H&ji a French critic: 'I like a cirlbe. fre :-he gets womanish, and a . woman bofore the gets girlish." The energetic man now lies off the veranda and enjoys hU pifw, while hU eyes are fe&iteJ by the beautiful flower of the garden, cart-fully delved by his wife and the servant girl. - "Women vote in "Wyoming, and are well treated by the men, and the married women don't always vote as their husbands do, either. Is noted, further, that the worn n
are sure to vote against candidates of dissipated or immorwl habit. One of the highest and best-deserved comfoments ever paid to our country is emodied in a remark recently made by Jenny Lind. Atter expressing great thankfulness for the enthusiastic reception she had received here, she added: Your Nation takes the rabble ot all other Countries and gives them a chance.'' 3Ii;s Emily Faithful is coming to this country next" fall to lecture on ".Modern .Extravagance:' and every married man who spends $10 a week for billiards, cigars, and other intoxicants, and gives his wife, $G during tho same time for marketing and dress, shcuM induce his better half to attend Miss Faithful's lectures. Norristown Herald. r Judging by the asemblaga at the Teachers' Institute, a very large proportion of the teachers of the public schools of Philadelphia are girls, who are both young and pretty. Sprightly in manner and gay in dress they might be mistaken for the average audience of any of our popular musical matinees, rather than a grave convocation of the pedagogues selected for tho instruction ot the children of a large city. Two gentleman friends happening to meet cne day in the street, and neither having any business on hand, both adjourned to an adjacent club-room. Conversation being rather lagging, one of them endeavored to bring up a talk about women. Said he: 'Now, look there, Jackson I mean at that woman with the pompous hat. "What a fright she is." ''Yes," answered Jack-on, unconcernedly. ''Now," said the first, trying to continue tho conversation, '-there are some women we know, and " ''Yes. and j-ome women wedon t know," responded JackEon, putting in his oar, much to the disgust of his friend. A good way to manage irritable husbands is suggested by the story told of the wife of the great historian and essayist, Thomas Carlyie. Among his other peculiarities he had a great fondness for hot cohVe and a readiness to express his disgust when the cotlvc served at his breakfast was too cold. Or. one occasion, when the first supply was particularly objectionable, . he ordered it to le sent away. A second di-h of coffee arrived, which was almost at boiling-point. Still indignant, he declared that this should be taken away, as it was not hot enough, whereupon his wife mildly observed: "My dear, what would you think of holding a redhot cinder in your motith and drinking your coffee from that?" At this suggestion the irate man of genius collapsed. Woman In Ancieut and Modern Times. (.Professor Darid Swing. Tte as-ertion that man is becoming larger minded and larger hearted finds a significant illustration in the present condition of woman. At no one place can we better see the radical changes for the better in the life of humanity than at the standpoint of the modern woman. "When we look into the face of our mother or wife or daughter or cultivated friends in this half intellectual w orld, we can not but wonder in amazement if these are the l-eings whohnd no souls in some lands, and who were mere slaves in the clas.-ie lands, nd who in all the barbarous tribes have done all the work in field and house, und which all through the middle ages of Christendom were a kind of miserable appendage to tho noble army of men. "Why, even in the Mosaic age? out of which came Christianity, but came like morning out of night, a woman could not bring any kind of lawsuit against a man, and a man might divorce a -wife if he would only take the pains to give her a piece of writing to that effect, ishe must leave the house like a servant girl to whom one may give a certificate, not of good service, but of eerv ice. And you remember that in Solomon's magnificent temple there was an outer court into which the heathen could come, an inner court into which women could come, but into the grand interior, where the wealth and art of the period had done tbeir best work, and where (Jod himself could be found, only the men were to enter. The first definition of man wa so narrow that only the King or royal families were included in it. By degrees it was enlarged until many adult men could enjoy its honors ; but little children and women and slaves were not admitted into its environs. Infants were slain readily. "Wives were whipped, bought and sold, divorced at pleasure, or killed ; in some countries dead slaves were not buried. There were ravines or eir.k-holes into which dead slaves were thrown. You could find the places by watching the carrion birds in their circling flight. Cicero, in the four or five hundred letters he left written to friends, mentions often his father, but never his mother ; he divorced two wives ; loved his daughter, indee J. but was reproved by Iloman statesmen for weeping for her when she