FKMAL.K PHILOSOPHY.
Cold Comfort for a Couple of Ardent Lovers. "Why will young men hover around the light that dezz'es and disappoints? Why will they talk over and over again the "sou nonsense" which their tires and pracdsires did before them to generations of lair ladies less schooled in the cold philosophy of modern society. Occasionally their rsshneBs brings its reward. Sometime ago a handsome, dashing, gallant youth a favorite with the sex left Chicago for lialtimore, where be met a friend in high eccial standing, who very soon, made him acquainted with some cf.the most beautiful women cf that beauty-producing town. Baltimore is famous for its women and l's oys'ers. The latter are sometimes oat of season, bat the former never. Consequently there is always some attraction in the queen of the Chesepease. Everybody gives the palm to Balti more'B belles that is, everybody who has got a sweetheart somewhere else. Oar friend from Chicago attended a wed ding recently in the Monumental City, and there met a bewitching maiden, rare and radiant as Eve ere 'Adam claimed her. Tne usual commonplaces led to a conversation that became somewhat significant. Wha: with her pearly teeth, luminous eyes, graceful form and luxuriant hair, not to speak of the winning tone of her voice, the Chicago youth became quickly fascinated, and was impudent enocn to express himself upon the subject of danger to bachelor peace in a city that boasted so many lovely daughters Of course wnen this kind of laoguae it addresfed to a woman it is but natural to expact that she will appropriate the spirit of it io herself. The damsel listened quietly and at the end of the dissertation said she knew the Colonel's friend and himseif were equally atllicted with the tender passion and that in the morning she would send the former a recipe that would cure the disease. No more was thought about the matter until the subjoined communication In the young lady's hand writing, but not signed, arrived at the hotel where the friends were stopping: An infallible remedy for the passion, love. First, yon must open the brain of consideration and let out the blood of immoderate affection. Then administer the following prescription, viz. : Take of the blossoms ot pound judgment, one handful; of patience, five handfuls; one handful of the root of understanding; twelve ounces of resolution, prudence and discretion; rive ounces of dislike and resentment. Let them simmer together in the brain eight and forty hours; then strain from it the dregs of melancholy into one spoonful of iorgetfulness: sweeten a dose of the former with the sugar of contentment Into the heart, aod stop it with the cork of indifference. The ingredients are tobe found at the House of Resolution, next door to Reason, in Contentment, the town of Fortitude, or at any office in CourtBhiD street, Marriagetown. The effect of this document on the lovers was not soul-inspiring. They say that such philosophy mignt answer for a convent or a monastery, but has no place in the loving, earnest world in which they belong. Tald III His Own Measure. Righteous punishment comes sooner or later to peaterers aud practical jokers. They should expect it at any time. Says a contemporary. Years ago, in Penobscott, Me., there lived a man by the name of H , whose greatest pleasure was io tormenting others. Iiis own family were generally the butts of his sport. Ooe cold and blustering night, he retired to bed at an early hour, his wife being absent at a neighbor's. Some time after, she, on returning, finding the door closed, demanded admittance. "Who are you?" cried Mr. H . "Yon know who I a ox! Let me in its very cold." 'ßegon, you strolling vagabond! I want nothing of you here!" "But I must come in!" "What is y oar name?" 'You know my name it is Mrs. H !" "Btgine! Mrs. H is a very likely woman. She never keeps such late hours as thic!" "If you dan't let me in," replied Mrs. H , 'I will drown myself in the well!" "Do, if you please," he replied. She then took a log and plunged it into the well and returned to the tide of the door. Mr. II , hearing the noise, rushed from the bouse to save, as be supposed, his drown ing wile. Sae, at the Fame time, slipped in and closed the door after her. Mr. H , almost nude, in turn demanded admittance. "Who are you?" she demanded "You know who I am ; let me in or I shall freeze!" "Begone, you great rogue, I want nothing of you here!" "Bat I mast come in ." What is yoar name?" 'r "You know my name; It is Mr. H "Mr. H it a very likely man. He don't keep such late hours." Suffice to say, she, after keeping him in the cold until she was satisfied, opened tbs door and let him in." - ''.- - ... i
INCIDENTS OPTHE'tBSSl.
