lcion inriduan. CONCERNING WOMEN. No wife ought to desire a better inscription on her tombstone than this: Her manners mild, her temper nich. Her language good, and not too much. Among the women who voted at a recent school election in Concord, X. II., was Mrs. Isaac Hill, 91 ycnrclJ, and the widow of a Vermont governor, and Mrs. Uarnise Jone?, I'.j years old. At the Xew York Medical College and Hospital for "Women on Thursday eveningsix young ladies were graduated, two of whom are natives of Smyrna an two natives of Brazil. One of the latter is cnly 1; yearä of age. "We should like to have a rnalo physician who graduated at that age present himself. Woman. We look to the trees for strength, hut turn to the drooping flowers for grace and beauty. .Some inspired authority on the subject of woman, says: Place her among the flowers, foster her tu a plant, and she is a thing of fancy and waywardness annoyed by a dewdrop fretted by the touch of a butterfly's wing, ready to faint at the sound of a beetle or the rattling of a window pane at night, and overpowered by the perfume of the rosebud. But let real calamity come; rouse her affections; enkindle the iires of her heart, and mark her then! How strong is her heart. Place her in the heat of battle; give her a child, a bird, or anything to protect, and see her, in a relative instance, lilting her white arms as a shield, as her own blood crimsons her upturned forehead, praying for her life to protect the helpless. Transplant her in the dark places of the earth; call forth her energies to action, and her breath becomes a healing; her presence a blessing, he disputes inch by inch the strides of a striking pestilence, where man, the strong and brave, pale and affrighted, shrinks away. Misfortune haunts her not. She wears away a life of silent endurance, and i;oes forward with less timidity than to her bridal. In prosperity she is a bud full of odors, waiting but for the winds of adversity to ecatter them abroad, pure gold, but untried in the furnace. In fchort, woman is a miracle, a mystery, the center from which radiates the charm of existence. Pleasantries Concerning the Fair Sex. A Boston paper thinks there ought to be a law in this country to compel eery girl who is engaged to wear a rod bow at her throat. That would't do a bit of good. Every girl would wear one. It is noticeable how very quie.t and domure she looks on Monday morning, a? if utterly obivous of the smacking good time the enjoyed on the previous evening, when Albert was there and the light went out. Easter evening chat: "Did you seo Miss Fitzjoy's hat? Was it not charmingl" "Yes, a pretty hat; but the same feather she has worn for three seasons, and the flowers that she wore season before last." Ominous and dreadful silence. It is a fringular fact that a girl who when she is alone can put her hand on the top rail of a fence and skip over like a lamb at play, will, if her beau is along, give him as much trouble helping her over as though she was a rheumatic locomotive. "There's something about your daughter," Mr. AVaughop said reflectively, "there's something about your daughter" Yes,'' said old Mr. Thistlepod, there is; I have noticed it myself. It comes every evening about 8 o'clock and it doesn't get away until 2. And some of these nigliU I am going to lift it all the way from the front parlor to tha side gate, and see what there is in it." Trench Thought Concerning Women and the World Generally. Translated and Adapted from the Pari Journal. Alfred de Vigny: A woman is always a child. Cardan: "Wine and women are the teachers of all the sin?, if they arc not the authors. An opinion of Mr. Labouehere's: "It is the ambition of every bride to have a pretty wedding.' E. Young: Pretentions to youth always give to a woman a few more years than she really has. Seneque: In love the accomplishment of our greatest desire is often the source of our greatest troubles. Louis Desnoyers: "We blame inconstancy in women, but only when we are the victim. "We find it charming if we are the object. The Persian says that as the tendency