died. Nero killed his mother, and Seneca, his moral guide, made no complaint. It thus seem3 to have taken the human raeo a long tinio to expand the word man to such a proportion, that into its. nobleness and security and peace the woman and the little child could take refuge r but at last into this gigantic ark the weakest and hun;blest gather themselves, and are quite safe aa th storms' of life come and the floods climb higher. rieasantrles Concerning Women. A fiend in Kingston, R. I., has been arrested for putting a potato bug in his wife's stocking. His defense is that he heard that its bit- would aua lock-jaw. A St. Loui3 girl recently refused to let an account ot her trousseau be published in the papers. This proves that the trousseau was not equal to that of some rival of hers. A bride of a month went to a married lady of a quarter of a year and sail : "My darling says women are fools." 'Nevermind," said the other, 'he is only studying nouns. "Wait until he reaches adjectives." A man at a friendly gathering boasted that te ha l been married twenty-five yeers, during which time he had never given his wife a cross word or look. 11U wife's version was that he didn't dare to do one or the other. "Father I really must have a new muslin dress for this summer." Husband of professional beauty "Another casualty! More poor widows and orphans!" Well I'm glad my house cleaning is over," said Mrs. Brown with u sigh of thankfulness. "It must bo a relief," observed Mrs. Smith who was calling. '.'But then, how soon you will need to go through it all again." If she hadn't looked around in a sort of critical manner all would have been well. That call will never be returned. New Haven Register. A Professor was recently explaining the well-known physiological theory of the body being entirely renewed in seven years to a class of young ladies in an English school. "Thus, Hiss fc he said, addressing a very pretty young brunette, "in seven years, you see, you'will no longer bo Mi.J S '." "I hope so," replied the unsophisticated maiden, with downcast eyes. "Are you prepared for death ?" the clergyman asked, with a tremor of emotion in his voice as he took the sick woman's hand in his own. A shade of patient thought crossed the invalid's face, and by and by she said, "she didn't hardly believe she wa.-J; there was the little bed room carpet to be taken up yet, and the paint up stairs bad hardly been touched, and she did not want to put up new curtains in the dining room, but she thought if she didn't die until next Monday she would be about as near ready as a woman with a big family and no girl ever expected to be. 1. S. That woman got well CHILI WIT AND WISDOM. "My boy, what does your mother do for a living?" was asked of a ' little bare-footed urchin. "She eats cold victuals, sir." Judging from back appearances. Small boy (rushing in front of young lady wearing rather large poke bonnet, and staring her full in the face) "You've lost your bet, Charlie; I told yer it warn't an old woman." Lodnon Judy. 'Tommy Eeyebright' wants to know if we think "a boy from the city could go into the country and make a living picking strawberries?" A Yell, yes; we rather think the loy could, but the man for whom ho worked couldn't, by a large majority. ''"What is the worst thing abut riches?" asked the Sunday-school Superintendent. And the new boy in the bad class under the gallery who only came in last Sunday, stood up and said, "Their scarcity." And in his confusion the Superintendent told the school to raise and sing "Don't be weary, children." A five year-old daughter of one of our citizens observed to hi in, in tho presence of company, at breakfast: "You mustn't go off without kissing me, papa." "I never forget to do it, do I?-' he asked, surprised. "You may not forget it, but sometimes you go off mad, you know," ehe artlessly replied. The company consulted their cotlee. "I shouldn't think there would be such a word as breakfast," remarked a young linguist to his mother, the other morning. "Why not, dear?" asked she. ''J.ecause, ma," replied the boy, it ain't natural; things never break fast they break loose."' There was a sad bewilderment of expression in the face of that mother as she gazed speechlessly upon her precious son. "Yes," continued the old gentleman, warming with his subject, "it is scandalous, perfectly scandalous. "Why, in New York, if you will believe it, they spend more every year for tobacco than they do for bread V "Is that so?" responded the youngster, letrayed momentarily into something bordering on animation. "Is that so?" ho repeated, removing his cigarette to say it; -'will, 1 suppose it's wuth more." Boston Transcript. Mr. and Mrs. Brown and daughter left New York a few days since for a short sojourn in the country. As most little girls are, Minnie, the daughter, was slightly curious, and she continually annoyed the farmhands with questions rather diflcult to answer. "While out in the pasture, she noticed the men cradling, and, after inquiring into the why and wherefore, without much satisfaction from the rustics, turned and proceeded homeward. She had noticed the night before the operation of milking, and it was a