"What the Supervisors Report of the First Day 120,000 Names Taken A Young Woman's Small Victory. New York World, June 3. Supervisor of the Census Adams, at his ofiice at No. 59 Liberty street, yesterday received postal cards from all but about half a dczen of the CS1 census enumerators of the city, informing him how they .bad got on with their first day's work in this city. Thete postal cards are pecially provided for the purpose, and at the close of each day's work each enumerator informs both the Superintendent of the Census at Washington and Supervisor Adams how many houis he spent at the work and how many namrs he collected with remark, in Mr, Adsms' Cise, if there ba any to make. Thote returns for Tueeday show that about 120,000 names were taken In this city, aod as the canvassers get two cents a name a total ex pec 89 of $2 400 was incurred by the Government. The experiences of the enumerators was as var'ous as pcs ible. They eccountered very little determined oppcsi tion and point-biank refusal to afford information, but in many cases detected an inclination to extract amusement from Uncle Sam's great Etatistical effort by badgering hi enumerator. Women generally imparted the information, and while thsy were ais general rule careless in their recital of the facts called for by the echednle, they were overwhelmingly profuse in ''points" for which the United S ates had iorgolten to provide blanke. The ten women enumer tor j having pests along Fifth avenue bad not the eaeust task after ail. Tne conventional "XV; at home" was sent don to them egaln and again, end 'when at last the miiTEES of the toa.e a; disote:ed the cbancts were that the referred the enumerator to the head of the household it his bnsiners place down town. H-ein a man or woman with what is apparently a book agent's portfolio undor his arm, the wise servant often adopts ths F&bian tactics of unhooking the bell wire and letting him or her ring till he or she 0?s away faint and weary. There is one ctsd of aa old man who had gone Into the task with enthusiasm, but whom one day's experience convinced that the work was beyond his powers of patience and who resigned. A yonnger man was appointed. Oae man laid up with rheumatism, another with pneumonia, and a third with a broken leg, have been excused. No case of improper conduct by a canvasser has been reported. As near as Mr. Adama could - judge from the cases reported, there were not more than a doz?a where it will be necessary to employ the arm of th-i law tocompelecme reluctant or sulky person to give information. One enua eratoe came down to the office to a&k whether a 'longshoreman was a laborer or not. tie had put the 'longshoreman down as such, aod was threatened with a mobbing by an Indignant practicer of the art, whoin-isted that stowing a snip's cargo is skilled labor. The main'trouble encountered ia in getting people to understand precisely that the work is that of taking the census, and that the information received Is not to be used in any way to harass those who give it. In one or two caioi the cinvasssrs write to Mr. Adf.ius to cay that people are afraid tb information would find its way into the newspapers. The proprietor of a Sixth avenue ealoon told the canvasser to go to a te'ghbonng region and enforced the order by going to loosen a dan gerous dog The police will attend to his case, no doubt. In lare tenements the en tire house forms itself into a committee of the whole and assists the enumerator more or less. In East Fourteenth eti est one canvasser found almost every door of a large tenement locked, and begin nearly all of his inquiries by way of the" keyholes. "What Is your age?" is the lecond question on the list. It should be put last, and then the enumerator would have a better aversge chance. One bnxom woman gave her age as thirty-three, and later on remarked that her eldest son was twenty-four. When tbis presumable discrepancy was pointed out to her she refused to alter her statistics in any particular. One canvasser got to a house jast as the household goods were starting away on a cart from the door, and a family moving in came along at the same moment. He wants to know which is his family. In the Twenty-first Assembly District a gradut of the Normal College was appointed a cat vaster and a politician had the adjoining election District. His recommendation certified that be had "run" the District and knew it if anybody did. The two found themselves on Tuesday morning on the same etoop, bent on the same errand. After each had demonstrated to the other that the other was wrong they came amicably down to Supervisor Adams, and it turned oat that the young woman was right. The enumerators in Macaerelville and among the shanty population of the west side had hard lines it was neces.ary to try every structure for inhabitants, for the architectural canon that an edifice should indicate its purpose by its exterior does cot hold here. A lumber yard and even a park bench are re . garded as homes by the enumerator. Two cases were reported where wives did not know the business of their husbands, and many cases where they didn't know their husbands' sgts. A family at No. 101 West Forty-eighth street was especially com plained ot as refasing names or admittance. In many cases ot eicknrss in a family tbe canvasser was invited to call again, which be tried by persuasion ta avoid, seeking to get the information at his first visit. In all cases to-day where can vast ers are found to have sent no card of progress at all it will be inferred that they are not at work, and a messenger will be sent to them. With fair weather and at the rate of progress made, it la more than likely that the entire canvass will be over well within the time allotted to it. The recent heat, which has sent many people off to the country, has upeet the prugreai of the work somewhat, bat the psreentage is very small. From all the information-he had received from the can vassers, Supsrvisor Adams says that he finds the trouble to come from two- classes the richest and the poorest. THK HERO OF GETTYSBURG. General Sherman's Tribute to General Meade. Philadelphia Press. George G. Meade Post No. 1, G. A. K.. had made elaborate preparations to decorate the grave of General Meade in Liurel Hill Cemetery. Eirly in the afternoon the rott arrived at the grave.accompanied by General Sherman, Colonel Poe and other prominent officers. General Snerman entered tbe enclosure, and placed a beautiful wreath of flowers on the grave of the departed General. In a few moments the grave was covered with the most beautiful and expensive floral designs. After the band had played a dirge and the choristers sang an anthem. Comrade W. J. Simpson delivered an addrets. General Sherman was then introduced, and spoke as follows: I fear somewhat that the announcement that 1 was to make an address here to-day may tend to some disappointment. I am not going to make an address nor anything that could be called an address. We came here to-day to do a holy tsek, and I feel more like giving myself up to thought as I stand here beside the grave of our old friend Meade. It is seven years since we buried him herein this beautiful spot, overlooking the hills and valleys where he loved to roam, and where be and I have roamed together., He could not have chosen a spot for his burial more in keeping with bis character than this. We can add nothing to his fame. His same stands in history among the great soldiers of the world. Great soldiers are men of great hearts, and none more so that George Gordon Meade. We who knew him knew that be was resdy to sacrifice everything for the welfare of his ountry. He was a man of the kindliest feeling and the simplicity of a child, but when war came he arote to tbe occasion, and when given the command of a great army
atGettyabarg', tut rose to it like a lull man, and became one of the greatest of men. Well do we come here to-day not to - dedicate his Ufa anew, for tbat Is passed, but to dedicate our own liven anew to the great principles which he exemplified. We who are eld will pass away, and to you who are young will pass th undivided heritage. Keep it alive and pure, and for that purpese etnu'a'e the example of the patriot, gentleman, soldier and fnend, on wnose grave we are here to strew flowers.
