There can be no better way to improve tbe stock of cows than to use a good bull and keep tbe beat calves well feeding and carirg for them until matured. Alter these become cows a selection can again be made for breeding, and only the bt retained. In a few year the value of dairy cows may be doubled by this careful practice of selection. Gr!s. Do not buy of tree peddlers, unless absolutely known to represent a reputable nursery. Most of them e frauds, and their statement of tbe value new and high sounding varieties are fiction. Wheat steeped in boiling water, and given hot, and hot baked potatoes crushed with a masher, are as good food as can be eiven; water slightly warmed with a small quantity of sulphate ot iron (copperas) in if, will be useful. Allspice mixed with cornmeal mush is an excellent condiment, and by no means costly. Laudanum in 10 drop doses has been found a remedy for the cholera, or poultry intestinal fever, which has destroyed so many Hacks. Gekf. and Dick. In the evening games of winter gatherings of young people, and older odcs, too, it cf t n becomes necessary to punish some one, or more, of the company by imposing a "for feit." The penance should be something that either is not easy to follow oat to the letter that is, has some catch in it, or puts the person in a conspicuous and amusing light. In all cases a forfeit shonld be designed to amuse the company as a whole, and never to offend the person called upon to pay it. In order to illustrate our idea of a good forfeit, and also to furnish suggestions to those who enjoy and take part i n such plea-ant amusements, we give a few ot tbe forfeits that may be im nosed: First, put a newspaper upon the lloor in such a way that two persons can stand on it and not be able to touch each other with their hands.