source of continual wonder to her. Toward ausk that evening, she proceeded back of the barn, and again watched the operation. Said she to her Uncle: "Uncle Jim, what are they doing?" "Why, they're gittin' the milk from the cow," responded he. "Does all that milk como from the one cow?" "Yes," answered her Uncle. "Where do they put it in?" continued she, with childish simplicity. And Uncle Jim smiled a smole at the child's curious question. The Czar's Grandson. Mrs Hoot' Letter to Philnlelnliia Telegraph" Sometimes one hears little things about the Czar of Russia which makes one inclined to pardon Nihilism and to comprehend the dynamite plots. The other day I went to visit a very charming old lady, who is an American, and who has lived for many years in Europe. "Whilst turning over the pages of her photograph album, I came across the portrait of a child, a boy of some six or eight years of age, so singularly beautiful that my attention was at once interested The little fjllow was dressed in a Knickerbocker suit black velvet, with his fair hair cut Holbeinwise over his brow, and a lovelier or nobler image of healthful boyhood never gladdened a parent's heart. On my making some exclamation of admiration, my friend produced several other photagraphs of the same child, remarking at the same time that the picture, so far from exaggerating his beauty, hardly did it justice. She then told of her meeting the boy and his mother in Switzerland. Tho child was the son of th lirand. Ditke Alexis of Russia, the mother being his secietly wedded wife. Bv command of the Czar the husband and wife were separated, and the latter was forced, not only to consent to a divorce, but to marry another man. "How could you consent?" asked my friend when the unhappy lady had related her story. The eyes of the speaker filled with tears and her lips quivered. "It was for. my son's sake," she whispered, and then she said no more, being evidently still not wholly freed from the toils ' of the "giant spider of the ISorth, as Whittier once called the; Uzar in one of hia fervent lyrics, of Freedom,
I. 11 Among the delegates to the General Assembly of the Southern Presbyterian Church, now in sessionat Charleston, are two Indians from the Indian Territory, one of them being a clergyman, Rev, Allen "Wright. The Reformed Episcopal Church ha seventeen congregations among the colored people of the South, with a total membership of 1,200. Six missionaries of this denommationare laboring in that field. A sllrer medal of the Pope and tho cross of an Italian Order were parts of the mass of rubbish, consisting also of large stones, nails, coins, pieces ot paper, and bits of cloth, which was found recently in the stomach of an ostrich that died in Rome. The well known voraciousness of an ostrich never got into one stomach a more incongrous assemblage of things than that. At Shrewsbury. England, a fortnight ago, Emma Faucett, the proprietor of a circus, was fined $3 costs for having taken on Sunday ten vans and thirty horses through the town between the hours of 12 and 1. The by laws under which the fine was imposed prohibit the driving of any beast, animal, cattle, poultry wagon or cart, laden or unladen, through the streets on the Lord's Day, and the highest penalty for the offense is $25. An eminent Boston preacher once said that it was mockery to pray at night for sweet and refreshing sleep, without seeing to it that the bed-room is well wentilated. " Hugh Miller Thompson, whom most read ers will well remember as the rector some years ago of an Episcopal Church in New York lives now in New Orleans. He has recently been holding a controversy in a newspaper with the pa-tor of a Unitarian Church, and in one of his letters made the assertion that one-half of the congregation of Rev. Phillips Brooks' Church in Boston were formerly Unitarians. "I know," he said, ''from the best evidence, that the cultured Unitarianism f New England is largely drifting into the Episcopal Church." At the annual Gregorian festival held re cently in Londou, it being the eighth, tho congregation was very large, filling the great Cathedral of ot. l aul s in every part. Ihe portion beneath the dome wa3 so crowded that ladies were unable to remain, owing to the heat. The choir numbered upward of 1,1:40, and of clergymen present there were 1G0. To show the imposing picture they pre sented, it is said that the front rank of the boys, all of whom marched four abreast, made the full circuit of the cathedral before tho Bishop, who came last, was seen. The lady to whom young Pecci, the Pope's nephew, was recently married, is the daughter of n rich Roman merchant. Being unable to obtain from his father the means necessary to set up an establishment befitting such a bride, the 3'oung man applied to his I ncle. AH that the rope could do for him was to give him 23,000 francs, and this sum he was obliged to borrow. Much talk was made in Rome of the meagerness of this pro vision, and when Leo heard the current gos sip on the subject, he replied that he was truly sorry he could do no more, but matters with him were in position such that he never had enough in the house for the needs of the day.