,J now is, the ladies will soon wear dresses so

tight fitting that they will have to soak them in warm water in order to get them off. "As for me," cried M. Chesnelong in the Chamber of Deputies during the debate on article seventh, 1 lay my hand on my conscience as a Christian, a Frenchman, a father of a family, and I push away that law, every bit of it." M. Eeville in his inaugural address before the College of France, said: "There are those who call the Eternal by the name of (Jod.' I call him 'Pure Truth. I am a theist with infinitely little metaphysics; a Christian, if you please, but without a dogma and without a creed. I believe only in facts." "What I say fa that religion must be respected," exclaimed M. Pelletan in the Chamber of Deputies, "that the priest must b respected Dut on one condition, namely, that Le remains in the temple. There he is inviolable. But if the priest descends into the public arena, if he engages in political strifes, if he attempts tocreate a state against a state, then it is not a right that he is exercising but a usurpation that he is committing." LITTLE FOLKS. Sunday school teacher "Annie, what mut one do to be forgiven?"' Annie "lie must sin. "Mamma," aste 1 a little girl, "why is it they sing in durch, 'We'll dine no more,' , and then go right home and dine7" A pretty anecdote is told of a little girl to whom the unseen world is very real. "Where does (iod live, mamma?" she asked one evening after saying her prayers. "He lives in Heaven, my dear, in the celestial

city, whose streets are paved with gold." "Oh, yes, I know that, mamma," she said with groat solemnity "but what's his number?" What is wisdom?" asked a teacher, of a class of small girls. A bright-eyed little creature arose and answered: "Information of the brain." . . A little girl in one of our public schools the other day had occasion to parse the word "angel." Coming to the gender she stopped dismayed, and asked her teacher if there are any "men angels." . "Mamma," said little Henry, putting his arm around his mother's neck, and laying his cheek against hers, "will God wipe the tears away from my eyes if I can't find you when I get into the new Jerusalem?" "Pa, will you get me a pair of skates if I prove that a dog has 10 tails?" "Yes, my son." "Well, one dog has one more tail than no dog, hasn't he?" "Yes." "Well no dog has nine tails; and if one dog has one more tail than no dog, then one dog must have 10 tails. Hand over the skates, please." A little fellow returned home from the Sunday-school infant cla?. His eyes glistened brightly as ho showed a pretty card on which was the phrase, "pray without ceasing," which was given to him by his teacher. The mother read it, and the little fellow seemed to assume a thoughtful mood, and then said: "'Doss I won't dive it to the minister, tause he pays long enough already." A Dotroiter has a bright, blue-eyed little niece of four years. The other day he paid her a visit, and she, as usual, welcomed him with a fond embrace, coupled with a smack which echoed through the room. lie presented her with the accustomary box of sweet, with the question, "Do you love me, Jittl? qvaV "Xc, uatle, I dyes always, sure!" sL repllr-u. After she Lad disposed of her candy, she climbed upon her vit-itor's knee, and fondling him for a tinv., she surprised him with the question, "Docs you love mo too?" "To bo sure I do," was the reply. The little one paused a moment and then whispered in his ear, "Well, if you like me, too, then give me all your money." EXPRESSIONS.

A marriage for love is a strong argument for Darwin, because it is always the result of natural selection. A marriage for money is not far behind, because it shows that man is next to a brute. Parasols will be much larger this season than last year, says an exchange, and we're right glad of it. A fellow can have lots of fun with a big parasol with a pretty-girl attachment in summer time. "When we see a clergyman kissing the male members of his flock as well as the female, the tobacco-chewing, pipe-smoking, beer-drinking old sinners, as well as the young and pretty ones, we begin to believe that his heart is in his work. "We can never have very much confidence in the uprightness of others until we have discovered some degree of uprightness in ourselves. We are apt to suspect everybody if we ourselves ought to be suspected, and just as apt to tru-t others only when we ourselves can be trusted. "Has your husband shown any encouraging signs of growth in the fear of the Lord'.'" asked a clergyman of a Xew England woman as they shared a social cup of tea. "Well," said the woman, "I kinder think he has, for 1 have lately noticed that he never goes out on the Lord's day without a shotSun." Skinny Men and women are not admired.
