How the Republican Convention of 1X7? Was Mioa;il at Cincinnati. Chicago Journal It has been alleged in dispatches to various newspapers, and charged editorially by the Inter-OoeaD, that the local committee in charge of the arrangements for the Cincinnati convention in ls7H waa hos.iie to Mr. Blaine and Senators Morton and Conkliog, and favorable to tb nomination of General I'.rlstow. This is a mistake. There was a gen tleman in th city yesterday who had a thorough knowledge ot the facts connected with the management of that convention, and as much to do with the results of the convection as almost anyone who can be mentioned, lie submitted to an interview for the Journal, and we rive the substance of his statements, that the truth of history may be vindicated. There waa on the Cincinnati local committee an active liristow man, but the majority of the committee were in the interest of Mr. Ulaine. The most active of these tb.9 real managers were W. B. S battue, S. F. Covington and Hon. BeD jimin Kggleaton. The latter bad as assistant Colonel A. C. Bands, the most adroit of the politicians of aio. I nder his control were the "boy" of the wtrds and precincts, and they found their way to the galleries and shou ed thems'lves hoarse for Jlame. At first tb at is to say, from Saturday t Tuetday morningthe real choice of Kgleston and Sands was Morton. but reing the tide for Blaine they mtde terms with the friends of the Maine eLlef. When "the adjournment was had Wednesday afternoon, there waa a consultation between the Blaise membtrsand the lccsl committee, and Mefsrs. Shattuc, Cov irgton aud Fggleston distributed tickets where it was confidently exprf ted the most good would be done for their candidate. The lirt named of this committee was so intent ou this work that be refund tickets to representatives of the press, when tuch licke's were absolutely recessary to the making cf proper reports of the convention. This course brought dew a upon his head a eharp rebuke from the pen of Hon. Frederick Hassaunk, of the Cincinnati Volksblatt, who was one of tue gentlemen of the press who fcuffsrtd from the management. But ttuse gentlemen were handsomely beaten at their own gnie 1 1 chanced t bat as loe Elaine ccniuiitteiuen were getting and bearing away their tickets a newspaper man was near by ana witnessed it all. He straightway went to the headquarters of the Indiana and Ohio delegations and roiitad Coionel Ho loway and Cieneral Xoyes of what wtes transpiring Next he went to the t-'dzette and Commercial idbces', the real Brielow headquarter?, and advised Richard Htutih and Marat Haisiead of what tLty might expect the next dy. The eventful day showed how this 8cteaie worker. la the gillery, zu the left tend of the btage. was a small, compact bedy of enthudastic Indianiarjs, who did thtir bett for the noble Morton. In tbe gallery on the right hanC. ttretchirjg far do a the ball were tLe Uliitie boys, and on these Mr. Kggleston, who w;.s prominent ou the sts, had his eyes. At the critical moment a wave of the hacd gavr the iignal, when up leaped the B sine fel lows on their tetu and fairly fplit their throats for thtir fdv&iite. At Dras, which has an elevat on of 10,OW feet. Mr. LydekUer ebii mated the snow fall, from the native accoulIs as havirg been from 00 to -1 ) feet tLijk. The ellecnofthis enormous enow fall were to be sen throughout the country. At Dras, the well built travelers' bungalow, which has stood some 30years, was ent rely crushed down by the weight of snow which fell upon it. In almost every viiIKtf lha neighbariDg mountains rnire or lees of the log houses bad fallen, while at Gultuar and Konomarg, where a't-mpt was made to remove the snow, almost all the hüls of the Kuropfan visitors were ctteily broktD down by it. In the higher uionn ttiDB whole hidsides have been denuded of vegetation and foil by the enormous avalanches which swept down toem, leaving vast gaps in the primeval forests, and clcs.ngthe valleys below with the debris of rocks and trees. As an instance of the amount of so w wbicii must Lave fallen in b higher levels, Mr. Lyde&ker mentions the Z)gt pass, lead! Dg from Oas lira re to Dras, wnich has an elevation of 11,30. fet. He crossed this eariy in Augutt liit year, and then found that the whole of the ravioe leading up to the pas from the Caabmere side was still filled with snow, which he istlmated in places to be at least 1Ö0 feet thick. In ordinary seasons this road in the Z)gi pass is clear from snow some time durin i the month of June. As another instance of the grat snowfall, Mr. Lydekker tako the valley leading from the town of Dras np to the paoa separating that place from the valley of the Kithngunga river. About the middle of August almost tLe whole of trt tirjjt mentioned valley, at an elevation of 12.0UÜ feet, was completely choked with 6now, which in places was at least 200 feet rtxep. In the same district all patscs over 13,000 ftetwere still d ep in suow at the the same season of the 3 ear Mr. Lydtkker gives other instances of taoir lying in placrs in September, where no mow had ever befoie been obierved after Jane. As to the destruction of animal life ia the upper Wardwan valley, large d umbers of Ibex were seen imbedded in snow; ia one place upward of CO heads were counted, and in another not less than 100 The most convincing proofs, however, of the havoc caused among the wild animals by the great snowfall is the fact that scarcely any ibex were seen during; : 1 tat summer in those portions of the Wardwan and Ttlall valleys which are ordinarily considered as ture finds. So, also; the red bear and the marmot were far less numerous than usual."" Mr. I.ydekker estimateathat the de-
traction to animal life cus d by enow has tu exceeded any slaughter which co aid be inflicted by sportsmen during a periol of at least five or six years. Silly.
