more of the jowdcretl ingredients, anil turn on the pickle cold. When the meat is used the pickle may be boiled, skimmed, strained ana kept for'anot her season. Tbe iork packers thus keep their pickle from year to year, and preserve it with great care, knowia? that it improve with age ami the simple addition of n'resalt. Nothing on I'arth ao (..!. lU'orecster (Mas.) Soy. J "Certainly a strong ooinion," said ne of our jeiorters to whom the following was detailel bv Mr. Henry Kaschop, with Mr. (ieorpe l'. Miller. 418 Slain street, tbiscity: "I suffered so badly with rheumatism in my leg last winter that I was unable to attend to my work, Ijcing completely helpless. I ! heard of St. Jacobs Oil. and bought a bottle, after Rising which I felt greatly relieved. With the use of the second bottle I was com pletely cured. In my estimation, there Is nothing on earth so pood for rheumatism as St. Jacobs Oil. It acts like a charm." Nearly a year luv elapsed since the last wealthy young lady eloped with her faliier's coachman, and the many respectable young men v ho hojteful'.y sought employment in the stables of the rich are disconolaleiy drifting back to their former pursuits.
